OVERVIEW

A versatile and portable head packed with classic tone.

The Marshall DSL15H 15W guitar amp head is a no-nonsense, mini-brute. It is identical to the DSL15C except it doesn't feature reverb. It is compact, making it easy easy for the musician on the go.

It's an all-tube, 15W head that delivers great tone in a compact "small box" design. Powered by two 6V6 power tubes, with four 12AX7s in the preamp, the DSL15H might be small, but its guts are as serious as its big brother, the DSL100H.

With footswitchable classic/ultra gain channels (footswitch supplied), deep switch to boost lower-end chunk, and on the back panel a pentode/triode switch for maximum flexibility (15W to 7.5W), the DSL15H perfectly combines performance, versatility and value for money.

FEATURES
  • Power: 15W (tube)
  • Tubes: four 12AX7 (preamp); two 6V6 (power amp)
  • Half-power switch to 7.5W
  • Two footswitchable channels
  • Controls: Volume, gain (independent per channel); presence, bass, middle, treble, deep, toneshift (universal)
  • Dimensions: 19.6" x 9.5" x 9.2"
  • Weight: 22.5 lb.
  • Footswitch included

For the money this little head will deliver big and I mean BIG Marshall tones. I have had mine for less than a week and I have already changed out the power tubes with JJs and the preamp tubes with some old Mullards, GREAT SOUND! With my Les Paul Traditional I can achieve everything from ZZ Top to ACDC in hard rock easily without pedals. Turn down the guitars volumne knob and playing Southern Rock like "38 Special" is a breeze. I'm using a Celestion 12M "greenback" speaker and I couldn't be much happier.

I wanted to like this amp but sadly the first one was defective and so was the replacement. Within 2 minutes of playing the first one, the gain channel went completely out. The replacement came with the deep switch or the presence control not working.

Musician's Friend took them both back prepaid shipping which is great. Maybe Marshall will get the QC process under a little tighter control and I'll give it another shot down the line but for now, two in a row is too many.

Comments about Marshall DSL15H 15W All-Tube Guitar Amp Head:

Thought I'd give the amp a few months before reviewing. I'm running into a Hughes and Kettner 16ohm 1x12 closed back with a Vintage 30. I'm a metal guy I and I was looking for a nice high gain amp. This is the one I landed on.
The cleans sound really good. No complaints there.
Sadly the dirty channel gets fuzzy as the gain is cranked past noon. Again, I'm a metal guy so I like lots of gain but the tone needs to be good. Sadly it just isn't that good.
The power tubes burned out a few weeks after buying it new. That was a bit of a bummer but I guess that kind of thing happens.
In the end, I'll call it an ugly girlfriend - Good enough until something better comes along.

Comments about Marshall DSL15H 15W All-Tube Guitar Amp Head:

My wife surprised me with this little amp yesterday, and I can hardly stop playing it! Don't let the 15 watt rating fool you; this amp packs a huge punch with classic Marshall tone. I do wish it had a reverb, but I've got pedals for that. For this price, you can't go wrong. I am running it through a Marshall 4x12 cabinet, which is a natural match and really delivers.

Comments about Marshall DSL15H 15W All-Tube Guitar Amp Head:

I like this amp over many others I have tried -- including the Fender Blues JR III and Vox Night Train. The DSL15H has a nice punchy sound and with a 2 x 12 cabinet it sounds full. As compared to a Marshall Class 5 head it sounds flatter and less "tube-like" -- I guess its a more modern sounding amp. I really don't like the overdrive channel. It just sounds crummy but it might sound better when the amp is pushed to its maximum volume as is the case with most Marshall amps. I just haven't tried that yet.

Comments about Marshall DSL15H 15W All-Tube Guitar Amp Head:

The DSL15H delivers great sounds in a small package. I'm using it to drive a Jet City JCA12S 1x12 cabinet (solid) upgraded with an Eminence Man'O'War (brawny). The Classic Gain (clean) channel is rich and musical, and the Ultra Gain (overdrive) channel is big and edgy, even with just 15 watts. I'm OK with the wide difference in gain between the two channels: I'll use an OD pedal with the Classic channel to get a third sound, and roll off the volume on my guitar to take some edge off of the Ultra channel. If it had 40 watts and an effects loop -- is a DSL40H head coming any time soon? -- it would be even better.

Comments about Marshall DSL15H 15W All-Tube Guitar Amp Head:

Running it into a 4x12 it is plenty loud for small venues. I feel that the "Ultra Gain" channel has a bit too much gain, the gain knob for that channel doesn't go "low enough." Perhaps a mod is in order. The Clean channel is excellent.

Comments about Marshall DSL15H 15W All-Tube Guitar Amp Head:

I was looking for the Marshall sound in a small, low watt head. This is it! I was skeptical, but read the reviews and crossed my fingers. I am running this head on the 7.5W setting through a JCM800 combo amp (just the speakers) and a Line 6 XT Pro pedal modeler. There are no sounds I cannot recreate, and best of all you get lots of Marshall sound without having to shake the neighbors. Overall, very impressed after 2 weeks.

This is the amp head you need if you want that Marshall tone but don't want to spend alot of money. It is awesome in every way. There is a reason why Jimi Hendrix used Marshall amps. You just can't go wrong with this amp.

What is not to love in this small 15 watt 2 channel tube head. It rocks and leaves you with a smile on your face the louder you crank it. It has a beautiful plexi tone on the clean channel and a hot rodded JCM800 tone on the ultra channel. Plenty of gain on tap in the ultra channel. I wish an effects loop was included but it sounds so good that I can forgive this!
