OVERVIEW

Classic EVH flanging tonality!

Dunlop and Edward Van Halen have collaborated to bring back the classic tone of the MXR Flanger that powered timeless Van Halen tunes like "Unchained" and "And the Cradle Will Rock." The result of their effort is the MXR EVH 117 Flanger, a stompbox with the same bucket-brigade technology that provided the sweeping, whooshing magic of the original. This updated model comes with the EVH Switch, which instantly calls up Eddie's "Unchained" sound with the exact settings used to get the original guitar tone. On top of that, it comes painted with the cool striped graphics Eddie used to customize his guitars.

FEATURES
  • Manual, Speed, Width, and Regeneration controls
  • EVH Switch activates preset Manual, Speed, Width, and Regeneration settings for instant "Unchained" tone
  • Original bucket-brigade circuit
  • Die-cast housing

This is 'that sound.'

First some quick background: I've played for over 20 years. I've played SEVERAL flanger pedals looking for the VH sound. I've owned SEVERAL Digitech processors (my mistake). Each processor had between 4 and 8 flangers 'built in' to it.

NOTHING I'VE EVER PLAYED CAN HOLD A CANDLE TO THE EVH FLANGER! Seriously. Nothing has came close to this flanger.

It's analog and it's great. The beauty of this pedal is, you can dial in your own settings and then simply press the EVH button to acquire the VH flange setting--allowing you to have 'your' setting and Eddie's.

I have read from several sources that Eddie only used ONE setting on his flanger for all VH songs...and I believe that! While the EVH button works for Unchained, it also works for On Fire, Hear About it Later, Mean Street, The Seventh Seal, or really any VH song that a flanger was used.

Ironically, the knob settings on the Amazon pic are EXACTLY the settings for the Van Halen flange, but without pressing the EVH button. --Trust me, I played with this for hours to figure out what the settings actually are. To my surprise, after having figured it out, they are on several pics of this pedal!

Here are the exact VH settings:
Manual: 10:00
Width: 10:00-11:00
Speed: 11:00
Regen: 5:00 (Max)

I've had a DOD flanger (yeah, remember those?), I've tried Boss, and the countless Digitech flangers built in to my processors...

You really need a MXR flanger to replicate that VH flange.

However, this is a 'fan's only' type pedal. The regular MXR flanger (117 I think) will do this too, but without the VH button. This is a fantastic analog flanger that will allow you to create your own flange while being able to instantly switch to a VH flange with the press of a button.

I've never used a better flanger than this, and HIGHLY recommend this pedal if you are looking for a great analog and/or VH flanger.

I got this pedal, and immediately upon opening the box, I noticed that the light under the EVH switch was broken. It was physically broken off and did not light. Also, the red indicator light went out when the EVH swith was engaged. It sounded really good, but there were times when it would make my volume drop and kick back in, even when in the bypass mode, and as one other reviewer stated, it pops when turing it on and off. I had an original MXR flanger that I somehow messed up by pluging in a guitar with active pickups. THis new one did not sound anywhere near as THICK as the original. I am hoping that all these issues are realated to the fact that it is indeed dmaged. I have another on the way, so I will find out. I would also like to add that this thing takes TWO 9v batteries and it sucked them up in about 45 minutes! At 189.00 Dunlop could have provided the 18v Adapter that you need to keep this thing running! I also would like to say that I have owned 4 MXR pedals over the last 4 years and the swithces seem to be going on 3 of them, which is not good due to the fact that I kept them in my rack and they were always on, so the swithces didn't get hardly any use as I used a switcher to put them in and out of my signal.

I had it for 3 days and I just could not stop playing.I use my lp gibs.with my twin reverb fender amp.And I love every minute of it.I went to my local guitar shop and expirement with other flangers. From boss, etc. And the saleman recommend this.I thought,oh, another celeb. indurse item with an expensive $$$ So I tried it and that was it.Its the best flanger I've ever had.I wish I never sold the one I had some 20 years ago back in High School.Looking for a flanger, don't look no more. This is the one (EVH) to get. It's worth every dime.

Not impressed.

Comments about MXR EVH-117 Eddie Van Halen Flanger:

I'm sorry, but this pedal isn't even worth the price. I wasn't impressed, the casing is strong, the tone is there, but the bypass sucks. Pops when going in and out, not enough speed on the dial, limited range. I'll take my electric mistress any day over this POS.

