The semi parametric mid band on the eq affords a tremendous amount of flexibility in tone shaping. Using the 'volume' control on the clean channel allows you to dial in a variety of different clean sounds. If you keep it low, this amp works quite well for amplifying acoustic guitars. Cranking up the volume brings a wetter, fender like clean tone. Naturally, you can dial in anything in between. The distortion channel is great and just as flexible. If you mess with the gain and eq, you can achieve classic overdrive sounds as well as fairly high gain metal sounds. The sustain is great. It also cleans up well when you roll down the volume knob on your guitar. Putting a tube screamer in front of this channel can easily push this amp into monstrous, violent, grindcore territory similar to the old Ampeg SS and VH series amps, but with more sustain and tonal flexibility. The reverb is a bit odd, but useful. It seems to have a lot of early reflections with a short decay. I pretty much leave it on ~2 and feel it helps thicken the sounds I get out of both channels. It also serves to add more depth to the chorus. The chorus itself is decent. It's noisy, and a little quiet, but fun to play with nonetheless. Taking the price into consideration, then I feel that a '10' is warranted here.
Two channels, 3 band eq with semi parametric mid band, reverb, chorus and 40 watts into two 8"' speakers. What's not to like?
This is a solid little amp. The construction is rugged and well though out. The tolex work is excelent, considering the price, There are two sharp corners near the controls that could be a little cleaner, but they're not sloppy by any stretch of the imagination. I have not fully put the speakers on this through their paces yet, as I am only using this for low volume practice, but they sound suprisingly good at low levels. However, I have no idea how well they hold up when the amp is cranked.
This little guy is a great deal at the normal asking price. It's a no brainer at any sale price.

I have to give this amp a "middle of the road" overall score because the reverb and chorus is, in my opinion, simply terrible. The 'verb is very tinny sounding and the tail breaks up at the end of the decay. Activating the chorus feature introduces a fair amount of noise. The chorus itself is not a bad sounding effect, but the fact that noise is added when in use knocks some points off the score.
On the other hand, I think the "distortion" channel is very effective. I don't get the tone I find with my Deluxe Reissue and a Tube Screamer, but I still like what the Rogue has to offer. The sweepable mid-frequency control in the EQ is a real nice feature. Nearly infinite tonal possibilities are at my disposal with this knob.
I played both single coil guitars and guitars with humbuckers through the Rogue SC40R to mutually satisfying results. I especially liked the sound of running the humbuckers through the distortion channel. Running the single coils of my luthier built Tele through the clean channel was also nice.
One quirk I noticed which I think is worth mentioning... I was having a hard time getting a clear signal in the clean channel. I spent a fair amount of time playing around with the controls because I couldn't get rid of the faint buzzing sound. At first I was worried that is was speaker buzz, despite the fact that I "broke in" the speakers for 24 hours while running an mp3 player at low to medium volumes... turns out I was experiencing channel bleed, as I had the distortion channel gain up all the way while playing through the clean channel. Turning down the gain in the distortion channel gave me a clean, clear sound out of the other channel. Go figure. Easy remedy, but is not desirable if you plan on switching channels in mid-song while wanting a heavy crunch AND a super clean sound available.
Overall (as this category is called) I am quite pleased with the purchase. It won't be my go-to amp, and honestly, I probably wouldn't have bought it if it didn't jump out at me off the Stupid Deals of the Week page, but it is what it is... a feature packed combo amp at a decent price. I would recommend this amp to a beginner guitarist or to an experienced guitarist wanting an inexpensive backup or practice amp, especially so if it is offered again at the "stupid deal" price.
As a 2x8, 2 channel combo amp with 'verb, chorus, and 3-band EQ with a sweepable mid, I'd say the Rogue SC40R is PACKED with features for the price. Channel switching and chorus on/off is possible with an optional footswitch, which is handy.
Build quality on the Rogue SC40R seems nice, though I worry about the lengivity of the pcb mounted mp3 and headphone jacks. The input and footswitch jacks are chassis mounted, as are all the rotary pots, so there should be no worries there. Aesthetically, I think it is an attractive amp with the top mounted controls giving the front a clutter free look. It feels solid, but I haven't gigged with it to see how it holds up to the gigging lifestyle.
I purchased this amp when it showed up under the stupid deals of the week. I figured I couldn't go wrong paying this much for a combo amp. I also own a Fender Deluxe Reverb Reissue, a Vox AC4TV and an old Ampeg Mercury amp, so with that said, this Rogue is my only solid state amp, which makes for a nice backup should any or all of my tube amps start to act up. The SC40R is a stupendous deal at the price and probably worth the regular price.

Comments about Rogue SC40R 40W 2x8 Stereo Chorus Guitar Combo Amp:
What a waste of time and money this thing is. Clean channel is weak no "character" whatsoever, dirty channel is borderline usable, reverb is weak almost non-existent, you need to crank it all the way up and even then it's barely audible, chorus is the worst sounding chorus I have ever heard (let alone attempted to play with) in my 30 years of guitar playing. This amp is terrible, a piece of authentic junk, do not waste your time or money as I -foolishly- did, Musician's Friend you should have a policy for returning/exchanging items that are SO BAD, why do I have to pay for the shipping back cost? I am very dissapointed...

Comments about Rogue SC40R 40W 2x8 Stereo Chorus Guitar Combo Amp:
This amp is decent quality and has an o.k. sound for the price I paid for it. I think if I would have paid more than that I might have expected a bit more. Mainly, when you have an external audio line plugged in, there is a lot of hiss or background noise, which I really don't like. It does have good sound overall, just not with the external audio line plugged in.

Comments about Rogue SC40R 40W 2x8 Stereo Chorus Guitar Combo Amp:
This is a versatile little amp that has a big sound that belies its small size. Granted it is obviously not a Marshall stack but it still can kick out a big sound, especially at acoustic gigs in small to medium clubs. The parametric EQ is a godsend and the chorus adds a nice fullness. Try an electric violin through the distortion channel -we used this on "Watchtower" - like Jon Luc-Ponty playing Hendrix -very cool -audience loved it.

Comments about Rogue SC40R 40W 2x8 Stereo Chorus Guitar Combo Amp:
I have to admit that I bought this because of the price. I took it to our next rehearsal and I was impressed with the output. My bandmates thought it was very cool, small portable and sounded pretty good. One of my mates said "you should have bought two and sold one for twice the price". The reverb is a bit weak and the chourus is too but for the price I am VERY happy with the amp.

I was tired of lugging around my Peavy Bandit, I bought my first Rogue and have really enjoyed it, I bought another one to keep at home while I leave the 1st one at church.
Great sound, stereo chorus at a great price.
