OVERVIEW

A streamlined pedal with outstanding compression and germanium distortion that adds texture and flavor to your tone.

Pigtronix Philosopher's Rock is a streamlined version of the award-winning Philosopher's Tone pedal. The Philosopher's Rock features Pigtronix's unique optical circuit that provides transparent compression with endless clean sustain. This all analog, state-of-the-art dynamics processor is further augmented by a harmonic germanium distortion that can be added via toggle switch for even more over-the-top tones that will instantly melt faces when engaged.

Although the Philosopher's Rock has fewer controls than its more knobby siblings, it actually sports a 4 times wider range of compression tones on tap. This allows the Philosopher's Rock to be used as a more subtle, clean compressor as well as a super squashy sustain machine when maxed out. The Philosopher's Rock can be used to tame peaks in your signal as well as to create natural acoustic feedback with or without distortion. Super low noise performance allows the Philosopher's Rock to be effective in front of a dirty amp or combined with high gain distortion and fuzz pedals for crafting your personal wall of sound.

The Treble and Blend functions from the original Philosopher's Tone have been preset to the "sweet spot" for hassle free operation on stage or in the studio. The Philosopher's Rock features true bypass switching and runs fine on standard 9-volt (negative tip) power but ships with an 18-volt adapter for superior headroom, clarity and overall output.

Comments about Pigtronix Philosopher's Rock Compressor & Sustainer with Germanium Distortion:

I had never had a compressor pedal before this one. It's almost a dessert island pedal for me because it can be used for acoustic and electric. The Rock Compressor adds infinite clean sustain and/or germanium distortion. The distortion is refined and smooth. It's not a metal pedal but can get pretty rowdy. I'm surprised to read that someone found it noisy. This is one pedal that for me does not need a noise limiter pedal behind it. The quality and feel is top notch and the ability to use a standard 9V power supply or it's supplied 18V power supply is a benefit. I was not familiar with Pigtronix but after this pedal I consider the brand to be professional quality. It's a very usable pedal and can add quite a bit of gain.

Comments about Pigtronix Philosopher's Rock Compressor & Sustainer with Germanium Distortion:

I am not impressed with this pedal. The distortion effect is minimal when the pedal is in the grit mode, and there is a lot of noise from the pedal produced by changing positions on the guitar's toggle switch. This pedal was advertised that it is very quiet. I did not find this to be true at all! I am playing through a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe amp, with a variation of guitars: Fender Lone Star Stratocaster, Fender 60th Anniversary Stratocaster, 1976 Gibson ES335 special with humbuckins, Gibson SG with humbuckins, etc., and I have always been able to get a long sustained note or chord without the use of a pedal enhancement. I do not hear much difference at all sustaining a note or chord with this pedal. I get a definite noise, or humming sound from the pedal; and I have tried using the pedal's volume control lowered and trimming back on the grit/sustain control to reduce or eliminate the hum, feedback, and noise from this pedal with little success. I think this pedal creates more problems than it solves. There is less noise when the pedal's toggle switch is not on "grit"; but the pedal produces nothing in this position. I do not get a sustained note/chord effect that is better than what I can produce without this pedal. When I click the toggle switch engaging the "grit" effect, the noise, hum, and feedback comes on and I have not been able to eliminate this annoying noise.

This is a very cool pedal for leaving it on all the time. Great for slide work as well. Quite for a compressor and sounds good!