Comments about MXR EVH-117 Eddie Van Halen Flanger:

Adding the MXR EVH Flanger to my set up was a big improvement. It not only gives me a different sound to use off anf on during an evening, but it also seems to clean up some of my faster playing and make it sound more modern. The EVH button doesn't do much for me, but the variations of flanges you can get by setting the four different knobs are pretty much endless.

Another Good Pedal By MXR

By Mertalfreak 0551

from Casper WY.

Comments about MXR EVH-117 Eddie Van Halen Flanger:

This is the second MXR pedal that I've bought in 5 years ,a ten band EQ and now the EVH 117 Flanger and I use them both just about daily. I love the sound quality out of it.It doesn't sound real tiny or metallic like the cheap ones do and it doesn't produce a lot of noise and when your playing a high end amp like my Mesa Boogie Roadster that's important. It's built pretty tough just like the other one is. Although it takes a little getting used to to find the sound that you want cause there's a lot of different sounds with this.the EVH button is nice as a preset to access on stage but its not easy to hit something an 1/8 of an inch when your on stage without hitting one of the knobs so in my opinion they should have put it on as another push button like the main one is. So if your looking for a good quality flanger that's simple to work this is definitely the one, spending a little extra is worth it.

Only one thats better, but a little pricing

Comments about MXR EVH-117 Eddie Van Halen Flanger:

This little flange is great! I would recommend this to anyone. Personally I think the EH Flanger Hoax is much better and is the same price. I wish I got the standard MXR Flanger though $20 extra just for a certain setting for unchained please I could just listen to the song to figure that one out. Anyway solid pedal just a little to pricey.

Best day of my life!

By Angus Rules

Comments about MXR EVH-117 Eddie Van Halen Flanger:

This site has provided low income musicians like me, the ability to purchase quality musical instruments and accessories at great prices. I am also very appreciative of the incredible service, and rapid delivery of my little baby. I had dreamed of the day when I could buy this box, I saved every nickel for about 2 years, saving returnable cans and bottles to help. I have a bad back, so I am not employed, but don?t think for a minute that means I can?t rock the house! After I ordered it, I couldn?t sleep for 3 nights as I awaited its delivery. When it arrived I almost knocked the delivery guy over as I ran to grab my box! The packaging was incredible, and it included a great deal of detailed information, and literature. The white and black design was mesmerizing, I almost didn?t want to step on it, and wanted to mount it on my wall as art. Then I got to rocking, even my mom thought I sounded like EVH! All in all I give it a 10!

Not really impressed

Comments about MXR EVH-117 Eddie Van Halen Flanger:

I bought this effect expecting it to be like the old MXR flanger of the 1980s. It was not. It is a decently made unit, but was very noisy and just simply did not sound very good at all. I sent it back.

Best Flanger

Comments about MXR EVH-117 Eddie Van Halen Flanger:

I have owned this Flanger and the EVH Phase 90 for probably 3-4 years combined and have yet found either of them to let me down. The flanger is loud and dominating. Unlike other flangers where the effect is minimal, this flanger does exactly what you want. The EVH button gives you Eddie's signature Flange sound from the likes of "Unchained" and "...And the cradle will rock", which is a great tone, but it's more fun to find your own sound.

An Alright Pedal

By TheMan2009

Comments about MXR EVH-117 Eddie Van Halen Flanger:

This pedal is pretty nice for a couple of reasons. First, the housing is like friggin die-cast tank plating, meaning it won't cheap out and break on you. Also all the knobs have a wide range of the effects they provide. Now before I get into the bad parts of this pedal let me just tell you that I think that Eddie Van Halen is the best guitar player who has ever walked the earth. Do not think for one second that if you buy this pedal, you'll automatically sound just like Edward on "Unchained" or "Hear about it later". You need the right woods, the right pickups, the right finish, etc. to get that tone (trust me, I've been searching for that perfect "unchained" tone for years). I hooked it up to a Gibson ES-345 just to see what would happen and it sounded like crap. It's not Gibson's or MXR's fault. It's just that the two don't work well together tonally. Also the paintjob looks cool but it really will look corny up on stage if you're not Eddie. Lastly the evh switch does get you a little bit closer to the tone and sound, but you could just find it by dialing it in, so it's not worth the extra cash. All in all, the flanging on this pedal is great. It really delivers as do most all MXR products. The only bad thing is that you need the right guitar to sound like Eddie, even with the evh switch.
