OVERVIEW

Tons of power with a feature set that leaves little to be desired.

The BH500 bass amp head is the latest addition to TC Electronic's Bass Amp 2.0 lineup! Combined with the BC cabs of your choice, it stacks up to become any rig you need for small bar gigs, indoor rock clubs, outdoor stadium concerts—you name it!

The BH500 boasts razor-sharp tone-shaping tools like TubeTone™ emulator for tube-like sound and response, SpectraComp™ compression, and bass-tuned tone controls. Also, its three user memories let you change your tone at any given time. An integrated tuner lets you tune up in silence before you rock.

SpectraComp™
A conventional compressor is often dominated by the lower string, but with SpectraComp you get per-string multi-band compression that evens out across all strings. You get an even, rock-solid tone that cuts through any mix whether you play fingerstyle, with a heavy pick, or slap the strings hard.

TubeTone™
The TubeTone™ effect was originally introduced on RH450. Most transistor designs try to replicate tube sound using one small preamp tube, but why not take the crucial characteristics of a full preamp and power amp into account? Both are essential to the sound when you want that classic tube warmth as well as when you go for a full-on overdriven rock sound with a massive punch!

Presets
BH500 can store three of your favorite tones. For instance, if you need a nice chunk of overdrive on specific passages, presets are king. Not to mention, with great sounding bass tones and seamless switching between them, you will be able to focus on the important thing, rocking out!

Built-in bass tuner
Every once in a while you need to tune up, and whenever that happens, just let the built-in tuner guide you. It's simple, it lets you tune silently, and it gets you back to rocking in no time.

Tone Controls and TweeterTone
EQ is always a bass essential, so the BH500 is equipped with a great-sounding 4-band EQ which is perfect for shaping your fundamental tone. Further, with two contour filters you can scoop the mid frequencies, which creates an amazing low-end punch on demand.

The tweeter control is usually located on the rear of the cabinet, but on the BH500 you can conveniently adjust the tweeter level right from the front panel. Further, the sound also gets modified slightly with filters giving you a much more intelligent control over the high frequencies that are critical for giving your sound that razor-sharp edge.

Connections
For rehearsing or jamming, you can connect your portable music player to the front-panel aux input. If you don't want to disturb the neighbors, plug in your headphones and the drivers will be muted automatically. Finally, you can send a signal to a sound engineer via the balanced XLR output (also on the front panel), or to an audio interface when you are recording.

FEATURES
  • 500W
  • 4-band tone controls
  • TubeTone™ tube emulation
  • SpectraComp™ per-string compression
  • Front-panel tweeter level control, balanced XLR out, and RCA aux in
  • 3 user preset slots

Comments about TC Electronic BH500 500W Bass Amp Head:

A very good amp and unbelievably great value at the sale price. It has an excellent onboard compressor, memory settings to store different dialed-in tones, and a good EQ section. The tube emulation provides some grit, but that is not a sound that I need, and I'm not sure how good it is. Better for somebody else to comment on that one. My only gripes are the weight of 27lbs, The presence of only one speaker output, and a gain knob that at least for my active bass seems to be a little hard to dial-in. It's not really that. It's more that the amp is not as loud as one might expect, which could be overcome by higher gain settings, but anything above three or four begins to distort. I directly compared it to my GK MB500II (which is the older model) and although they sound a little bit different, they are comparable enough if dialed in correctly. Overall, I'm extremely pleased with the purchase.

Comments about TC Electronic BH500 500W Bass Amp Head:

After a few months playing with this thing, which i bought as an upgrade for my Acoustic bh200 amp head. i am in awe... with reservations... i really like the tube tone and tweeter tone features. at first i was using a 15 inch passive sub and a peavey twin 10 bass cabinet. sounded pretty good, didnt really experiment with the sound too much. i have since switched out the sub with a 15 inch bass cabinet. both had great low end and high end, but the bass cabinet combination seemed to lack a lot of the mids. after adjusting, experimenting with the compression, eq, etc its pretty good now.. but not perfect. As this can handle 3 tc bass cabs rated at 8 ohms, i am pondering if the spec is brand specific as i think adding a yamaha a15 p.a. cabinet would blow out windows ! wondering if you can actually only use tc electronics brand cabinets for a 3 cabinet set up ? i will be experimenting... 1st, using the peavey twin 10 bass cab with the a15 yamaha, then the 15 inch bass cab with the yamaha a15. and of course will try the 15 inch sub with the yamaha a15, possibly add the peavey as a 3rd cabinet.....So really, i think this is about finding the right cabinets to match this beauty. it has a lot of punch, clean, lots of features. Wish i had a ric stereo bass so i could run it thru both the tc and acoustic head in stereo.

