OVERVIEW

Updated electronics, vintage bridge, and a rugged alder body enhance one of the best Fender Jazz basses yet.

The 5-string Fender American Deluxe Jazz Bass V delivers the modern features that bassists demand in a sleek, familiar electric bass design. An updated preamp circuit brings deeply exhilarating active and passive tone. Powerful-yet-quiet N3 Noiseless pickups present more clean headroom, extended EQ range, and tighter low-end response. The tonal options are vast, thanks to the active/passive toggle switch and passive tone control. These amazing electronics effortlessly handle the low B string with impeccable tone and seismic power. The classic Jazz Bass block fretboard inlays and binding present the Fender American Deluxe V bass in a rightfully classy light.

The bass is crafted with an alder body, a hard wood that provides clear tone, and lasting sustain. The maple neck with modern C-shape, 5-bolt neck plate, compound radius fretboard, asymmetrical neck profile, and contoured heel offer fast action, silky- smooth playability, and make the American Deluxe Jazz Bass extremely easy to play all the way up the neck. The high-mass vintage Fender bass bridge offers compressed and focused bass tone with more mid range punch. It retains the Fender articulation and sparkle, combined with vintage-style saddles to maintain a classic vibe. The combination of a steel plate with brass saddles produces the best possible Fender bass sound.

Pairing up these pickups with the EQ and volume controls provides that notorious Fender Jazz Bass sound that has mystified some of the world's most prominent bassists for decades.

Other features include Stealth "B" string retainer, tinted neck, rolled fingerboard edges, highly detailed nut- and fretwork, genuine bone nut, flathead screws on battery compartment (for easy changes with a coin or pick), gloss polyurethane neck finish, and a gloss urethane body finish to dress the Fender American Deluxe Jazz Bass V 5-string in ultimate style and beauty. Includes case.

I've always been a p-bass guy, until I discovered this beauty. I'm telling ya, if you want an overall versatile bass that is well constructed with a great tone, this is the bass. I was iffy about purchasing this bass due to some people complaining that there is pickup noise... So when I actually recieved the bass and turned it on, I was pleasantly surprised to not hear anything, at all, not even a slight buzz. It's the quietest bass I own! I also have never owned a five string considering I enjoy wrapping my thumb around the neck to play full chords, which is hard to do on a five string. Well, this is probably the most comfortable five string neck I've ever touched, with a silky smooth finish, relatively thin nut and heel width, and asymetric shape. The pearloid inlays are beautiful as well as the binding! I love the tuners, the super dense bridge, and most of all, the electronics. When I first started playing, I was convinced active basses were superior. Once I began to mess with effect pedals, I realized that passive basses work better for adding distortion, octave effects, filters, etc. This bass has both active and passive capabilities. The passive circuit delivers the best tone fender has to offer. When switched to active, you can really dig into the strings and get some heavy growl, or slap away for a dreamy slap tone. The n3 pickups are now at the top of the line as far as I'm concerned. The preamp is great too, every sound is useful without straying too far from the natural jazz bass tone. Oh yeah, how could I forget about the best part, THE LOW B STRING IS THE CLEANEST, FATTEST, PUNCHIEST FIFTH STRING I HAVE EVER HEARD!!! Please do yourself a favor and buy this bass, you will not regret it! It has changed my opinion on jazz basses and five strings!

I gave it a try with three of these...
I ordered a used one at a great price during a blowout sale, however that one was a complete lemon. The buzz from the electronics was unbearable and the bridge pickup stopped working altogether in about a month. I played it maybe twice a week during that time.

The customer service was excellent, as usual, and sent me another used version. While the tone, playability, and cosmetics are fantastic, there was still the buzz from the electronics that were impossible to get rid of without EQing out, which made the great tone I was looking for go away. Even in passive mode, the buzz was very noticeable, both in live settings and recording. When I would switch to active mode, it was impossible NOT to notice how noisy the bass was! My go-to for the past 5 years has been a MM Stingray 5 HH, and it is MUCH quieter than this bass was, even when the Jazz was in passive mode.

I called to set up a return, but the CSR convinced me to take a new one at the same price level, for which I was grateful. When I received the bass, the FIRST thing I notice is that FENDER NO LONGER USES THE SKB CASE WITH TSA LOCKS! I absolutely LOVED the cases they used before, but now it feels much cheaper, and two of the latches were off when I opened the box.

