OVERVIEW

A bass that'll to show off your toughest chops.

Bassist Gene Simmons teamed up with Cort to produce this stunning version of his legendary Axe electric bass. This bass is authorized by Gene Simmons, and each Axe is adorned with Gene's signature on the headstock. The Cort Axe Bass reproduces the bass guitar Gene made so famous”the same style of bass that Gene plays onstage, and it can be yours at a fantastic price.

The axe-shape body has the same style and flare as the demon's own, complete with a painted silver blade on a shiny black, insane-looking axe-head. The bass guitar's mahogany body produces crisp tone with plenty of heavy bass for that signature Detroit Rock City sound. The rosewood fretboard and EB6 4-string bridge add clarity to the Gene Simmons Axe, so you get definition with each note you strike.

At the heart of the axe-shaped Simmons bass is its electronics system. The Mighty Mite MMJB-R and MMPB-4 pickups produce clear, bright tone, with low noise. Controls include Volume, Tone, and a toggle switch to select the bridge or mid pickups, so you can dial in your ultimate demon tone.

Each Cort Gene Simmons Axe boasts a chrome bridge cover, which adds to the overall beauty of this monster and protects your hand from sharp saddle screws. The bass is equipped with Gene's signature on the headstock and delivered a Gene Simmons custom gig bag.

I won this bass in a contest so I really have no right to complain about anything. Therefore, I will write a review as if I had paid for this.

Pros: It looks great. The finish is real nice. It's real solid. Out of the box it was actually playable; not bad for under $500

Cons: This is definitely not a practice bass. You can't sit and play it very well. It's best suited for being played onstage for a few songs. It's a bit neck heavy. The pots need reset. They are offset, which can cause the knobs to grind into the finish. The gig bag has a giant picture of Gene's mug on it. That's not an issue if you're 15 years old.

If you want to spend a few bucks on some new pickups and a nice setup, you will have a damn good bass.

Comments about Cort Gene Simmons AXE Electric Bass Guitar:

I have had this nearly 2 months now and still stand by my original review with one exception. I changed the pickups to Dimarzio DP126 and it makes an incredible difference. I read someghere that the mighty mites were good for the bedroom/studio but not live and this is SPOT ON. the for the price I still rate 5 stars. Also, if you are looking to upgrade from the ugly gig bag I have found that this fits nicely in the coffin univeral bass case.

Gene Simmons Axe Bass WOW!!

Comments about Cort Gene Simmons AXE Electric Bass Guitar:

A deal from the KISS demon?! I am here to say YES and what a "Axe" it is! It plays with resounding punch with super powerful lows. I am very satisfied, however, if I could make one negative comment. It is not balanced properly and the neck falls low if you do not counter weight it! Overall, great stuff and Rock On!

2 Thumbs Up For Gene & Cort

By Anonymous

from Undisclosed

Comments about Cort Gene Simmons AXE Electric Bass Guitar:

I was delighted to see this entry from Cort with a price tag much more aligned with what I was willing to pay for the time being. Don't get me wrong, I've owned the real deal before, both Axe & Punisher, and while they are true and exacting in every way, the price tag demands big stacks of benjamins. That's not to say spending nearly $500 on the Cort Axe is chump change either. To anyone who is considering purchasing one of these Axes, you will not be disappointed. This is worth every dollar. I was pleasantly surprised and more than pleased with the craftsmanship and musicality of this product. It is a true replica in every sense of the word and I'd love to see a side by side comparison with the $5k top tier Axe. I think the Cort model would more than hold it's own. With the pickup capabilities of the Mighty-Mites if Gene stepped onto the stage with this model, you'd be hard pressed to hear or see the difference. I just got off the phone with a Musician's Friend product rep inquiring as to when they'll be offering the Cort Punisher Bass that is just now becoming available. It was selected at the 2011 NAMM as a Top Ten product and I want to be first in line to buy one as well just based solely on how well the Axe was made by Cort. Buy it, you won't regret it! Keep Rockin'!

