After thoroughly testing all available multi-processors in this category, I tried the ToneLab SE and it totallystole the show.It just sounded great, warm, natural... and fat. And the ToneLab SE physical appearance was impressive. Though it is a rather large unit, I appreciate the layout, and the space between the groovy chrome switches. It it really easy to use and to program. I really like the A/B switch - you can have an A/B channel within one program. The effects are top notch. The amp models and cabs are really cool.I have a few complaints and suggestions though: 1) The control pedals do not have a wide enough range, so you go from zero to 100 too quickly. Because of this, Irun the output of the Vox into an Ernie Ball volume pedal so I can be more subtly expressive. It would be great if the pedal on board was sufficient and I didn't have to hook up another pedal. If these expression pedals could be designed to have a longer sweep, they could be much more musically useful. 2) The "pedal" section allows you to use only one "pedal" at a time. So you couldn't use a fuzz and the univibe at the same time, for example. 3) It's got a really nice tuner. But to use it, you've got to stop playing, hold a switch... As a touring musician, this doesn't fly.I need a tuner on at all times so I can check in the middle of a song... Because of this reason, I have an externalBoss tuner I go through so I can always check my tuning. It would be great if there was a way the tuner could be quickly accessed without muting the program you're on.4) It has an effects loop which is useful. An auxiliary input would be a nice feature so you could mix in another signal.5) Seems to me that the system exclusive via midi method of backing up program data is outdated and inconvenient. Maybe some companies are doing this and I'm not aware, but I'm waiting for the time when program information on a unit like this could be saved to a flash memory card.If the unit goes down while your traveling, or you need to quickly import all of your programs to another unit, it would be nice to simply insert your little memory card and be quickly and easily back in business. (a usb interface might be cool too)6) A few of the chrome switches have become intermittent after 1.5 years of usage.Summary: I realize it's a tall order to try to fit everything into one unit. Because there are aspects of the pedal that I'm not happy about, I've ended up with a situation where I have severaladditional pedals I use in conjunction with the ToneLab SE. (Volume pedal and tuner for example) which is unfortunately redundant... Despite my complaints and these inconveniences however, this is still the best pedal I've used.It sounds great. I'm proud to own it. It's sooo good... and yet, with a few improvements, it wouldbe the absolute king of pedals.

Awesome

This Thing is just great! A little recommendation for those that are thinking about buying it. Be very prepared to spend some time tweaking it because you can't just plug it into your amp and go like most stomp boxes. I'm just now getting to the point where i can maximize its functions and I've had for over 6 months. the tones and effects you can get with this thing are tremendous. Never heard better. Definitely not a beginners item though

The Cream Of The Crop!!!

See all my reviews

this is a beauty!!! I'm a true fan of Valvetronix products, and this is one of my all-time favorites! you will never and I mean NEVER! going to get the feel and the sound you get from this, with ANY of these "so-called" digital processors like the line 6 boss or digitech, their sound it's so fake and lifeless, by other hand, the Tonelab SE delivers such a FANTASTIC tone! and it's a no-brainer device too, very versatile and very user friendly, it's an absolute shame Vox discontinued this model and "upgraded" it with the Tonelab LE, which is a very good effect board too, but it's missing the extra pedal in the Tonelab SE, (what a shame) anyways if you ever have the chance to try/buy the Tonelab SE, you better do it! I guarantee you'll be so happy for a lifetime!

It just plain works!!!

By Rockin with a Purpose

See all my reviews

I have owned the VOX Tonelab SE for over a year now and use it 2-3 times a week in live applications. I have used it plugged directly into the PA (make sure you switch output to direct) and I currently use it running through a Roland JC120 Silver Cone clean (make sure you switch output to amp). The presets are decent and can actually be used right out of the box. However, if you'll spend some time tweeking and finding "YOUR" settings, you can create some seriously sweet sounds and warm tones. I have been playing guitar for over 25 years using the some of the best gear available. This Vox just plain works, day in day out, after being banged around, dropped, spilled on, and worked way too hard. It just plain works. If you have the mega-bucks to buy all of the original gear it would require to create the same level of tone, effects, and functionality you get from this unit, then buy them, otherwise..here ya go. It doesn't get much better than this either way!!!

great floor pedal

By danny-wLJdg

from tombstone, AZ

great pedal, a little skeptic at first.the amp models sound great and realistic through some headphones but quite different through an actual amp.i run mono lt to a jcm 900 100 watt in the return jack on the back and the rt output to my PA system, setting at line not amp. it takes alot of tweaking and like alot of the outher reviews i read before buying this unit, the sounds you get depend on the guitar and amp your running it through, if you want that classic fender sound you will get it playing through a classic fender amp and an old strat, but all in all the warmth is real and this is by far a great pedal! p.s. dont think the real metal thrasher's will dig it, geared for rock n roll.

