This is a great pedal provided you use it correctly. Like basically all distortion pedals, it does not function well at all unless you balance the distortion on the Turbo Rat with a little gain on the overdrive channel on the amp. It does not work well over the clean channel, but with a perfect blend of small amounts of tube overdrive as a foundation, the Turbo Rat sounds great. The gain on the rat is way more than you really ever need, which is the way it should be. Past 12 o'clock, the gain on the Rat has a lot in common with the modern high gain sound -- thick with a lot of beefy low end. Set at lower volumes, the pedal pushes a ton of high end and the filter is very useful for keeping the highs in control. The volume of this pedal is extreme! Even when I want a large boost in volume from dirty/clean to heavy distortion with the rat I never have turned the rat volume above 11. Anyway, this pedal will not do it all, but it is simple, straight to the point, and solid. It's great for that extra overdrive boost for particularly heavy songs or for lead parts. At lower settings it works pretty well to get a medium gain sound, but not as well as some other pedals. As a side note, the Hot Cake pedal is a great pedal to lay as a foundation for the Rat. The hot cake basically boosts the tube overdrive of the amp, giving you a great medium to light distortion sound. Putting the Rat after the Hot Cake will give you an excellent and extremely versatile tone that combines the responsiveness of the hot cake driving the tubes and the sheer power of the turbo rat.

I play this through a Gibson LP into a Vox, and it is a unique addition to my pedal collection. The controls are responsive, and it sounds fine. No complaints there. It's just noisy as all get-out.

Comments about Pro Co TurboRAT Pedal:

built very solid, compact *but* after six week i returned it. Sound is harsh through fender 30, egnater rebel 20, and emery super baby. Liked it only 20% of the time. Good for punk style maybe.

Versatile distortion

Comments about Pro Co TurboRAT Pedal:

This was the first pedal I bought when I was a kid, and when that was stolen 10 years later, I bought another one. I've got other distortion pedals, but the TurboRAT has always served me well. It's a meatier sounding distortion that does well when cranked or dialed back and with the filter turned up. I use it on anything from a hard rock gig to my jazz/funk trio and more, and am always crouching to dial up different tones for different songs. Maybe I need a few more of these...

Comments about Pro Co TurboRAT Pedal:

i purchased this after owning a metal zone, ds-1, and grunge pedal, and i was sort of looking for a metal zone type pedal. this is certainly no metal pedal however it blows every other pedal ive ever owned away. now as the previous review stated, it sounds weak and terrible through the loop on tube amps. it is amazing before the amp. i do use a soldano reverb-o-sonic so i definately have different sound but it is a stunning pedal. buy it...really.

Comments about Pro Co TurboRAT Pedal:

As I just realized today, this pedal sounds TERRIBLE (to my ears at least), in the effects loop of my amp. However, infront of the amp, when it pushes to tubes, it sounds amazing. So please, before you give it terrible reviews, at least play infront of a tube amp. Odds are it won't sound good on a solid-state.

One of a Line of the Best Distorion Pedals Ever.

Comments about Pro Co TurboRAT Pedal:

This pedal is amazing. I picked up my guitar tonight after a few weeks of not playing, and I fiddled around with the distortion and filter knobs again, just trying to see what new sounds I could get from it. This is a very dynamic pedal. You can get sparkling clean tones if you roll off the distortion completely, or you can get a good, gritty dirty tone with just the slightest amount of it. Me, I play this into a Fender Hot Rod DeVille 410, with the distortion about a third of the way up and the filter facing the direct opposite direction, and it sounds like a vintage tube overdrive. The tone I get from it is lush and warm. I rarely use this thing fully open, but when I do, I can get some super crunchy sounds. If you tweak it just right, I imagine you could get this pedal to sound like an overdriven vintage Marshall. It is worth every penny. It's built like a tank, and it doesn't eat batteries. This is probably the best cash I have ever spent and it is one of a line of the best distortion pedals ever made.

O.K.

Comments about Pro Co TurboRAT Pedal:

The sound of this pedal is good, but not as good as the normal ProCo Rat, and ESPECIALLY not as good as the vintage ProCo Rat or the Vintage Reissue Rat(same exact sound, just not actually vintage). I own a vintage rat and love it. The low end thump is amazing, which leads me to the problem I have with this pedal. There is no real low end thump. It's not the same Rat sound that Dave Grohl gets or various 80's hair metal bands had. Good pedal, just not as good as it's "parents."

Yeah she sounds like a rat.

Comments about Pro Co TurboRAT Pedal:

First I was like ... uh, that's not what I was thinking, less juice that I expected you know but you have to learn how she works and she's gonna be your first choice, maybe your second choice for a main distortion. I own a MetalMuff for the sludgy/metal parts and yeah I can play with both of them, great dual choice versatile stuff, anyway I'm gonna buy a ds-1 for completing my distortion departement. Classic way to go. Trust the TURBO RAT is a great DEVICE.
