OVERVIEW

Better control over the speed of the effect you have locked in.

The MXR Variphase is a killer twist on the classic Phase 90, providing more control over the sound and feel of the iconic effect than ever before. Built into a Cry Baby housing, the Variphase allows you to control the speed of the effect with your foot so you can ramp up and ramp down the effect as needed within and between songs. Set the speed to a slow, dramatic swoosh for strummed passages and then kick up the shimmery velocity for a ripping solo.

Open up the Variphase’s tonal spectrum with the Mix control, which enables you to set the ratio of wet to dry signals. Bring the phase effect up front and center with the Volume control. Finally, on the inside of the pedal, there’s a switch to toggle between aggressive Block phasing and the subtler Script sound.

The Variphase has been updated with a standard toe-down on/off switch.

English is my second language so I'll try my best to explain myself.

I bought the Variphase CSP001X out of curiosity, it's a little hard to find reviews about this particular pedal, most reviews I found are about the older model, the one with the spring that takes back the pedal all the time.

I've used a MXR Phase 90 in my pedal board for a year or so. I love the sound of this pedal but it increases the volume a lot every time it's on, so I decided to buy the Variphase and see how good it is.

First, it's eye catchy, bright orange, solid *same housing as any Dunlop Cry Baby, great sound, very clean by pass and the pedal control works excellent.

The only cons I found are that just as loud as the Phase 90 and the lower speed setting position of the pedal is like the 10 o'clock of the Phase 90.

However, this pedal comes with several interesting features. First there's no spring, it has a on/off switch as a Cry Baby. It comes with a volume control and a mix control that allows you to control the amount of effect that you want in your signal and the volume of the mix, it is loud even at a very low level. Inside the battery compartment there's very little switch witch allows you to select either *Shallow or *Deep. Shallow is pretty much the same as the Phase 90 and Deep is the Phase 45. Both options offer great sound quality. There's another control inside the battery compartment, a small knob that works similar to the rate control of a Chorus pedal, detuning the wet signal a little bit to make the effect more tridimensional.

It's a great effect, not very easy to control but totally worthy. MXR should include a user's manual inside the box, or at least have one online.

These Cry Baby housings are tough as nails. Seems like Dunlop made a heroic effort to change things, based on what people criticized in the original version. I think the disdain for the spring-loaded treadle was a bit premature. Now there is a toe switch, so you have to push the effect into a rapid whirl when it comes on, then consciously back off, unless you engage it before the song starts. True, you can now leave it where you choose, which is great, but if you do rock it back and forth, you're still using your foot the whole time. I think the volume still doesn't go down quite far enough, and I never tried the original version, so I don't know if that has improved or not. I have it set on the "deep" setting, whichever one that is, but I'm already thinking the "shallow" setting might be better for me. I think the Mix knob on the side is a great feature. Maybe deep with less mix would be nice and subtle. I have a Phase 99, and this is different and useful enough to be on the board with it. So, a mixed bag. I think Dunlop is out of hot water, at least, and I appreciate getting a killer deal on it.

Comments about MXR CSP-001X Variphase Pedal:

I bought this thinking "Cool! A Phase-Wah pedal! How awesome is that!!" I was mixed up. It doesnt work like a wah, more like a leslie pedal that happens to be a phaser. The treadle works the number of the oscillations per second, not the oscillation itself. I was hoping for a more wah-like control of the phase sweep, not for control of the rotary effect speed. What's the point of that? A tap tempo for on a Phase 90 would've made more sense than this for a guitar pedal. This would probably sound cool on a keyboard though.

Comments about MXR CSP-001X Variphase Pedal:

I will start by saying that this pedal is not for everyone. But I like the volume and the mix controls; they help dial in the response. And the slide switch on the inside of the unit (can be accessed through the battery door) is a great touch, giving you shallow (script phaser) or deep (block phaser). I assumed that I would just leave it on deep, the "block" sound, but I've found that I really like the "shallow" script sound. That's probably how I will be using it.
I got this on the SDOTD so it's well worth it for me. I get a choice between two phaser sounds, a wet/dry signal mix, and volume, with the pedal operating the speed function.
If interested, just make sure you get the model number with the "X" at the end; it's the newer version with the on/off switch like a Cry Baby.