THE CASE FENDER USES NOW IS NOT THE ONE PICTURED ABOVE!

Once I was able to plug in the brand new bass, which was still in the box from the factory, the electronics issue was no different. I am sending the bass back tomorrow for refund and I imagine I'll either look for an older Deluxe, or try out a passive. None of the 3 I received were anywhere near as quiet (as far as buzz/hum is concerned) as the older one I played that inspired me to make the purchase.

MF customer service was EXCELLENT as usual. This is a great bass IF (big if) you can get past the noisy pickups.

Comments about Fender American Deluxe Jazz Bass V 5-String Electric Bass:

Plays and sounds great, but poor craftsmanship and quality control from Femder. Volume pot is junk and the jack won't hold the instrument cable in place. Those are easy fixes. The big one is that the bridge wasn't mounted far enough back on the the body making it impossible to set the intonation on the B string. Moving the saddle to furthest position to the rear still leaves me sharp. I love the bass and would love to keep it but, Musicians friend only offered me a small gift card that won't even cover the volume pot. Guess it's going back.

Just bought my second one for backup. I leave my Modulus basses home because they are expensive and not replaceable. I played Fender Jazz for decades and they finally got the 5 string right. Great all around Bass.

Comments about Fender American Deluxe Jazz Bass V 5-String Electric Bass:

I have had this bass for just over 10 months and have zero complaints. I keep it in the case with a sponge in an open plastic bag and have not had to adjust the truss rod or anything else since I bought it...and I live in Michigan where the winters are incredibly dry, and summers are humid. Even after changing strings it is just solid and reliable.

I have had zero problems with noise from the electronics - truly noiseless in my experience. I have been able to get any sound I want from it (precision-like, musicman-like, traditional jazz, etc.). Now none of these are EXACT of course, but close enough so that I don't feel the need to purchase another instrument.

The action on mine is incredible and the neck is straight as an arrow! I typically have my relief set to around .012-.015 but with this bass I can set the relief to .003-.005 with no buzz whatsoever. This speaks to the neck quality as well as the fret job done at the factory on this.

I was a big Squier supporter (still am to a degree), but after owning this and playing many other instruments since, I will say that there is a clear and huge difference in quality. The balance from string to string, tonal diversity, consistency everywhere, hardware quality - it is all excellent. You will never convince me that the general quality of Squier basses is equal to or better than this. I have owned several new Squiers and they are great....but not like this...I am also a big fan of the rounded heel making it easier to play higher...I didn't realize how nice it was until I went back to playing another bass without it. Not a huge innovation, but a nice addition.

Enough about Squiers though. If you are looking for a versatile bass, look no further. It is a joy to play, and every time I sit down with it to play, it seems like I can find a new sound.

Comments about Fender American Deluxe Jazz Bass V 5-String Electric Bass:

I found some reviews here that mentioned that the bass had a lot of noise. I have not experienced ANY of that. This bass is a machine and a monster. It's big, it's heavy, solid and I think it's a tone machine. I love this thing. It's tough to play at first because of the width of the neck but I absolutely LOVE this thing. Also I saw a comment about them not using the TSA cases anymore. I ordered mine back in Sept. of 14 and I got a TSA case that I'd throw under a truck and it'd be fine so I don't know what that guy was talking about. This bass is a master crafted machine IMO and you gotta know what you are doing to get the tone qualities and playability out of it.

Comments about Fender American Deluxe Jazz Bass V 5-String Electric Bass:

i have a client that brought to my shop 2 of these. one in natural finish with the maple neck and the other one is a sunburst with the rosewood neck. cant really complaint about the the feel of the bass as you can set these with very low action. neck is wide and thin... to wide for my taste but this client loves it (must be, cause he bought a second one knowing the issues from the first). anyway, the biggest downside that these have are the electronics. fender did not shielded the cavities properly. they might thought that the pickups are noiseless but the preamp that these basses have is pretty noisy. both of them buzzed pretty loud, like a cricket! proper shielding almost corrected the problem since there is still a bit of buzz but nothing compared as they came. this is just a thing you dont expect from such an expensive instrument. i mean, proper shielding the electronics is a basic thing.
