To the point they say--here goes!
Most of the positive reviews are simply dead on, and most of the negative are a little extreme! Shades of novice are all over the bad mouthing going on here!
The metal guys have it right, the VK100 is not a HIGH gain metal head, so glad it's not! It is not however, a one trick pony either, gotta get that.
Again, this head is not an every man's answer to tube performance, But, it is gonna meet the needs of the many for sure. Why? because it is a fairly neutral, straight forward design, the tube tone is what we are after, and it IS in there, BUT, it takes some tweaking to get it out, really not that bad if your mindset is teachable and ready to accept new modes. Too many of us have a preset in our minds, too high hopes with an unrealistic expectation of new equipment, gonna be set up for a disappointment right there!
Simply stated, the VK100 does most things right, yes, the reverb is somewhat fizzy,[the effects loop makes up for that] but used in a lite coloration is OK! Be warned, too much reverb can create some of the adverse problems noted in these reviews, like feedback, and thinned out tone. We all have a tendency to think that more is always good, careful there, especially with this head.
The presence and resonance controls add some tonal possibilities, but again, less is probably more, these can be easily overdone. The texture blend control on the back can also create problems like too much saturation with power loss, more mud if ya please! Setting it full on may be the best in most situations, live for sure, note, it really is not a tone control.
Some final observations, the guitar setup is relative, singles, humbuckers, solid body, semi- acoustic, each pose a different kind of EQ, one size can never fit all. Just readjusting the pickup height and setting proper bridge to neck balance can make a huge difference in any guitars tonal range and response, which will definitely be reflected in the amps performance! Garbage in, garbage out is for real.
Even the gauge of strings, and the many tuning modes of our time have become an important issue for pro players since the wrong setup poses a palate of problems such as less sustain, weak output, and the dreaded fret out. Fret out, especially in distortion modes, cancels note power as it adds harsh/edgy metallic twang and discordant harmonics, these together will make any head/amp become harsh and uncontrollable.
In conclusion, the VK100 IS a high power head and needs speakers with adequate power handling, a single 12" cab is gonna disappoint, a 2x12" cab will work well if the speakers are of pro performance quality and build strength. A 4x12" cab is probably what the designers had in mind and most players will get all they need or want from that setup!
The neat thing is, this Peavey is adaptable to most players needs, taking some time to tweak with an open mind will result in some pleasant tonal surprises indeed! At this price point, the VK100 truly is a winner! Affordable/reliable tube tone on a budget, Oh yeah!

Got this to replace my crappy Marshall solid-state head. So far, I'm very happy! I'm using a Line 6 POD X3 to drive it, so I wasn't looking for too many bells and whistles, just a solid and powerful amp with good tone. And that's what she is. IF you have some good other hardware to generate your distortions and effects, then look no further. But if you're looking for an all-in-one solution then this amp might not be for you, at least if you're into heavy stuff. I play a lot of metal, and in my opinion the distortion tones I got with just the amp were mediocre at best. However the clean tones you can get are really good, and my POD has never sounded better! My one gripe is that it doesn't include the footswitch (sold separately). But for the money, I couldn't possibly ask for a better head.
The class A / AB "texture" control is a nice feature. Other than that, it's a pretty basic amp.
Well-built, feels solid. My lead guitarist has had one for over a year now and it's still as good as new. I knocked one star off because the handle strap feels a little iffy, it's probably fine, but did make me a little nervous picking it up.
I don't think you will find a better all-tube amp for the price. I looked hard.

I am in 2 rock cover bands and this amp really gets the job done. I just played my first show with it last weekend and all I can say is wow. I am a Marshall guy but Marshall has really been dropping the ball lately on their tube heads. Peavey has really delivered with this product. Not only is it cheap, it is also tight and punchy. Granted I am playing it through a a full stack. You really need to take your time to dial it in though. The one thing I noticed with this amp is that if you use 2 or 3 guitars live you have to dial it in to that guitar. Which isn't a big deal. Usually it is very minor tweeking. You can really hear the characteristics of each guitar through this head. It doesn't come with a footswitch but any duel footswitch will work with it. I couldn't really be more happy with my sound now.

Comments about Peavey ValveKing 100 Head:
Overall, this is fantastic. If you're on a budget (like 99% of us), this is the one. This amp should really be considered; I think everyone should have one of these in their arsenal. I wish I still had mine. I love the distortion in this amp, and again, for the money you cant beat that. I would reccommend getting the footswitch as well, it'll make playing a better experience.
If you find one in a store, you sould really give it a try.
I used to have one of these bad boys. And it was awesome. A clean and distortion channel with the infamous 'Bright' button, which gives you a sick boost. The built in reverb is fun to fiddle with and it also has an fx loop if you do so desire. The presence and resonance knobs really let you shape the tone to the way you want. You can some pretty nice jazz sounds out of the clean channel, and those who say this amp isnt made for metal are complete idiots (fact). This amp has some sick distortion, especially when it's cranked. It's not the super-scooped modern distortion (which is getting kinda lame anymore honestly), but its more of a raw, almost provoking sounding distortion. I dont like using pedals, so this was perfect. If you're looking for a good analog distortion, look into the VK.
The one I had was a lot older than this one, think it was about 10 years old. It never gave me any problems. A friend of mine has a newer one like this one, and it's solid as well. I've never heard anyone say anything bad about the quality, nor have I ever experienced any myself. Good, solid stuff.
For the money, this thing is incredible. You really cant do much better. It's all tube, has great tone, its reliable, versitle, and its cheap (the best part). Other amps for this much dont have nearly the sound or the quality of this little monster.

I bought this amp brand new at Feburary so around 7 months, and this amp did do its job, the amp kicked at gigs, the problem now I'm having with this head is that, when I turned it on one day, light didn't show up, volts didn't light the tubes, pretty much the amp was malfunctioning. I have now sent it back twince this month, it did the same problem 3 weeks ago, had to ship it to Peavey. If they are gonna make good heads, please make it my money's worth, cause seriously? I am 17 and on a budget and thats why I got this amp. Good amp with tone period, but come on Peavey!! Make it so that I dont have to keep sending it in for repair!! Very amp emergency....
Comments about Peavey ValveKing 100 Head:
An amazing amp. Dont even doubt it. I bought it off of ebay. I cant be happier. It has more gain than you will ever need. For those who have written bad reviews, I cannot understand why they did. This amp just rocks. And for the price you can beat it. So many cool features. I cant put into words how awesome the amp is. Just get the amp and stop reading reviews becuase it is the best thing you can find to play just about everyting. And it is great for METALLICA!

Comments about Peavey ValveKing 100 Head:
The valveking is not made for metal. It doesn't take pedals well. You can play old guy rock with it maybe some thrash but can't get a modern scooped tone. Its loud but won't take distortion pedals well anything with lows of low end will bottom out the amp. I've tried every pedal you can imagine and different cabs it will take a overdrive and that's it. My recommendation is to buy a bugera 1960 and buy a metal muff. Bugera had fixed their reliability issues in the summer of 2009 and are great amps. Don't waste your money on this peavey rip-off they need to discontinue this thing or market it to blues player or classic rock players.
Comments about Peavey ValveKing 100 Head:
This head is the best for metal and hard rock, it has great gain and i've had this head for 4 years and it has stood the test of time for me. I havnt had to replace any tubes and have dont mini tours with this head. awesome deal if you cant find a 5150 head or buy a new 6505 head.