Comments about MXR CSP-001X Variphase Pedal:

I love Dunlop/MXR effects so much that I own like 9 of them, and this is a versatile addition to the fleet that replaces a rock-solid Phase 100 on my pedal board. You get 2 flavors of phasing - deep (MXR block type) and shallow (MXR script type); both are very musical. You can switch between the two using a switch hidden in the battery compartment, plus you can adjust the volume and mix (something you can't do with a Phase 90 or Phase 100) using little knobs on the side. And of course, you can control the speed to taste using the pedal itself.

Some reviewers complained that this is 'too much like a Leslie;' well then try thinking outside the box and quit being so limited, then! Would you even know what to do with a Leslie? Probably not. Ratcheting up the speed with the pedal makes for really interesting phase artifacts, and the sounds you can get are only limited by your imagination and playing ability. This is a really cool take on classic phase sounds that gives you a wee bit more control in live/improv situations. Don't pay attention to the haters and give it a try while they are still making these!

Comments about MXR CSP-001X Variphase Pedal:

This is almost a great pedal. It sounds great and the sweep/feel are excellent. Overall I'm happy to finally have a treadle operated phase.
But.... Why, oh why, oh why doesn't it have an LED???
Also, it turns on/off the same way as a crybaby. This coupled with the fact that the fastest speed is at the toe down position means that I find it hard to be musical turning it on or off with the high speed "warbley" sound as the first or last thing you hear. An easy fix would be to have the slowest speed at the toe down position and the fastest speed at the heal down position. Or, better yet, move the on/off to another place more like the Fulltone deja'vibe MDV-3 (which I also own)
I'm make the mods myself when the warranty period is over. I'd love to have a treadle operated flanger next!

I plugged this in once, then did not use it- put it in the box new. The next time it was plugged in, it did not work. Dunlop has stated a number of defective units were shipped, and it appears that they went on the SDOTD?? I will be in touch about this, MF.

Comments about MXR CSP-001X Variphase Pedal:

Many years ago, I used the Maestro Phaser which was kind of a small console with 3 rocker switches for slow, medium and fast phase settings. It was not sturdy enough for foot control and was better sitting on top of an amp but then had to be done by hand. I miss that sound, though, and this wah style pedal fills that need. It's pretty easy to sweep from slow to fast and can be left in any position. The mix and output controls on the side are easily used although I pretty much keep them in the fully off positions. The switch for mode selection between "script" and "block" is great but it's inside the battery opening. I keep it in the script/softer setting anyway but it would be nice to have the bolder block sound immediately on tap. I have the pedal Velcro attached so it's inconvenient for me. Not sure what sort of bypass there is, it's not mentioned anywhere, but I couldn't detect any signal loss or change when placed inline between guitar, amp and other pedals. Otherwise, great sounds, easy to use and very good quality.

Finally they updated unit with on/off switch, I figured "worth trying out". How could I go wrong with "custom shop" model. Mine was new and no phase effects signal would pass. Not my idea of "custom shop" where surface mount parts do not provide room on board to modify with good parts if it worked. Perhaps this sting will make me never consider dumlop effects.

Comments about MXR CSP-001X Variphase Pedal:

This is a great phase pedal, like a phase 90 crossed with a wah, and as far as the effects go it's great. My only complaint is that it doesn't operate as smoothly as my wah pedal which makes it hard to change the effect speed precisely. I can probably open it up or have it repaired, but I shouldn't have to, given what I paid for it. Besides that though, no complaints. Plus the color looks awesome in contrast with my other pedals. I recommend this one!

Ps. Sounds surprisingly good for basses too!
