Great sounding pedal works incredibly IF the rest of your gear is at least decent. BUT if you are playing through a solid state amp or a fender squire you don't want this pedal. It's designed to be used with good gear. Those complaining it doesn't have enough growl for death metal must be playing through a line 6 or similarly poorly designed amp. or simply just don't know how to dial their amp in. I run it through my Randall amp (tube and yes through the clean effects loop in the back) and it gets more low end growl than i need for death metal. it's goes from heavy mud distortion to super bright distortion and everything in between. oh and you got two channels of it!!! no need for a 3 channel amp with this beast.

If you buy this distortion for heavy rock sounds - look elsewhere. I tried it through quite a few amps and it could never achieve the sounds I was after. I tested it on clean amp - Fender Princeton (solid state) and my 2 Marshalls, Valvestate 8100 (solidstate) and JCM900(tube). It is good for bluesy tones but distortion 1 when you dial little gain. When you crank the gain it gets out of control and not ina good way. It gets buzzy and lifeless. Distortion #2 (the bottom one) is totally useless. It sounds like a fuzz at max and is totally uncontrollable. Again - at low settings it gets some nice rock/bluesy sounds but nothing to write home about.Compared to other distortion units I own (Sansamp TRI-OD, H&K Tubeman), while this unit is well built and loaded with features, all the rest beat it in the tone department.

Good Distortion

I've always searched for a distortion pedal that could give me everything i desired from warm fuzzy riff's to bright lead parts along with man things in between. I use this pedal 3rd in a line of 17 pedals, using a custom guitar with lindy fralin pickups amplified with a fender bassman amp. This pedal does it all the distortion on the bottom with the bass boost enhanced is very nice i keep the gain pretty low so it doesn't get to dirty. The top distortion with the mid cut button in isn't to great, but with out it is pretty crazy, i can get sounds that sound like an analog recording, blowntube, dead battery, smooth overdrive, to shrill erie sounds, i use it most for bright lead parts. Overall i think the pedal is a winner, built well, sounds great, can't go wrong with that combination.

SUCKS!!!!

By Joezart

from San Jose, Ca

This pedal really sucks! The bottom channel is a fuzz, not a distortion. And the top channel still sounds really weak, even for metal. Just don't buy it. Also sounds like its coming through an AM transistor radio. Just sucks

this is a great sounding pedal. the first channel screams and the second channel is great for boosting your guitar if you want to solo. the second channel is a little on the treble side, but that can be good for solo's. overall a great sounding pedal.

mxr m-151 distortion rocks

One of the best distortion pedals I have used in years, and I have them all. I also keep them all to do comparisons with. This one reminds me of that Randy Rhoads tone. The EQ is very sensitive and at times it borders on uncontrollable, which is a good thing when you are playing live music. Second only to the Dime Distortion.

I dont see why everyone dislikes this pedal. I can get any sound I want out of it. It can go from tube screamer-ish to full out metal and super fuzzy. The only thing is that it's sorta pricey, but i think it's well worth it.

If God Used a Distortion Pedal....

By randyfan2008

This pedal is by far the most versitile distortion ever. I use the top channel for the screaming leads with a bassier edge. The second channel can be used to fatten the leads on the higher three strings (high e, G, and B). When I played the first channel through the clean channel of my Marshall MG30DFX, it made a real classic hard rock sound such as Ozzy or Deep Purple. The second channel on a clean amp sounded like 60's rock such as Jimi Hendrix and Cream. So. overall, this pedal's first channel will turn your clean amp into a hard rockin machine and a dirty amp into a lethal weapon. The second channel will turn the clean amp into a fuzz machine and a dirty amp into a Nu Metal monster such as Linkin Park or Korn. You will need to adjust the equalization to find the sound you want. Get familiar with it, learn to utilize all of the functions on it and I think you will see that this is the greatest distortion pedal ever.

Jim Dunlop makes the best pedals of all! Ive tried lots of other distortion and this one is the best. No nose, very loud output. And TWO distortions in one!

m-151

By cHroNiC

I bought this pedal from this site a while back. And for the most part, this pedal is pretty wicked. One problem I do have with it, though, is that it takes a lot of effort to produce a good sound out of it. Once you get it right it sounds awesome, though. This thing is built like a tank, so there isn't much worry of it breaking. Overall, it's a great pedal if you're looking for something with tons of different sounds.
