One channel, one speaker—one kickin' tube amp.

The single-channel Windsor Studio amplifier features a footswitchable Boost button that increases the preamp level. Now you have the flexibility of a dual-channel amp plus control over the dynamic response. You also get the rich distortion characteristics of Windsor amp's class-A tube power topology. The Boost function can be used as an overdrive feature for the power section or simply as a volume boost for soloing.
This 15-watt amplifier uses two 12AX7 preamp tubes and one EL34 power-amp tube in a single-ended configuration with no negative feedback. The power section is designed to accommodate 6L6GC, 6550, 6CA7, KT88 and KT66 octal power tubes, as well as variations on those types. Peavey's exclusive Power Sponge™ output attenuator incrementally adjusts the power output of the amplifier while maintaining the distortion characteristics of the power amp at any chosen volume level. Also onboard is a transformer-balanced XLR direct output with a unique microphone simulator that allows players to send the amplifier signal to a recording device or front-of-house mix without the use of a microphone. Additional features on this Peavey amp include true spring reverb, preamp volume, master volume, three-band tone equalization, footswitchable effects loop and a single 12" loudspeaker.

OK, I bought this used, in like new conditio, on eBay. Great dirty grind, but no clean headroom. Read a lot of mods on the net, but wanted to see what I could to non-invasively. V1 to Groove Tubes 12AY7. V2 to Groove Tubes 12AX7-C. Power tube to Winged C (SED) KT88. Speaker to Emminence "The Wizard". Remove Power Soak (easy mod, no chassis removal). Wow! This thing is really loud! Goes from thight clean to gritty overdrive with just using the guitar volume knob. Only amp that I have ever been able to do this with that I have ever owned. One other simle trick. Get a simple two amp signal switch (Rapco) and the Peavey optional Boost/Effects Loop pedal. Plug guitar into signal switch and send one output to Low Gain input and the other output to the High Gain input (does not matter in which order). You now have the choice of:
1: Low gain (one output selected)
    2: Low gain plus boost
3: High gain (both outputs selected)
    4: High gain plus boost
This may be a one channel amp, but this gives you a lot of sonic options.

This amp is very good if you are willing to upgrade it. The stck EL34 to me sounded horrible and the stock speaker makes everything sound thing and shrilly. I had a 6L6 and an Eminence GB sitting around and it approved the sound considerably. This won't do rock tones unless your rock tones are in the Beatles, ELO type, st least mine wouldn't. I have heard some that sounded decent, but my chinese variant couldn't do it. I added a EH Metal Muff, and it now sounds great for rock music. The thing is loud too, it has no problems hanging out with my drummer.I am not new to tube amps, I have two XXX's, have had Crate Stealths, VC50, two Epiphone Valve Stds, an Epi Valve jr, and Peavey Valveking head and combo at one time or another and always wanted to try this out. Stock, this isn't any better than my Epiphone Valve Std, just louder, in fact it was more sterile than the Epi, but with the changes it does the job, and sounds real nice. I would recommend this amp, and with the changes give this a four star rating, but only if you have the money to upgrade it.

Comments about Peavey Windsor Studio 20W 1x12 Tube Combo Amp:

this is a great amp, loud enough to jam with my hard hitting drummer buddy and can be dialled down with power soak for bedroom volumes. its light and portable and does all i could ask for. got mine used and came with sovtek 6550 tube which sounds clean and loud. id definitely recommend changing stock tubes and speaker. the amp sounds terrible with the stock blue marvel speaker but don't let that fool you, plug in to an external cab with good speakers or upgrade the speaker and you'll be laughing at how little you paid for such an awesome sound.

      Good Starter Tube Amp

      By GNM

Comments about Peavey Windsor Studio 20W 1x12 Tube Combo Amp:

Great amp, i'm going to use it at a larger gig in two days for the first time, but i'm very entusiastic about it. It's loud on the highest power output settings and almost all the way inbetween.
If you're considering buying a Marshall or a tube amp to start you out in gigging, this is perfect. It's one of the best in its price range.
This amp runs on tubes identical to some Marshall amp, i'm not quite sure of the model. It's got several different tube driven gain options and can get a beefy drive on any channel and a clean channel through the low gain input. The boost is handy, the reverb is fine tuned, and not excessive like other amplifiers. The EQ is "interactive" which means that having the Mid an Treble knobs up will also boost the notes inbetween in a sweeping effect. This sounds very nice for soloing. It also comes with this sweet knob on the back which turns down the voltage of the tubes, allowing you to turn down the volume without turning down the tone, making for versatality in any venue or just for practicing in your room.

There are 2 outputs for a basic speaker. I think it could be run as a cab for a much larger speaker set than the built in blue marvel speaker which itself is great, the size is perfect for recording as it's whole foot diameter gives plenty of choices for microphone placement. It also comes with a built in recording output that is built to simulate a microphone. I used this to record a few days after buying the amp and it sounds great! It can also be used to mix into a PA system and sounds great.
The tubes that came with the amp are awesome. The connection is great and you can easily get driven tones by pumping the first gain. It does sound alot like a Marshall combo amp in its tone and the way the circuitry acts, which was pleasant especially for me.
If you mellow out the tubes and turn down your tone, you can find a great clean sound, good for even jazz. It takes a little work to get those out, but you'll know it once you find it. Most people said there isn't a clean tone on it, but i intend to use it almost entirely on the clean tone.
This much for a tube amp that simulates a Marshall plus some sweet features that are convienent and well put together. A great deal.

