To the point they say--here goes!
Most of the positive reviews are simply dead on, and most of the negative are a little extreme! Shades of novice are all over the bad mouthing going on here!
The metal guys have it right, the VK100 is not a HIGH gain metal head, so glad it's not! It is not however, a one trick pony either, gotta get that.
Again, this head is not an every man's answer to tube performance, But, it is gonna meet the needs of the many for sure. Why? because it is a fairly neutral, straight forward design, the tube tone is what we are after, and it IS in there, BUT, it takes some tweaking to get it out, really not that bad if your mindset is teachable and ready to accept new modes. Too many of us have a preset in our minds, too high hopes with an unrealistic expectation of new equipment, gonna be set up for a disappointment right there!
Simply stated, the VK100 does most things right, yes, the reverb is somewhat fizzy,[the effects loop makes up for that] but used in a lite coloration is OK! Be warned, too much reverb can create some of the adverse problems noted in these reviews, like feedback, and thinned out tone. We all have a tendency to think that more is always good, careful there, especially with this head.
The presence and resonance controls add some tonal possibilities, but again, less is probably more, these can be easily overdone. The texture blend control on the back can also create problems like too much saturation with power loss, more mud if ya please! Setting it full on may be the best in most situations, live for sure, note, it really is not a tone control.
Some final observations, the guitar setup is relative, singles, humbuckers, solid body, semi- acoustic, each pose a different kind of EQ, one size can never fit all. Just readjusting the pickup height and setting proper bridge to neck balance can make a huge difference in any guitars tonal range and response, which will definitely be reflected in the amps performance! Garbage in, garbage out is for real.
Even the gauge of strings, and the many tuning modes of our time have become an important issue for pro players since the wrong setup poses a palate of problems such as less sustain, weak output, and the dreaded fret out. Fret out, especially in distortion modes, cancels note power as it adds harsh/edgy metallic twang and discordant harmonics, these together will make any head/amp become harsh and uncontrollable.
In conclusion, the VK100 IS a high power head and needs speakers with adequate power handling, a single 12" cab is gonna disappoint, a 2x12" cab will work well if the speakers are of pro performance quality and build strength. A 4x12" cab is probably what the designers had in mind and most players will get all they need or want from that setup!
The neat thing is, this Peavey is adaptable to most players needs, taking some time to tweak with an open mind will result in some pleasant tonal surprises indeed! At this price point, the VK100 truly is a winner! Affordable/reliable tube tone on a budget, Oh yeah!

I bought this amp brand new at Feburary so around 7 months, and this amp did do its job, the amp kicked at gigs, the problem now I'm having with this head is that, when I turned it on one day, light didn't show up, volts didn't light the tubes, pretty much the amp was malfunctioning. I have now sent it back twince this month, it did the same problem 3 weeks ago, had to ship it to Peavey. If they are gonna make good heads, please make it my money's worth, cause seriously? I am 17 and on a budget and thats why I got this amp. Good amp with tone period, but come on Peavey!! Make it so that I dont have to keep sending it in for repair!! Very amp emergency....

Comments about Peavey ValveKing 100 Head:

Wow! This amp is a beast! So clean and powerful.I was impressed by the quality of sound. Plugged it up with minor adjustments,no pedals, played an Em chord and it sounded like the Outlaws Greengrass and High tides. Yep I was playing old Outlaws tunes for a while as the smell of new tubes filled my nostrils. Finally got around to using pedals and was equally impressed. The different tonalities of my Nighthawk become really apparent with this amp. My other amps seem to mask the tones capable by this guitar.Even on 1 setting this amp is louder than my 150w stereo. I play Blues rock so this amp is perfect for me. The Les Paul is so suited to this amp especially when you consider the warmth and quality of sound. The texture knob on the back really changes things with a twist. Hit the lead channel(hope you have ear plugs)gets loud and dirty!Nice! Metal guys will probably want some seriously dirty pedals for her but she's up to the challenge. I have always found some sweet deals from Musician's Friend but I have to say this is the best yet! I really like all of the different adjustments available with this amp. Allows you to tailor your sound. I'm using the Valve King 4-12 slant enclosure and it's a perfect match.Get the footswitch and you're set.Gotta go,tuned up and ready to practice! Check this amp out you'll be impressed!

