I've been playing around with the guitar for decades. Nothing serious, just a private jamming kind of thing. It's been many years since I've picked up a bass. When I purchased this bass, I would consider myself an intermediate player. This bass plays and feels like a guitar. It's small but not tiny looking, the frets are easy to play, sounds great, and it's lightweight compared to other basses I've looked at and played. I'm a woman with small hands and it is perfect for me. My SO, who is a professional player, was surprised by how nice this bass actually was for it's price and thinks I've made a great purchase.

5 Years Later, Still Going Strong

By Thomas Caja

Comments about Dean EVO XM Bass:

I've owned the Dean Evo XM bass for five years now, and it's still my primary instrument. I'm a big fan of the non-glossy finish and short scale (I've got short fingers), and the 24 frets seems to impress a lot of folks (though I rarely travel that far up the neck). I do occasionally have to get it set up to eliminate fret buzzing, but that's probably due to volatile Cleveland weather changes screwing with the neck. I eventually had an active preamp installed to give it some more oomph, an alteration I would recommend to others, but it's not necessary. With so few short scale basses available, this sucker offers very solid features for very little cash.

Comments about Dean EVO XM Bass:

My wife and I play coffee house shows with a variaty of instruments. My only bass was a Peavey T40 and sounded great direct to the PA. She's a heavy beast (the T40 that is) and takes alot of room. I plug the little Dean into a Hartke Bass Attack D.I. and Boss chorus stomp and dial in some great sound. I'll keep the T40 for the studio and save my back. Geat job on the EVO XM.

Comments about Dean EVO XM Bass:

Nice bass but... I WILL NOT BUY ANOTHER
Its a good instrument over priced though. its kinda heavy I've played too shows with it and talk about pain in the neck
Its a nice solid bass but on the tuning pegs its a sharp turn I've broke two E strings trying to replace them then the tone pot broke for no reason so I had to fix it and the input jack is always coming loose

hardcore bass

Comments about Dean EVO XM Bass:

This bass was spose to be the gray color like in the picture and the neck was spose to be light......but when i opend it the body was a satin black and the neck was darker and there may be rough spot here and ther on the side with the pick ups "just so you know" but the guitar it self plays very very well the only thing that i noticed is that on the 4th string "the lowest" there was a buzz on the 1st fret and the body had wore down, very small spots that were orange. but the guitar plays well i love it very much great deal,

Great value - buy it

By rJqVpn8NT

from CA - Central Valley

Comments about Dean EVO XM Bass:

Own the bass. Its really good value. Short scale, light, easy to play. The pickups are decent for the cost though somewhat plain. Only negative is the pots are tiny and cheap and the wood in the body is very light and lacks density. I retro'd two music man pups into it and they are not any better than stock other than a bit brighter.

Dean Evo

By Augustine314

from Spartanburg, Sc

Comments about Dean EVO XM Bass:

Other than my evo, i have only had one other bass, which left much to desire. I received the Dean Evo as a birthday present and am extremely happy with it. It has a comfortable weight. It's not too heavy, and has a great sound. There is a slight buzz when the low E string is played. It might just be me though. All in all it is a great value for the price. I would recommend getting this bass.

A Best Buy

By Voxman77

from Largo, Fl.

See all my reviews

Comments about Dean EVO XM Bass:

In my studio, I have gone through an 3/4 cheap bass and a $1400 MusicMan Sillouette 6 string bass that was the size of a guitar. The Dean beats them both. As a guitar player, I confused "short scale" with 3/4's, so it is slightly larger than I had figured. With the 2 humbuckers, it has tons of thunder and instead of a pup switch there are 2 volume controls to blend the pups and a master tone. The woods are greatand it plays so smooth. Beware. This is not a guitar/bass, it is a short scale real bass. So, if you are a guitar player, who needs to play bass once in a while, buy this bass. Or, if you are a young beginner, buy this bass. You won't regret it one bit.

Well worth the price

By CS Farker

from South Carolina

Comments about Dean EVO XM Bass:

I bought this to pull recording duties with my PC and GNX3000. It's very capible of making nice tones. The EVO plays well and isn't as difficult for a person that plays guitar primarily to get used to.The only problems I've had are an output jack that likes to loosen itself up, which I have fixed, knobs that weren't of equal height from the body, fixed, and intonation which looked decent on a standard tuner but a strobe tuner showed that it needed a little help. The problems were minor and easily corrected.I'm not trying to be a professional bassist but I find it fairly easy to get good sounds. I have the bass run through a Digitech GNX-3000 using the GNX's onboard bass amp models.

Comments about Dean EVO XM Bass:

I'm normally a guitar player who uses the EVO to add simple bass parts to previous recordings. Easy-to-play instrument that has good rich sound and plenty of control with the 2 humbucker pickups. Considering the price, a great over-all value.

    Just Plain Awesome

    By BassMastah

Comments about Dean EVO XM Bass:

This bass rocks! It's really cheap for such a great guitar. The double humbuckers really caught my eye, and the 24 frets just made me put this in my shopping cart. An attractive bass that gets me compliments, an amazing sound, and more money in my pocket

    Nice Bass For The Money

    By Anonymous

    from Undisclosed

Comments about Dean EVO XM Bass:

Its A Nice Sounding Bass For The Money, Plus U Get The Extra Pickup And Double Octave Neck. Its Got A Good Feel To It. Its On The Heavy Side But Its Fine For Me Cause I Think The Heavy Ones Sound The Best. The Pickups Are Not As Hot Sounding As My Hamer Slammer Short Scale But Are Good Enough. I Got Mine Used And The Neck Needed A Tweak But Other Than That Its A Good Player.

    Happy

Comments about Dean EVO XM Bass:

The EVO XM is the only bass I have ever owned or played but that doesn't mean I don't know the difference between good tone (which it has) and bad. I'm normally a guitarist but I wanted to get into bass for experimental reasons and cuz its cool. Anyway, I got this for Christmas so I only know a few songs but I do play often and I notice a few33 things: it doesn't sound as bright as most other basses (I like that) There can be some buzzing on the A string but once the strings settle in it is fine, and you can't raise or lower the pick-ups (which I hate Because I do almost everyday on my guitar) But overall, It sounds pretty nice and I don't regret getting this as my 1st bass
