A gorgeous merbau sixer!

The body of the ESP LTD D-6 Bass Guitar is shaped out of merbau, a hardwood native to Southeast Asia giving it a dark hue similar to mahogany. In fact, if it wasn't for the lighter maple of the 5-piece maple/mahogany neck-thru design, you'd have a hard time discerning that this was a neck-thru design from outside appearances as the dark woods are a very close match. The neck itself is a thin "U" shape with a double cutaway design making it easier for players of all sizes to access the frets with ease. This standard scale (34") 6-string bass sports a 54mm standard nut, 24 XJ frets, a rosewood fingerboard, Grover tuners, an ESP DB-6 string-thru-body bridge, and black nickel hardware. The electronics include dual ESP SB-6 (bridge & neck) pickups with an ESP ABQ-3 3-band active EQ which lets you boost or cut lows, mids, and highs before the signal ever hits your amp.

Good bright and gutsy sound, great action and intonation right out of the box

Features:

I was looking for a six string neck through with mahogany/maple neck, similar to my 1976 4001 Rickenbacker that I bought new.  It's action is just as good, and sustain as well.  The active pickups give it a good raunchy sound, but a bit "zingier" high end than the Rick.  It is a lot less noisy as far as hum from flourescents and dimmers than the Rick,  The neck pickup is less "plunky" than the Rick, more like a Fender jazz.  Bridge pickup by itself with some treble added and bass dialed back with mids in the center gives a really good slap tone.  Alittle more deep bottom end than the old Rick, as well.

Quality:

The finish on the neck had a few small bumps in it that I used really fine steel wool to smooth out.

Value:

Really good price with fantastic action and manly tone.

Overall:

Really good action, good sustain, slightly scooped tone naturally.  Run your amp with flat EQ and a fair amount of compression or straight into the board with some compression and a DI gives a solid clear presence.  That clarity, however, will punish you for your mistakes, so hit the right notes............

Great bass for the money

Features:

Active electronics sound good, nice growl to it. The string spacing is 16.5mm for those that want to know that, I prefer wider spacing but for me the change was easy to get used to.

Quality:

Nice finish on all surfaces, bery well built, and heavy! The quality of the hardware is nice too, and the bridge is string through body or bridge.

Value:

Great value! It's hard to find a neck through 6-er that plays and sounds as good as this one. I've been playing bass for about 30 years and like what ESP/LTD has to offer.

Overall:

Overall I think it's a good buy, I may replace the bridge later on with something heavier like a Hipshot but it's not required, just a preference. I gave it 9's across the board except for value which was a 10, a 10 across the board to me is a Yamaha TRB-6P.

Features:

the 3 band eq is great, especially if you want to change tones on the go, and the pickup blend gives you the ability to play in many deferent styles and sounds. unfortunately the pickups are not very clear and always sound slightly washed up, so if you want a brighter tone i would strongly recommend swapping them with some EMGs or other quality pickups. also, the action on this bass is surprisingly low, giving it good playability. the finish is wonderful, looks good anywhere, i just wish it wasnt flat top. the thin neck is great, and the finish doesnt slow you down when your hands get sweaty.

Quality:

my only complaints are 1) the pickups mentioned earlier 2) the low B  string usually doesnt sound very good, i dont know if that relates back  to the pickups or if the problem lies elsewhere and 3) the nobs come  loose after a while and become impossible to keep tight, i suspect there  is some striping in there but iv been to lazy to check it out lately. beyond that it is a quality instrument. the tuners hold tune forever

Value:

when i originally bought this bass around 2007, i believe it cost a little more than it is priced now, looking back, i dont think i would ever pay that much for this bass again, however, the current price seems appropriate

Overall:

this is a quality instrument for the price. its very reliable, and has never let me down for any style of music, if you are new to 6 string bass, this is perfect for learning, however if you are doing any serious giging and taking it on the road, i would recommend replacing the pickups, and keeping it in a hard shell case. if you are new to 6 string, be prepared for the wide fretboard, it takes some getting used to, especially if you have smaller hands like myself.

I'm in love!

Features:

I love this bass.  I have been playing for 17 years, and have THOUGHT I had good basses before...guess not, cuz this beauty makes all my other basses (American made Fender, Ibanez, etc.) seem like wind-up toys!  I love the Pickups, I love the electronics, and I love the finish!  The SINGLE constructive criticism I would have, is I would like the body to be beveled like the B series basses...but that is so trivial that it doesn't even count!

Quality:

Finish is perfect.  It was set-up and even IN TUNE right out of the box!  Pots all feel superb.  Wood is extremely high quality!

Value:

It's a string-thru neck-thru 6 string ESP for this price for crying out loud!  Of course it's a good deal!

Overall:

Very impressed with this instrument.  I will now be a member of the ESP family forever!

This D-6 is definitely the nicest Bass I have ever played in my life. It feels and plays like a much higher dollar instrument. I had some trepidation when I decided to make the switch from 5 to 6 strings, but I am glad I did it. The action on the D-6 is fast, and low. Plays sweet, and the active EQ makes it easy to find your "spot". The extended range of the high C is a welcome addition to my bag of tricks. I highly recommend this bass to any player that needs a professional quality instrument, but doesnt have the $ for something else.
