The Double Drive 3X has undergone a Private Stock custom MOD and has been revoiced for more aggressive hard rock and metal tones rather than classic, bluesy-style tones. It features a tighter low end for more chunky low frequency impact and a wider Level taper for smoother control. This custom-modified version offers a more "amp-like" distortion as opposed to a "pedal-like" distortion.
The unique pedal design captures the lush, muscular power amp distortions of both Class A and Class A/B tube amps. The tones can be used individually or you can feed one into the other for massive, cascading distortion and limitless tonal variation. The 100% analog Double Drive 3X is a 3-channel, fully programmable version of its single channel predecessor and features active 3-band EQ. The expanded tone section gives you even greater flexibility to create incredible and original tones. You can store three custom sounds, even on the fly, by simply tweaking the knobs and double-tapping on a footswitch. How easy is that?
DRIVE A controls the amount of Class A power amp output stage distortion (like Vox AC30®-style amp), rich in even harmonics. The amount of harmonics is dynamically controlled by the input level and their ratio by how hard you pick.
DRIVE A/B controls the amount of Class A/B power amp output stage distortion (like Fender®/Marshall®-style amps), rich in odd harmonics.
The signal path of Drive A runs into the signal path of Drive A/B. This results in an electronic multiplication, rather than addition, of the amount of distortion to achieve a powerful cascading effect.

The effect has two amplification modes that it combines to generate the final tone. One is class A and the other is class AB. The class A is fires in the chain and is pushed thru the class AB. This is followed by the classic three tone array with a forth for presents. You can store three presets in the unit that you can call at will the forth is off. The tone is believable and fairly natural sounding until you turn everything to 10. It seems to be built fairly solid.

The pots on this pedal unlock for no apparent reason in the middle of performance. That changes the sound from the one in the memory to the one specified by the current pots positions whatever they happen to be which needless to say could be dramatic. That renders this pedal useless for any kind of serious work on stage or in the studio. It's very annoying for private practice as well.
MF may have sold me a lemon so I will contact Tech 21. I will share that experience too. So far though I am very unhappy because this pedal does offer an amazing sound, it makes my piece of junk practice amp sound like a very expensive tube amp.

Have not had the opportunity to use it yet. I was very dissapointed that there was not a power cord included with the device. That aspect was not clearly noted in the description of the product. Now, I have to hunt for a power cord before I can use the device.

The peadal has some neat options like memory of settings but overall it's propbably like many other such pedals - I bought it because of the Tech 21 name you know Sans amp, etc. it failed to produce a professional sound for me. I only use OD pedals that have a 12AX7 in them and find them to have an obvious advantage in overall sound and response.

I bought this pedal when it was the Stupid Deal for a great price, and once I got it figured out, man, my inner knob tweaker can't calm down. I love the saturation I can get out of this pedal, but I also love how well it cleans up and just boosts my tone.

Ok... where should I start? This thing basicly have replaced my full rack of pedals... I've bought all kinds of pedals and tube screamers etc... about 8 on my rack including ibanez ts9dx, metal pedals from boss etc. Well now I'm selling all of them because I got this wonder (made in usa) and i can dial whatever tone I want, it is just amazing!!!! For years playing music professionally never ever saw a box so versatile, well made, and with all those sound variations. My metal sounds like metal! my punk sounds just like PUNK! my blues and classic rock sound perfect. How I couldn't see this before!!! very pleased and will suggest everyone to buy it and best of all made here in the USA! Support USA products, buy this pedal and burn your rack cause you won't need it again... PERIOD! Only thing I will add to this is a delay effect and that's it!

This is an abslutely amazing pedal. It has a large range of adjustable overdrive. It very sensative to the playing. I have used it with my strat, PRS and you can easy tune it up for blues, rock, classic rock and metal. It could make your amp very loud, so be careful with the volumen countrol :)

This pedal is a great pedal for live performance. It sounds great through tube and solid state. It sounds amazing in front of my mesa boggie tremoverb.
For rhythm distortion I use a blend of both gain stages for some tight heavy distortion. The a/b stage at low gain makes for a nice bluesy overdrive. I have the third channel set up as a lead channel with the same settings as the rhythm channel with a boosted level.
The fact that the settings are programmable and the sounds are analog make this pedal very useful. It takes some tweaking and fine tuning to create some incredible sounds. The video demos I have seen out there do NOT do this pedal justice. It is a mainstay on my pedalboard for sure.

Bought this on Stupid Deal. One of the best pedals I own. Very glad I bought it. Never heard of this thing before. Superior sound to my Blues Driver, Tube Screamers, and several others. The tone is rich and can be dialed-in to near perfection. Metal-type tones, classic rock to Blues. Very sensitive and precise controls. Problem, if any, is that there are so many possible settings and tonal varieties, it is difficult to remember what setting was what, unless you make notes. Quality product.
