Guess who inspired this pedal.
Tech 21's American Woman overdrive pedal celebrates the tone of one of the most recognized guitar solos in the history of rock. It was developed at the suggestion of Randy Bachman after purchasing Tech 21's SansAmp and discovering it contained a preset named in honor of the famed song.
Bachman worked closely with Tech 21 to design a single pedal he could use with any amp. After having captured the sound of an entire chain of Bachman's '59 Les Paul going through amps, mikes, compressors and tape compression in one preset of the SansAmp PSA-1, the electronics had to be reconfigured into an overdrive pedal.
With just the right balance of odd and even harmonics, the American Woman re-creates the cascading effect of 2 different amplifiers, including pre-amp and power amp stages. This effect is typically only achieved by running 2 guitar amplifiers into each other. For versatility, the American Woman pedal can also be cleaned up for semi-dirty and warm blues sounds.

- 1kOhm low impedance 1/4" output (drives long cables without loss of signal integrity)

I experimented with more than a dozen different (must-have) fuzz pedals to use with my Stingray. I like the signal broken up. Not quite a buzzsaw but with teeth...dirty teeth.
The American Woman fuzz nailed it. I can push in as much drive as needed without muudying my tone or turning it too 'industrial'. Used in conjunction with a Diamond Bass Compressor, I now have the tone I've been trying to find for 5 years. I can't recommend this highly enough. I set the gate low as my compressor keeps everything tight. The drive is set at 10'o'clock and tone at 12.
It may not have been designed for use with bass guitar but, by god, it does the job brilliantly. Everyone comments on my tone and I've had more than one person try to buy both pedals off me. It ain't happening!
I've played guitar for a long time and purchased many pedals throughout the years and I will say that this American Woman Overdrive is the best overdrive/distortion pedal I've ever owned. I play it through a SligoVerb 4x10 and the tone is awesome!
I bought this pedal because I've always liked thesmooth mellow sustain of "American Woman". Thispedal is also great for other songs by bands suchas Iron Butterfly,Grand Funk,Strawberry AlarmClock,Jimi Hendrix and Spirit. It's great for a Norman Greenbaum "Spirit In The Sky" sound.
I bought this box and have used it playing in concert. This thing is very awesome sounding. I know there are people who don't like it because of the gate. But, I like the gate. If you want a very rich, creamy, smooth, full sounding sustain and distortion box get this one.
If you are looking for a great distortion pedal to bring you great tone, and incredible crunch for your rhythm then get this pedal. It has about the best tone you can get for the price. All the other pedals fall short of the competion.