Comments about TC Electronic BH500 500W Bass Amp Head:

Overall, this is an excellent amp with a bright and clear output, a nice compressor, good eq controls, plenty of headroom for its power rating (500 watt model reviewed). It sounds very clean to my ears, and was exceptional at modelling a nice tone out of an accoustic bass with a built in piezzo pickup and not generating feedback. I played with this model using 2 four string basses, fender and yamaha, a 5 string frettless, and two fretless accoustics.. It handles the b strings with a nice touch via compression levels, rounding out string volume nicely. My complaints are few but fine.,
        1. Speakon cables only, 8 ohm max
        2. Lacks the 'sweet spot' characteristic of an ampeg or similar design. Some players a/o engineers may like this complaint,as this amp produces a very clean and clear projection, and tube emulation is nice. By sweet spot, I'm discussing a very particular and subjective quality, that sugar for tone converter found in ampeg, gk, and certain hartke and fender models..
Overall, this amp is outstanding for its class and price..

Plenty of power, great sound and tone capabilities. The three preset options for when you dial in a sound you want to save is a great feature. Built in tuner, compressor, tweeter tone, and tube tone.... an all around great amp at a price that makes it the best all around value that I've found.

I bought this amp for features such as the simple built-in tuner as well as the tone possibilities. Its price made it a good value. When I plugged it in to my Hartke 115XL cabinet, I found that I also got a lot of power. It gets loud without turning it up that much, and it sounds great.

Comments about TC Electronic BH500 500W Bass Amp Head:

The sound, the multi-band compression, the built in tuner, the "tube" tone, the tweeter tweaker: all great features, especially if you have TC cabinets (I have the BH 410 and 212). It's plenty loud: if you need MORE volume, well, the XLR direct out should go to a big PA with subs, etc. It looks cool in RED.

The downside for me is its weight: 24 pounds. Many other Class D solid state bass amps weigh in a 4 to 10 pounds, so I'm not sure why this one is so heavy. The Ampeg PF800, for example, weights in at just under 12 pounds. The MarkBass LittleMark 800 weights just under 7 pounds.

I got the TC because of the matched BH cabs and the 4x10 and 2x12 make a great pair if you need that much air to move; and either alone works well for a smaller venue. The TC features mentioned above and the good price (I got mine as a "restock", and I've seen it on a "stupid deal" for an even better price.

I say, if the wight does not bother you, go for it!

This is a nice, modern bass amp. It's heavy for a solid-state amp, a good thing. It must have a decent transformer or two. The tone controls are very versatile as the memory. The compressor and tuner are handy. There is only one Speakon output (4 ohms or more) and these class-D amps never sound as loud as the specs indicate. I'm using a vintage JBL D-140 on it. It's good for recording or moderate size clubs. It's made in Thailand. - joel

Just purchased this amp head and do not have a speaker cab yet. Took it to a local music shop to test the amp on different cabs. All sounded good but was really impressed with this head in a GK neo 410. Fantastic sound and way more volume than I will ever need. One of the best I've heard and a very reasonable price.

Comments about TC Electronic BH500 500W Bass Amp Head:

The bass player in my band bought this. He is guitar player by trade but has become an excellent bass player, his knowledge of the guitar has helped him expand the role of a bass player beyond hitting a bass note with the kick. He plays excellent Gary Tallent like melodies when the song allows it, sticks in the pocket when needed. The amp choice was due to 3 factors; price, power and portability.

The amp is quite loud, we've had the master on 4 and ten and the tone has been consitent. If you can't afford an SVT head, if you something that is usable in most situations then this should be a consideration. Combine it with a BC410 and you got a gig worthy rig and we've had a dozen shows since June, used this at at least ten of them.

The tone print, tuner and tube modeler knob all add nice touches to the actual sound and flexability of the amp.

One star off for not being an actual tube amp and for being an amp that takes a while to learn, it isn't a simple setup. Learn how the knobs and interface interact and you'll be fine.