Finally got a tub amp for a great price. Amp sounds good either on it's own or with my pedal board. I got the controller for the amp after it was delivered and set up. If you play guitar you should not have a problem using and getting the sound you want out of it. I use on my board 3 distortion pedals, reverb, Chorus, and a delay with tap input. After warranty runs out I will go in and adjust the reverb springs, till then I use my pedal set on spring!

Comments about Peavey ValveKing 100 Head:

I bought this amp head because of the great price for this level of amp. I could not find anything else even close in price for this all tube amp head. I set the switch to 8 ohms and played it through a Fender Hot Rod Cab with one 12 inch speaker. It is rated at 80 watts and 8 ohms, and I only wanted the tone, not tons of volume. It sounded great with my PRS Custom 24 and actually better with my Epiphone ES-339 Pro. I just wanted a clean warm sound with reverb, and this amp head gave it to me. However, after about 45 minutes of tweaking and playing, it made a few popping sounds, and the light went out. It was dead. I called Musician's Friend, and they had me another one on the way that day. I shipped mine back on Monday, and I got the new one on Wednesday, and love it. Naturally I am a little concerned about the possibility of this one doing the same thing as the other one. When I got the second amp head yesterday, the end of the package was completely open. I opened it and couldn't see any outside damage, and so far it is working perfectly. I do think a fragile instrument this weight should be double boxed with bubble wrap between them to protect them from shocks. At this weight, the amp is most likely dropped less than gently several times during shipment, and should be packaged much better, in my opinion, in order to buffer a little rough handling, especially around the holidays when they are so busy. If this amp proves to be as reliable as most Peavey amps, I will be very happy, and it will be more than worth the money. As always, Musician's Friend could not have been more helpful in this purchase and the exchange for a new one.

This wonderful Amp reminds me of a Fender dual Concert amp I had in my High School Days . The classic quad 6L6CG with 12AX7A preamp design is a proven durable path of great sound to music heaven ! The added features make it even more versitile . The weight is more of an indication of solid construction and good quality than a minus ... carry it with care ! If you love tube sound yet have to watch your bank balence buy this amp !

Comments about Peavey ValveKing 100 Head:

This AMP is built to Last (like ALL Peavey Amps).

I had seen so many Marshalls go in for repair that I became a Peavey customer in the 1970's

This AMP has great to for Clean, Crunch, and Rock.
If your are in to newer Metal, consider a different AMP that has scoop dial, or use a rectifier scoop pedal with this AMP.

This AMP is LOAD, sounds great (very little hum with pedals - NO HUMM plugged straight in to Amp - even at loud volumes).

Texture feature is great for recording at lower volumes.

DOES NOT include footswitch, yeah that stinks, but you can buy one here for a fair price.

Totally reccomend this Amp - I bought it as a backup for my Vintage 1979 Peavey RockMaster head, but because this amp is better, I will retire the RockMaster and buy a 2'nd ValveKing for road work.

Bottom Line - Great Tone and Value for the money!

For the most part the comments pretty much say it all on this one, the only thing i wanted to add is that I've had this amp for a year now and it's still sounds great but the stand by switch is a little weird and occasionally I need to play with it a bit to get it to go but i'm sure it would be a cheap fix just haven't done it yet. Otherwise it's a great amp!

If you are looking for head crushing tone, or even some good powerful metal tone, keep going, this is not the head for you. It is loud, and will really kick for some, but not for metal players. I hope this review will save someone from making a bad purchase like i did. Its a sexy looking head, and it has lots of options and volume, but lacks in the BALLS department. I WOULD RECOMMEND THIS TO A NON-METAL FRIEND/PLAYER