      Royal amplification

Comments about Peavey Windsor Studio 20W 1x12 Tube Combo Amp:

I bought this amp very shortly after Peavy released it about 4 years ago now and I've waited awhile to give it a proper review. This amp has become my go to amp for small gigs and jamming not too mention recording. It get's allot of heavy use and has held up remarkably well considering that I'm very harsh on my equipment. Tonewise it can very allot depending on your choice of tubes which I highly reccomend replacing asap since the stock ones are bollocks. I find it sounds very AC-30ish with a EL-34 and a bit more like a small fender combo with more sag and crunch using 6l6 type tubes. It can get decently loud however the stock blue marvel breaks up really nasty at high volumes so try to keep it under 7 or use an extension cab for best results. It has a very practical set of features that go along way towards making my life easier the direct out and power sponge are priceless in a live praise band setting. My only big complaint is the that the amps front end breaks up way to quick however replacing the ECC-83 in the preamp section with 12AU7's helped to get a cleaner sound. Overall a good buy but if your willing to sink some more bucks on an upgraded speaker and tubes you'll really get your moneys worth

      Just what I wanted.

Comments about Peavey Windsor Studio 20W 1x12 Tube Combo Amp:

I had a Carvin Vintage amp that crapped out on me due to bad parts (thanks Carvin for doing nothing to help). Anyway, the Carvin sounded great and had a line out for recording. I knew exactly what features I wanted in my next amp. Tube (1 power tube if possible), Low Wattage, some kind of line out for recording, effects loop and could handle pedals. I was leaning toward a BlackHeart stack even though it didn't meet all of my requirements when I found this. It had everything I wanted and more, like it will take any power tube you can throw at it, it has a power soak so it can be overdriven at low volumes, and as silly as this sounds, the effects loop is on the front panel, so if my amp is near a wall I don't have to worry about the cords from the effects loop. I think this amp sounds great, I know a lot of people complain about the lack of low end and I get it, but it's not like there isn't any low end at all it's just not ALL low end like so many players seem to be searching for and I can throw an EQ pedal in front and get more if I need it. In a band setting the low end is not missed and when recording you don't want to take up all the low end with the guitar. The reverb is just ok, I'm considering buying a holy grail or something and trying it instead. I'll admit, it breaks up at a lower volume than I like but it's not a huge concern because I mainly record and so it doesn't have to be extremely loud to record. I have switched the power tube before to a 6L6 but liked the sound of the EL84 better, BUT since it can take any tube I will try others! Any way I just felt the need to speak up because of some of the reviews on here. The title says it all, STUDIO, if you record a lot (like I do) this amp is perfect, for jamming with friends this amp is great, for playing at the local club, you can do it but would probably want to use something else if you have it.

Comments about Peavey Windsor Studio 20W 1x12 Tube Combo Amp:

I was looking for a tube amp but did not want what everyone else had.I wanted to be different. I liked all the features this amp had and I read all the reviews and whatched all the youtube vids.Despite all the negative reviews, I went for it. I must say, I was dissapointed at first but now that I've had this for about a year now, I'm really digging this amp.It really does cut through the mix with drums and bass.I did swap the EL34 to a 6L6 tube and thats all I've done.Believe me , I really hated this amp at first but it took a while and now I have some thing a little different than every one else and I like it

Comments about Peavey Windsor Studio 20W 1x12 Tube Combo Amp:

I have had a very bad experience with this amp. It worked fine right out of the box and was mostly happy with the tone (this is a surprisingly gainy amp compared to what is traditionally considered class-A tone) and features but mine was not functioning properly after a month of light use. Judging from the symptoms, I believe it needs a new output transformer = not cheap to fix.For what its worth, when it was working, I liked it much better as a head into a different cabinet as I found stock speaker/cab combo was lacking. A gainy amp like this sounds better with a sealed speaker cab in my opinion. This also helped with the low end that still seems largely absent until you really crank it.

      Great, but limited

      By Peter-lVVkm

Comments about Peavey Windsor Studio 20W 1x12 Tube Combo Amp:

I have been using this amp professionally for about seven months. while I find for certain uses it is just great - and the power-soak feature is a real plus - I wish it actually had a clean sound. Unfortunately, what passes for a clean sound in the Windsor is pretty dirty. To suggest that this amp will "end your search for Brit tone" seriously neglects the fact that while it is superior distorted, that Brit jangle just plain isnt there. In the Windsor's favor, like most Peavey products, it is beautifully crafted, and the level of workmanship is very high. It is reliable, consistent, and useful within its limitations.

Comments about Peavey Windsor Studio 20W 1x12 Tube Combo Amp:

Every time I went into my local gear shop for the past 6 months, I saw this poor guy just sitting there collecting dust. A week ago I had some time to kill so I plugged in and started exploring, trying to figure out why nobody had bought this low price tube amp yet. Two hours later, I decided I could not live without owning this amp. Mind you, this amp isn't really a plug and play box; you have to spend some time finding your sweet spots, but boy are there a lot of them to find! Handles my pedals (Boss super chorus and phase shifter) just fine, and the responsiveness and clarity of this amp continue to amaze me every time I play. Construction is decent other than the back board, very flimsy. Haven't played around with the boost function much yet but when I did it seemed to yank the mids way way out front.

      Couldn't Wait Forever...

Comments about Peavey Windsor Studio 20W 1x12 Tube Combo Amp:

I love everything about this amp for youtube and the many reviews I've read.Unfortunately, I couldn't wait forever so I changed my order to a discontinued JSX Mini Colossal which I just love.I'm sure that the Windsor Studio sounds just as good but the backorder was at least 3 months. I ordered before Thankgiving and now Feb 1st they are still on backorder. I don't know what's taking Peavey so long to build these things, but with a bunch of rush orders I didn't want to take a chance on quality assurance.I'm very happing with the Mini Colossal which has many of the same features for recording purposes.
