Comments about ESP LTD SURVEYOR-415 Quilted Maple 5-String Electric Bass Guitar:

INITIALLY, this bass had an electrical problem. It had a slight buzz/distortion to the sound. I played it off and on for a year; I LOVED playing it but I play mostly clean bass and the distortion really created an issue for me. I didn't KNOW that it was an electrical issue; I just thought that was the nature of the electronics installed.
After almost a year, suddenly the volume level froze and wouldn't adjust up or down regardless of pot position. Being a fairly competent guitar tech and electrician, I took the electrical plate up and found that the electronics were crowded in so tight around the input jack, that the terminals were making slight contact to other electrical points.
I loosened, repositioned, and retightened the pots and jack and cleaned up the wiring a little. When I replaced and tightened everything up, the volume worked perfectly and the original distortion was GONE! NOW I LOVE THIS BASS!!!

BEST USE: This bass does an INCREDIBLE job with FAT house systems. I have several professional stage basses (Fender, Carvin) and they don't have the clarity on a fat system that this guitar has. At the church where I play, the house system has some enormous subwoofers and even adjusting the tones on my pro basses won't give me a crisp clean bottom. They're just a little too mushy with way more oommwaaah than thump.
But this bass… Once I got the electronics squared away, this bass sounds INCREDIBLE on our system. The bottom is still fat but in no way mushy; very broad and deep, but still crisp and clean.

FEEL: This bass has a narrow neck (1 3/4") for those folks that like narrow necks. In fact, for a 5-string, it's only 1/8" wider than the neck on my Epiphone hollow-body 4-string (1 5/8"). I favor the feel of this bass more than any of my other 7 basses.

ACTION: I set my action at 7/64" and this bass feels pretty smooth. It's a little higher than my other basses though: I seemed to encounter more fret click with this bass with it lower.

CONS: The only complaint I have with this bass is the intonation. Depending upon the strings, the intonation of this bass is inconsistent fret to fret moving up the neck. It seemed to be worse with flatwounds. It's not enough to be noticeable to a less than perfect ear, but it's definitely not a high, professional level of perfection you get with the frets and fretboards of higher-end basses; but much better than some of the cheap basses I've played.

SUMMARY: If you like brighter sounding bases, this one will please you. For the money, it's a solid bass AS LONG as there are no electrical issues. I would definitely recommend this for someone wanting a good practice bass or someone just starting out on 5-strings. And it also makes a great church instrument!

Comments about ESP LTD SURVEYOR-415 Quilted Maple 5-String Electric Bass Guitar:

My first 5 stringer. Counldn't quite give it a perfect score yet, too soon to tell, but so far so good. I find this bass plays really well, easy to play, fast neck. I'm happy with the bass. Still trying to work with my sound, and options are good, shouldn't have a problem with that. Quality, too soon to tell, I'm sure it'll be good though with the good common components this bass has. Overall, good bass at a good price...
