This is a great pedal provided you use it correctly. Like basically all distortion pedals, it does not function well at all unless you balance the distortion on the Turbo Rat with a little gain on the overdrive channel on the amp. It does not work well over the clean channel, but with a perfect blend of small amounts of tube overdrive as a foundation, the Turbo Rat sounds great. The gain on the rat is way more than you really ever need, which is the way it should be. Past 12 o'clock, the gain on the Rat has a lot in common with the modern high gain sound -- thick with a lot of beefy low end. Set at lower volumes, the pedal pushes a ton of high end and the filter is very useful for keeping the highs in control. The volume of this pedal is extreme! Even when I want a large boost in volume from dirty/clean to heavy distortion with the rat I never have turned the rat volume above 11. Anyway, this pedal will not do it all, but it is simple, straight to the point, and solid. It's great for that extra overdrive boost for particularly heavy songs or for lead parts. At lower settings it works pretty well to get a medium gain sound, but not as well as some other pedals. As a side note, the Hot Cake pedal is a great pedal to lay as a foundation for the Rat. The hot cake basically boosts the tube overdrive of the amp, giving you a great medium to light distortion sound. Putting the Rat after the Hot Cake will give you an excellent and extremely versatile tone that combines the responsiveness of the hot cake driving the tubes and the sheer power of the turbo rat.

I play this through a Gibson LP into a Vox, and it is a unique addition to my pedal collection. The controls are responsive, and it sounds fine. No complaints there. It's just noisy as all get-out.

Comments about Pro Co TurboRAT Pedal:

I'm a distortion pedal nut. I own a Boss Blues Driver and a Marshall Gov'nor II now. I bought the Turbo Rat primarily because I'm a Jeff Beck fanatic. I run this through a Fender Blues DeVille and a Fender Strat. With a Strat it's hard to find a good distortion pedal that will give you the Humbucker range when you need it. I found that with the Rat and it's filter range this is an excellent pedal for anyone who needs a quick fix switching to a Humbucker sound. Can't beat it!. Good job Pro Co.

Great Pedal

Comments about Pro Co TurboRAT Pedal:

I bought this pedal 12 years ago when I was a kid playing in a garage band and used it all the way up until my pedal board got stolen last summer. I play mostly funk and jazz, and tone is everything. I hardly use pedals, but when I need something, this guy does the trick. I'm buying another one as soon as my insurance check comes in.

Comments about Pro Co TurboRAT Pedal:

The sound of this pedal is good, but not as good as the normal ProCo Rat, and ESPECIALLY not as good as the vintage ProCo Rat or the Vintage Reissue Rat(same exact sound, just not actually vintage). I own a vintage rat and love it. The low end thump is amazing, which leads me to the problem I have with this pedal. There is no real low end thump. It's not the same Rat sound that Dave Grohl gets or various 80's hair metal bands had. Good pedal, just not as good as it's "parents."

Comments about Pro Co TurboRAT Pedal:

i purchased this after owning a metal zone, ds-1, and grunge pedal, and i was sort of looking for a metal zone type pedal. this is certainly no metal pedal however it blows every other pedal ive ever owned away. now as the previous review stated, it sounds weak and terrible through the loop on tube amps. it is amazing before the amp. i do use a soldano reverb-o-sonic so i definately have different sound but it is a stunning pedal. buy it...really.

Comments about Pro Co TurboRAT Pedal:

I am sad that I lost my TurboRAT. But I'm gonna buy a new one right away. It's my standby for soloing -- provides an excellent volume boost with a great cutting tone. And when you crank the distortion all the way to the right, you can actually hear the signal breaking apart. Just plain nasty! I love it! Love it! Love it!

Very good distortion pedal

By Anonymous

Comments about Pro Co TurboRAT Pedal:

Very good pedal. I do get some noise when playing but it's because i have a crappy amp. Very versatile. Easy to use. I recommend it for alternative rock, grunge, not so much for metal but it probably can get a metal sound if you tweak it long enough. And its rock hard casing almost broke my foot so i don't think i'll worry about it breaking.

Comments about Pro Co TurboRAT Pedal:

As I just realized today, this pedal sounds TERRIBLE (to my ears at least), in the effects loop of my amp. However, infront of the amp, when it pushes to tubes, it sounds amazing. So please, before you give it terrible reviews, at least play infront of a tube amp. Odds are it won't sound good on a solid-state.

Comments about Pro Co TurboRAT Pedal:

I own a Turbo Rat and a Big Muff. The Turbo Rat is my pick of the two. I find it to be a more dynamic pedal for chords/strumming, less muddy. I usually leave the knobs right around 12 O'Clock and it rocks me right.Built like a tank also. Recommended.

Comments about Pro Co TurboRAT Pedal:

I bought it, because I needed a versatile effect box ("grunge"-Pearl Jam to Alice in Chains). And I must admit it was hard at first. A slight turn can change sound! But now, I love it! Previously own BOSS DS-1 and Zoom 505- TurboRAT beats them bigtime!

the only distortion i need

By tunnlvision

from Boston

Comments about Pro Co TurboRAT Pedal:

I play in a hard indie progressive rock band and have owned the turbo rat ever since I knew johnny greenwood from radiohead used it in his rig in the late 90's. I had heard the original rat before, but never the turbo, and once I brought it home (I never even tried it out) the sonic possibilities with this box are incredible. I own a boss gt-3 multi-effects processor and a roland jazz chorus JC-120, and never used the distortion in the gt3, or the JC-120 since its horrible...but not the reason you get a JC-120. I used the fx loop in the GT-3 to route the turborat....never one of the 12 available distortions that never came close. I now dont even use my gt3, I use a turborat, routed to a wah, going directly into my JC-120. Almost every gig people come up to me and ask how I get my sound. Now you know.

One of a Line of the Best Distorion Pedals Ever.

By OutLoudHeyHey

Comments about Pro Co TurboRAT Pedal:

This pedal is amazing. I picked up my guitar tonight after a few weeks of not playing, and I fiddled around with the distortion and filter knobs again, just trying to see what new sounds I could get from it. This is a very dynamic pedal. You can get sparkling clean tones if you roll off the distortion completely, or you can get a good, gritty dirty tone with just the slightest amount of it. Me, I play this into a Fender Hot Rod DeVille 410, with the distortion about a third of the way up and the filter facing the direct opposite direction, and it sounds like a vintage tube overdrive. The tone I get from it is lush and warm. I rarely use this thing fully open, but when I do, I can get some super crunchy sounds. If you tweak it just right, I imagine you could get this pedal to sound like an overdriven vintage Marshall. It is worth every penny. It's built like a tank, and it doesn't eat batteries. This is probably the best cash I have ever spent and it is one of a line of the best distortion pedals ever made.

This pedal screams

By Gordo-EzGCH

from Fresno, CA

Comments about Pro Co TurboRAT Pedal:

I got this pedal a few weeks ago and it is amazing. It has more gain than any distortion pedal that I can think of and obscenely high output as well as well. With the volume set at about half way up, it boosts the signal a lot and with it up all the way you can get some really sick sounds if you use it to overdrive your tube amp if you have one. I don't like the way it sounds at lower gain settings, but that's not what I bought it for anyway, I wanted something that would give me some massive sounding distortion for rhythym and leads and this pedal totally exceeded my expectations.