One Heck Of A Nice Bass

By The Penguin

from Ohio

Comments about Cort Gene Simmons AXE Electric Bass Guitar:

I found this bass by accident while looking for my first guitar. Being a Gene Simmons fan, this was Cort was to good to pass up.While the box arrived in perfect condition and there wasn't any sign of damage, there were two things wrong.1. A strap button was missing.2. When I plugged the bass in, the electronics were dead. Turns out the lead wire was touching where it wasn't suppose to.It's obvious that Cort doesn't put an emphasis on their quality control. That's the reason why I gave this guitar a low score on Quality. The guitar itself sounds wonderful. For me, the bass is perfectly balanced and have no issues with it being heavy on one end or the other.I think the gig bag with Gene's picture on it is a little childish though. If you're looking for something more mature and need a case, I recommend a coffin case. There's different sizes, so make sure you get one big enough.

Comments about Cort Gene Simmons AXE Electric Bass Guitar:

Read all the reviews, researched on youtube and finally dropped the hammer during the spring sale. After installing the strap button I was off to band practice at the studio. I was very impressed with the playability and sound of this instrument. After reading the reviews I figured I would have to replace the pickups but this is not the case. I was going through a GK 300W and 8 tens and they sound great. They are here to stay! No problems cutting through the mix and the bass has a nice growl and is punchy. I have read that they are too clean, but I don't understand those comments. The neck is perfect and no protruding frets etc... I was happy with the amount of neck relief and the height of the action. It's a pretty fast neck and reminds me of my Thunderbird IV or Fender precision. It's not as chunky as my Warwick Thumb. The intonation is perfect. The only complaints are the neck dive and Gene's face on the gig bag, but who cares I'm playing an AXE!!!

I own a "real" GS1 neck thru AXE bass which I bought from Gene himself. That one is AWESOME and worth every penny. This version is for the KISS fan who wants one but doesn't have the $$$ and is REALLY a super bass for the $$$. Very impressive!!!

Comments about Cort Gene Simmons AXE Electric Bass Guitar:

I have been a Gene Simmons fan for 30+ years; he's the reason I first picked up a bass back in ?75. Currently my main bass is a American Fender Jazz V so I was a little skeptical about this bass. I must say I am impressed. The action is good, construction seems top-notch and the bass is just way too cool. Those pick-ups are bright as heck and have that classic growl when cranked up. This won't be my main gig bass, but it will make the stage every time I play a KISS tune. This AXE bass is a must-have for any serious KISS fan. Thanks, Gene!

Perfect for any KISS tribute band or KISS fan on a budget.

Comments about Cort Gene Simmons AXE Electric Bass Guitar:

I recently landed a gig in a KISS tribute band. Unlike any other band Ive been in, this gig required a costume and a certain instrument. Its a lot of financial dedication, but everyone Ive spoken to who has done this has said it is worth the cost of admission. To my relief, I found out that Cort released budget versions of Mr. Simmons famous basses. Ive always favored the look of the Punisher more, but i found a SICK deal on a used Axe bass. PROS: - The price was right.

