TC Electronics Flashback Delay Looper Pedal

| Review By: Robert Crain | 2 months, 1 week ago

Features:

Plenty of features with this unit.  All of the delays sound great.  My unit did not come with a manual.  I ended up returning the unit back to the store because the looper was such a huge disappointment, the pedal lost its value to me.  The looper completely changed the tone of my guitar for the worse and cut the volume in half.  I didn't like it and no matter how much I fiddled with the controls on my guitar, amp and pedals, I couldn't get it to sound even close to what I wanted.  On the other hand, the pedal had great delay tones.

Quality:

Great quality construction throughout.  No manual included.

Value:

Not a good value for me.  I returned it back to the store and bought something else.

Overall:

I was expecting a simple but usable looper with this delay unit but was so very disappointed.

Features:

This pedal does everything and more. All I wanted it for was to get a reverb sustian going. It acheived that and more. I use the looper to lay down so I can solo over it while I practice. Its not the longest looper in the world thats for sure. They probably shouldnt advertise it as a delay looper more a Delay that has a little looper feature.

Quality:

nothing wrong here.

Value:

awesome. I used the Iphone app the other day to get the BFMV Mike Padget toneprint I was amazed at how easy it was and how cool the sound was.

Overall:

This pedal rocks I can see what it sells out here really quickly.

Take the bad with the good

Features:

True bypass, stereo, audio tapping, dotted rhythms, big delay time, and lots of different modes at your disposal.  The looper is a big letdown, and it's sad that you can't do sound-on-sound oscillation.

Quality:

Haven't used it long enough to really see what the build quality is like.  If you're expecting anything close to the quality of true analog delay, you'll be disappointed by the sound of this pedal.  As digital delays go, it's satisfactory.

Value:

Even with the looping drawback, the Flashback still has an enormous number of features for the price.

Overall:

This is a very, very cool pedal, and I think solely as a delay, the Flashback stands out far beyond it's competitors in this price range.  What's sad is that TC had the opportunity to create something truly amazing, but I think they missed it with a couple of the features.  The looper is a huge disappointment.  40s of loop time is bigger than the DL4 and the EHX Hazarai, both of which cost more than the flashback, but it's looper is incredibly impractical.  There is no way to adjust the loop volume against whatever you're playing over it.  Turn the FX knob down, and EVERYTHING gets quieter (and vice versa).  It's functional, but not versatile at all and way harder to use than it could have been.  The other thing that is kind of a letdown is the inability to do sound-on-sound oscillation.  I don't know anyone who does that very frequently, but nevertheless it's one of the things that can make delay pedals cool.  Overall, this pedal completely outshines most of the other digital delays in it's price range (certainly the DD-7 for a little less), and comes close to the category of things like the DL4, DD-20, and Nova Repeater.  The only things separating it from the more expensive digital delays are the sound quality and the ability to save and load presets.  The Flashback isn't the game changer it could have been, but it's a great delay for the price.

I was struggling to get a good delay for my bass rig.  I had the guy at the local store with every delay they had ready to test.  This one was the clearest and initially easiest to use.  Everything did exactly as I expected.  I didn't try the Looper deal, no interest in that but it has some beautiful clear delays.  It was the best one to my ears for my bass.

TC has really put a lot of thought into their new Tone Print line of pedals. This delay does so much it's almost overkill. I really only use 3 of the delay settings but those 3 sound amazingly warm and transparent. I absolutely love the retro sound of the tape delay and the analog sounds almost as good as the Carbon Copy. I A/B compared the 2 at the music store and while the MXR pedal sounded only marginally better as an analog delay, the TC offers so much more in options and versatility that it wins hands down, not to mention it's cheaper. It's tough, small, sounds beautiful and does many things well. I recommend it strongly.