Probably the best effects system out there

By Anonymous

from Undisclosed

This thing works great as a preamp to your stack or straight line into a PA. The tube system makes for great tone and excellent effects preamp. Although it should never replace stomp boxes theres always things you can get from them and advantages such as your own sounds as opposed to premade. It is a little pricey however if youre looking for an excellent effects module that is perfect for live atmospheres than this is definently the choice.

The Best Versatle Tonal system you can get.

By I'dratherbeplayingmystrat

from Spring Lake, Mi

Tonelab is quite an appropriate name for this advanced system.I cannot really find anything I don't like about this piece of equiptment. The accuracy of the amp models are way beyond mediochore amp models Vox has done an excellent job reproducing the tone, and characteristics of these amps faithfully. The effects are way above the average you see today. And a huge selection of effects you actually could see your self using. Unlike another pedalboard whos name I won't mention. The tonelab se is also set up in such a way that you can dial in your tone, or the tone your trying to get with very little effort. Controls are placed perfectly, easy access overall. Right now my set up is an Eric Johnson Strat,an American Fender Deville 410. Over all the combination is WOW.So what are you waiting for buy the tonelab se...

RCVTM

Easy as hell, sounds amazing! 96 preset patches organized into 24 banks. 32 presets = Banks 1-8, and there's 4 pedal switches. And the switch is smooth and immediate. Banks 9-16 and then 17-24 repeat the first 8 presets. So you can edit S-R-V or EVH, and you've haven't lost it because there's two more that haven't been altered in the other banks. I love the way it?s all organized, pure genius. Big props to the engineers on this one, I was considering buying a pro, expensive multi-processor but I don't think I'll need it now. You can also save a bundle on a new amp, you won't need it with this because it adds a tone of wattage, and it has noise reduction and presence. This thing also responds to your different guitars, unlike most modelers. The best feature, if I had to choose, is the variable preamp tube built in. Basically, you're not going to need to use any other stomp box with this, even the tuner is awesome and accurate.

The most amazing multi effects peddle out there

By TaylordLordofTay

from Lexington, Kentucky

I must say that my contentment with this product has been more than I could have ever imagined. I generally play classic rock with my band, but also play smooth jazz, hard rock, and just about any good guitar I hear that I like (classical, rock, reggae, jazz, etc.) It has met, and even surpassed all of my expectations to the greatest extent immaginable in a single peddle. The tone quality and body of the sound is absolutely amazing, and the tube in the peddle gives the sound a warmth never before immaginable. Overall this peddle has been the one thing besides my guitar itself that has made me enjoy sitting down and just playing guitar for hours at a time and never getting bored. Definately a thumbs up. I would recommend this item as a great buy. It will help you as a musician and give you a more distinct taste for tone than you ever thought you could have.

Almost Perfect

By Tone squisher

I have messed around with the tonelab for about 4 hours and I finally got some decent tones out of it. It has a lot of potential but you need to have an ear to really dial in what you want. The factory setting are good but sound a little too analog/muffled sounding on the overdrive patches. I am running this into a Fender Deville 410, so having a tube pre and tube power amp helps as well. Overall there is no other footboard with this many features for this price.

I've tried them all...Line 6, Digitech, Boss and Vox effects. Nothing is better than the VoX tonelab se. Plus it is easy to use. I have all the sound I ever wanted in an effects floorboard and I have make the sound I want. This is a piece of work. I recommend this for guitarist everywhere. Don't waste your money on something cheap, BUY THE VOX TONELAB SE!!!!