The soft gig bag is pretty padded for its price range. - The padded blade cover is a nice touch. - Once set up properly, the bass plays pretty well. - After I relocated the front strap button, it had a lot less neck dive. - The basss weight isnt that bad. - The bass is nice and bright sounding, but can be made to sound more Gene Simmons with a flick of the pickup selector switch. - The neck pocket was pretty tight, and the finish seemed good for this bass. - The finished neck didnt get sticky on me after playing it a while. - The bridge cover looks cool, but is very functional. The way the body is cut, your palm is forced to rest on it. Once you figure out this basss right hand placement, its joy to play. - This bass just looks cool. While not as comfortable to play as my Fenders, it more than makes up for it with traffic-stopping looks. You will be noticed! CONS: - Its shaped like an axe. Sitting down to play it is not an option. However, thats the nature of this bass. - The zippers on the gig bag feel cheap - The giant Gene graphic on the gig bag is so embarrassing to walk around with. Sorry, in my opinion, I like a subtle instrument case. However, that is Gene for you. It doesnt matter, because I will probably get a hard case down the road. - The bass came with so much relief in the neck, that my luthier gave the trus rod nut 6 turns before it was remotely playable. However, I hear this is common for these basses. - The front strap button is in a horrible place. Its mounted on the side of the body. I use Schaller strap locks and could just see it jabbing me. I repositioned it under the basss horn, and it works great. - The tuning keys were misaligned when fastened to the headstock. I had the mounting screws re-drilled so the tuners could be realigned properly. - Trying to reach the D string tuning key is a stretch. - The bass is almost too bright and the sound was thin. I had to use my Sansamp Bass Driver to beef up its tone. Lowering the bridge pickup height may help. - The tone knob is a joke. There is no gradual roll off/on. Its basically all or nothing. - My biggest gripe is the electronics. For some reason, this bass makes all my amps randomly distort. Im not sure if its a wiring issue or pickup defect. It doesnt matter, because I was planning to replace them with EMGs anyways. A little sooner than I planned, but oh well. I wouldve returned the bass, but I already had it set up, and I had new $ strings installed. Besides all the basss small issues, it can be great with some TLC and new pickups. I would never play this bass in any other type of band, but for the KISS fan out there, this is a great bass for the money. I bought this bass, and it was listed in B condition. I get it, and it still had plastic on the pickups, and not ONE scratch! There was a slight paint blem the size of a pea on it, but to save the money and have a return policy; you cant beat it. Look no further to fill your God of Thunder fantasy.

Comments about Cort Gene Simmons AXE Electric Bass Guitar:

Only negative I could muster up is the huge screen of Genes face on the gig bag...I would have preferred a black bag with Genes embroidered signature, or even just a plain black bag with a Cort logo, but you know Gene...go large or go home. For a great price you can get a MF deluxe bass case that fits and save yourself the emberassment.
Awesome Bass, Only reason you would get this is you LOVE Kiss, you are in a Kiss tribute band, or you collect stuff...I Love Kiss and collect stuff. I am not a bass player, actually play a little guitar, but what Kiss fan would be without this thing...it is freakin awesome! Gene sells the pro version of this guitar on his site autographed...(who has that kind of cash, not me) .I got mine here at MF for a tenth of the price. I would bet that other than a set neck, higher end pups, better wood, and a hardshell case, the two are almost identicle. So, as far as features go, its a bass, it looks like an AXE...what more do you need to know...
Awesome quality for the money. Actually a steal. Gene made the comment in an interview that the fans wanted an Axe bass they could afford and he delivered....THANK YOU GENE! Us Kiss fans deserve only the best.
Again, compared to the elite version, this is a complete bargain.

Comments about Cort Gene Simmons AXE Electric Bass Guitar:

A childhood dream of mine to have an axe like Gene. I am a casual player, and this thing is not very comfortable to play, but its worth every dime just to hang it like a piece of art.
Simple volume, tone dials. Pickup toggle. Amazing finish.
Excellent quality for inexpensive piece. Again, finish is perfect. Strong sound with minimite pu's, difficult to play while seated due to shape.
For the price, its worth it to hang it up like artwork.

Comments about Cort Gene Simmons AXE Electric Bass Guitar:

I have been wanting one of these for quite a while. I kept putting it off, figuring they would be available forever, we all know Gene likes money so what a great way to keep his name out there. Then I just recently found out these were discontinued. If I wanted one I had to move quick. I bought the first one I found. I wasn't sure how much I'd play this, I kind of thought this would be a novelty instrument that looked cool but didn't play that well. When I pulled it out of the case I was really impressed with the quality, first with how it looks, and then with how well it played (after a little set up, and a new set of my favorite strings) The Mightymite pick ups sound pretty good, but I'm sure I'll eventually swap them out for some EMG's, not because the Mightymites are bad, I'd just want to see how some EMG's will sound in it. Overall I'm really happy I didn't miss out on these, I'm also glad that the gig bag that came with mine didn't have the Gene Simmons face graphic on it just the GS signature and Cort on the front. The only negative I have is that it's impossible to play sitting down, I figured that before I bought it, besides look at it, this sure wasn't built to play sitting around the camp fire.

Overall this is a great bass and if you've wanted one you better get one if you can still find one. I liked mine so much I just bought a Punisher.
