The Lava Box is not an ordinary MOSFET distortion/overdrive effect pedal. It actually reacts more like a great amp than a stompbox with the depth and dynamics that give well-made amps character.
When you think about the tones that defined so many of the true guitar heroes throughout history, they all really speak. They cut through. They say something. The Lava Box brings that magic back with its broad array of midrange timbres and its amazing sensitivity to picking intensity and volume changes. One of coolest features is the six-position Rumble bass roll-off control. This rotary knob changes the sonic character of the Lava Box pedal's distortion for a huge range of tones, from bright and spanky to deep and warm. This is a very soild, well made pedal featuring high quality parts and true bypass switching. As claimed, it does clean up well when you turn down your guitar's volume or use a lighter touch. The Rumble switch is effective when switching between humbuckers and single coils. Positions 3-6 really beef up the tone of Tele's and Strat's. I only wish it had an additional tone control to roll off some of the high frequencies at louder volumes. Of course, you can do this with your amp or guitar, too. Still, this would be a nice feature and would make it a 5 star pedal in my book. My favorite use for this pedal is to use it in front of an amp that has a clean to moderately overdriven tone. I max out the gain for thick, sustain-filled leads and then roll the volume back on my guitar to get a nice tubescreamer-esque grind for rhythm. Musically, it covers a lot of ground.

I want to talk about the sound of the pedal here. When I got it I was expecting a distortion that had an overdriven tube character, from the description in the Seymour Duncan site and ads for the pedal. The pedal does clean up well with a lighter touch, as described in the ads, but its tone is that of a solid state 60's fuzz. Play a double stop and you will hear that dissonant 60's fuzz hash. Play the riff to Purple Haze through it and you'll hear a sound more reminiscent of a Fuzz Face than a tube overdrive/distortion.
This pedal is great if you play old Cream, Hendrix, or maybe newer alternative rock where a hippy-trippy fuzz tone is called for. I guess there's the reason it's called the Lava Box.
Adjustable gain, plenty of available level, and some tone options. Simple but effective.
Built like a tank.

i love this pedal! i can get a great brian may rock sound. and with a little teak of the guitar knobs it cleans up and sounds very beck. after about a week i was shaping some really unique and original distortions. 1 complaint, the knobs are bulky and when you are in a hurry sometimes your foot hits them and changes the settings.

I was really thinking that this pedal would be a sweet deal but I was sadly disappointed when I tried it out. The main reason I don't like it is because there is now way to change the high frequency characteristics. You can add or subtract bass just fine but there's not knob to roll back to highs so you always have this overly bright (in my opinion) tone overall. If you want a nice warm tone from this you better make sure you have some very warm pickups in your guitar.

This is not a very good distortion pedal. The rumble switch has six EQ pre-sets that most significantly affect the bass. The purpose of this switch is to make the pedal sound good with a variety of different guitars; this goal is not quite accomplished. The "rumble" could be renamed "mud" to more accurately represent the outcome of the feature. This pedal lacks clarity, and it is not very musical. Chords and solos alike sound stifled, buzzy, and muddy all at the same time. Steer clear of this - you're better off with q different pedal. I have a BBE Crusher, which I feel is a superior pedal. It has the same sort of gain levels, but with a good three-band EQ. It's also cheaper.

You really get a lot of bang for your buck with this pedal. Right out of the box I cranked up the gain and used the "rumble" dial to dial in my sound. You'd be amazed at the amount of screaming sustain you get when playing leads through this stomp box. Change the dial and you get some really crunchy distortion sounds. This unit makes it sound like I'm playing through a classic tube amp with the sound cranked up to 11! Another nice feature about this pedal is that it works great with guitars with single coil pick ups. I've played with overdrive units before that only sound good with humbucker pickups. Not the case here.