Best thing next to owning all the gear it models

By 5thumbs-R63i3

from Southwest Missouri

You?ll get many "very good" sounds out of the TLSE right from the box. Spend some time with a MIDI-enabled computer and the TLSE Sound Editor, and you can get some "great" sounds out of it with not too much work. Two of my faves (Brian May and Sabbath) are pretty easy to dial in. Marshall and VOX sounds are easy to get nailed (and many interesting clean/almost-clean sounds are great as well.) Not that it can't do more...I just haven't tried other directions yet.If you're looking to emulate a particular artist, the Tonelab (not TonelabSE) come with a lot of artist-specific patches, many are quite close right out of the box. If you have a TLSE and want to use the TL patches, you can swap them around via the Sound Editor software. (The software comes with the default patches for both the Tonelab and TonelabSE.) I'd recommend starting with those patches and experimenting until you get the sound you're looking for. It's pretty easy to get the sound you're after with some time to experiment. One complaint...I'll echo the often heard bit about having the compressor pedal in with all the other effects pedals...I worked around this issue by putting a rack compressor in the effects loop on the TLSE.

This pedal is the single best effects unit I have ever heard. This will produce ANY sound you can think of and is soooo versatile! This is even better than the Boss GT-6, which I have also used. Ignore the price and get this! You will never be sorry! The tube sound really shows and the double pedals allow you to tweak the effects a bunch.

Worth Every penny

I bought this a little while back because the distortion and DSP effects on my amps weren't that great. This has everything you need. Excellent tube distortion, and provides the best wah I've ever used. You don't even need an amp, just plug into the mixing board. And it's great for recording! This is the best piece of equipment I've ever bought.

Pretty good

By W_bNiJsW2

from Hot Springs, AR

First, I'll say that it's pretty durable. The metal construction of the frame and switches is nice compared to the plastic counterparts out there. Many of the effects are nice, the delays, phase, flanges. The wah effects are pretty good, I particularly like the autowah. The downside to is that you cannot combine a wah with say the compression, they are on the same dial. You get most of your distortion by amp and cab combinations. The only real bad thing I can say about this unit is that it was difficult for me to get a good clean setting that wouldn't distort at louder volumes. I've talked to some reps on the subject and they said that the best way to use it is running directly into the back of my amp and bypassing the preamp, but I still encountered this problem. You just have to play with it a lot to get the EQs set to avoid most of this problem, then your amp may be better suited to it, mine was not. All in all it's a good rig, I've used it a great deal in live and recording situations. I bought mine when they first came out and it was way over $600, now they are down they are probably closer to a better value.

Very close to an all in one processor

By voodoo67

from columbus

For original sound, I prefer my Marshall DSL 50 and a few pedals straight into the guitar. For the most recent cover band I have joined, though, the tone lab SE has proved to be an extremely useful tool. Our set covers material from SRV - where I use the twin reverb model - to Tool - where I use the Soldano model- Obviously, this pedal gives me a broader range of sounds to cover this spectrum than my Marshall. I feel like this pedal does a great job modeling EVERY SINGLE AMP, CAB, and EFFECT available for use. Did I mention that I plug directly into a DI box into the board? The fact that I don?t need to bring an amp to cover gigs - and get sounds ranging from blues to metal - makes this unit a great buy for me. It also serves as a great practice amp as it works well with a pair of headphones. Nice feature when you have roommates etc. My only problem is that certain effects combinations are not possible - at least to my knowledge - such as wah and overdrive. Although there are many amp and cab models ? I feel that they missed a few, such as the Marshall 100 watt SLP (I realize that they had to narrow the selection down, but this one seemed like a no brainer) or a cab with Celestion vintage 30?s. I would have also liked to see a Bogner. Overall great product though.

I have tried the desk top version and this is well worth the extra money for all the other features. As far as I can tell, it is a well designed and very functional machine. I haven't tried all the other brands but I have dialed in some amazing tones and am well pleased with it so far. Try it and see.

I didnt like this pedal when I first brought it home, but,as I learned to use it my reaction was wow.As I became more familliar with the controls my reaction was WOW!The tube is the stuff. One of my bands plays without amps and uses electronic drums. Through the PA the Vox is excelent. The fx are pretty good, could be a little better, you can add more with the fx loop.Ibought the pod xt live and the gnx4.I returned both of them.Good fx, dead amp tone.Try the Vox and hear the difference.
