I own a very powerful and very versitile four channel tube amplifier made by an American company known for making Duel Rectified Amps and while I will never buy another amp, I have been batteling through a love/ hate relationship with it for three years because with all of it's endless gain, it is so round in the bottom end, it can't pull of squeelling harmonics at will. Having said that, the MXR/ Custom Audio Electronics Overdrive is a dream come true. This pedal will inject power back into your ORIGINAL tone and not change a thing. It goes like this: Problem--->MXR Overdrive--->No Problem. It's that simple. with the level control around 9 o'clock, there is enough edge to do whatever you need without causing an ounce of noise, even with ungodly amounts of high gain. This is the last overdrive pedal I plan on purchasing and thanks to my Boss overdrive, Zakk Overdrive and My MXR 10-band eq, I now have all the door stops I will ever need. The only negative thing I can mention is that when I removed the big CE sticker from the side of the chasis, it took a HUGE chunk of paint with it. This obviously doesn't effect the performance of the item and I only mention it in case you are concerned with cosmetics. I promise this is an excellent buy for clean amps, dirty amps, in between amps and the Great American Death Bringers alike. You will not be sorry.

This pedal is crap! I have to wonder how many times MXR (Dunlop) can repackage the Boss SD-1 pedal. First was the Wylde overdrive and now this. I guess if you repaint a pedal or put someones name on it you can charge double the price. I was using this pedal in front of a clean Fender amp to give it a little dirt and this thing sucked compared to a $40 Boss pedal. I think it is built well but you have to take the whole back plate off to get to the battery and that can be a real pain. Not worth the money and the only thing custom shop about this is maybe the paint!

Get loud FAST

By http://www.myspace.com/irancontraaffair

from Portland, OR

The Overdrive tone is a nice traditional crunchy sound (Gain @ 10 o'clock, Tone @ 12 noon). On it's own, going into a Traynor 80Watt tube combo, it turns the clean channel into a nice high gain crunch (although it seems to do very little to the lead channel's tone, but I should tinker more). Not yet sure where to place it with the rest of my signal chain, (currently all Boss, TU-2->CS-3->DF-2).My only warning would be that it gets almost uncontrollably loud REAL FAST (i.e., Output at 12 noon or higher).

Great Pedal,

By MXRkid

I have owned this pedal for a little while and it sounds great (like all mxr equipment). If you are expecting a mild overdrive coming out of this pedal, forget about it. This pedal gives you amazingly transparent, thick, classic rock overdrive, all the way to an aggressive distortion. It has a ton of output, and too much gain will give feedback. Overall, a great pedal that "sounds expensive."

Does what I need

By El Podo

Got one three months ago and I dig it. It can be used as a clean boost with the gain all the way down and the output up, or as a traditional overdrive pedal. Sounds great as a boost to a distortion pedal, too. If you don't want to sound like everyone else, but still get a great tube overdrive sound, then this pedal is for you.

Probably the best OD pedal under $100

By Guitarjunkie87

Well, MXR certainly did a much better job on this overdrive pedal than they did with the ZW-44 IMO. I had originally picked up a TS9 TubeScreamer not too long ago to tighten up my Mesa Boogie F-50 and give it a bit more scream for solos, and it did that, but I found it to be too tone coloring and lacking in the low end dept. Then I was told to give this pedal a shot. It was far superior to the TS9 in every way possible. The overall sound is much clearer, more transparent, and has tighter bass response, making it both ideal for boosting amps or using it by itself for a nice, warm crunch. Watch out though, as this thing has a ton of gain for an OD, so use it sparingly, or be prepared to deal w/quite a bit of noise. Other than that though, this pedal rocks! It's my new favorite pedal

A bit much mid range for my tastes

By Jason the Bender of Steel

Great pedal, warm drive with a rich midrangey tone similar to a tubescreamer. Just not quite my style. I'm more of a Metal/Hard Rock guy and I need more of a scooped sound in my overdrives. If I do an A/B comparison in tone (not gain or volume) there is huge noticeable difference in the midrange so it doesn't quite suit my sound, but I think I'll keep it and play around with it some more. But I am going to try a different pedal like the Boss SD-1 or OD-3, or maybe even the Wylde Overdrive. All in all though, this thing does have a lot of punch and clarity. Great pedal for the money.

Not just a tubescreamer clone

By The Fury-e0h03

from Portsmouth, Va

While the green box and similar controls may make this look like another tubescreamer clone, this pedal is much more than that. This thing works great as a boost on a gain channel or as a stand alone overdrive. With the gain cranked, this is the best hard rock overdrive I have ever heard. This little pedal puts out a TON of boost. I had the volume around 9 oclock and it still boosted the volume. Overall a fantsic, versitile little box.One con is the switch on mine gave out after a couple of mounths of light use.

MXR GT OD

By Anonymous

from Undisclosed

I use a Marshall 1987S head. This pedal is what an overdrive pedal should be, rich thick harmonics with a sustain that last forever. I used ocd boss and marshall, rat, analog, keeley ext.. I went back to mxr pedals that I grew up on in the 70's- they still cant be beat.

Just Needed A Boost

By Ides_of _Ruin

from Alma, AR

I originaly got this pedal cause it was recomended by another trusted guitarist I know to give me a sound for lead. I thought it would just make my sound louder and ballsier...Boy was I wrong! It does that and more. I now use this for more of a treble boost with a little gain for good measures. This peddle can also be used as a distortion pedal and get a damn good crunch out of. It is by far the best pedal aquisiton I've made yet.
