The six-watt Special 6 guitar amp head gets its powerful tube sound from one 12AX7 preamp tube and one 6V6 output tube. It boasts a footswitchable Gain Boost feature that significantly expands its range of tones—it's the only amp in its class that excels at both clean and overdriven tones, and it's the only amp in its class to offer a footswitchable boost. With the Gain Boost, players can instantly toggle between clean rhythm tones and overdriven leads, essentially duplicating the footswitchable functions of a 2-channel amp in an all-tube, hand-wired, simple, 2-knob package.
To further expand its range of tones, the Special 6 also features a High/Low power switch that enhances low-volume tones with extra-smooth richness (when in half-power mode). I've had a whole bunch of amps over the years. Marshall, Fender, Gibson, Goldtone, Matchless, Holland, Dr. Z, Ampeg, Acoustic, Sears, Wards, Musicman, Mesa Boogie, Frenzel, you name it. This little amp ranks right up there in tone and build quality with the best of them. A little scary, because now they've figured out how to build boutique type amps on the cheap in China.
The clean is dream and the scream is mean. This amp cooks. I don't really care much for the low power setting. If I want scream I crank it and if I want clean I dial it back. I've never been a fan of low power switches, and still am not.
I've heard people complain of the cheap Chinese tubes. So, I got out my box of tubes and experimented with RCA, Sylvania, GE, Sovtek; I even tried a Mullard 12AU7A that I have. They all sounded pretty good, but I have to say, I like the Chinese tubes. In fact, I'm going to buy a bunch of them to have on hand... I like them that much.
Also, I know this amp is touted as a tweakers dream, but I have no desire to mod anything. It's perfect, as is. Maybe not quite loud enough to play with a drummer, but loud enough for your wife to complain. Probably might get a few complaints if you live in an apartment as well.

I own professional amps to gig with, but i needed an amp for home use, that I could use at low level with an acceptable sound.
This amp is exactly what i needed. Nice warm sound, nice boost, takes pedals very well. I changed the stock amp tube for a jj 6l6: more head room. The amp reacts very well with the guitar volume control. I use it with a 1x12 cab with a Celestion Vintage 30 and a 1x12 Orange. This amp could be used for small venues with the right cab. It will not do metal but a surprising set of vintage sounds without any pedals. Add pedals and you are all set. Nice practice and small venue amp overall, you cannot beat the price for a well constructed hand wired amp. Yes it is made in China but it as good or better than most of low wattage boutique amps made in the USA.

This amp is designed well from a volume point of view. At full power with boost knob out the cops will show up at your house if you abuse it. If you turn it down to half power you can keep most of the tone at a bedroom volume.

I plugged this baby into my 4x12 and was immediately impressed by its quiet operation and wonderful tone. When you pull the volume knob out and kick in the included foot pedal it's like releasing the genie in the bottle.

Beautiful clean sound. Plenty of head room to front end with pedals. In low power mode slammed all the way to 10 it breaks up beautifully without shattering the windows. Great tube tone. The clean may be a little warmer than I was thinking, but I would buy it all over again.
Needs more tone control, but it is built to be simple. The tone knob is very effective, I would just personally like at least low and high knobs.
Very well built. It should last years.
Best value for the money in a hand wired all tube amp head.

Looking for a low wattage amp that sounds great, is built with quality, easy to modify, versatile, good for recording and even live playing? look no further.
True handwired amp, footswitchable boost, two power settings, high and low inputs... for a low powered amp I really couldn't ask for more. The tone knob gives a nice range from bassy to biting and clear, and you can plug this into any cab you want. I chose the vht special 6 open back 1X12 cabinet because of the celestion G12H-30 speaker, which is my favorite. Also, this may only be 6 watts, but on the high power setting this thing is loud enough to jam with other people and even play small gigs, especially if you can mic the amp and run it through the house PA.
Made in china, however... it is a better sounding, and better built amp than the fender champion 600, marshall class 5... etc. none of these are handwired and cost way too much for what you get, in my opinion.
as the title says, you cannot simply buy a better sounding low powered amp for the money.
