OVERVIEW

Updated bridge, new Fender Design tuners, and a new case modernize this classic!

This American Standard Series P Bass V 5-string has a vintage body radius and contour for a classic vibe and feel. The body is rendered in premium alder for optimum tone and sustain. Its rosewood or maple fretboard features detailed fret and nut work. The neck is graphite-reinforced and has rolled edges for a broken-in feel from the get-go. HMV Bridge (high mass vintage) increases sustain, provides punchier tone, beefier looking plates and 3/8" diameter vintage saddles. String height adjustment screws have nylon patches for a tight fit that won't vibrate loose.

A 12-gauge cold rolled steel plate machined brass backstop increases mass, and enhances top end. The socket head intonation screws are engineered for a tighter fit, and are now more stable. Features new Fender design tuning keys. They work great, and are 30% lighter, minimizing neck dip. Classic 20:1 tuning ratio, cast zinc with aluminum string posts and mounting nuts, and steel clovers. Brass worm gears, steel worm drives.

With a thinner undercoat, the American Standard P Bass body breathes easier and has improved sound (more wood influence). Neck pocket paint buildup has been reduced by 40%, greatly improving the wood to wood connection/reaction.

The included SKB rectangular design case, exclusive to Fender, has TSA recognized and accepted locks. Fiberglass reinforced nylon trigger release latching system, indestructible cushioned rubber over-molded handle with flush lock out. Injection molded feet and exclusive arched stacking system.

It's a 4-string P-Bass' bigger, badder brother!

By Glen Smith

from Denver

Comments about Fender American Standard P Bass V 5-String:

The only thing I can find to dislike about this product is the case. Overall, it's an excellent case, but you can tell Fender makes only one version for both the P and the J, meaning neither one fits inside perfectly. That said, the case is so sturdy I could throw it out of my car driving down the highway and nothing would happen to the bass. The bass itself is a keeper and I'm going to sell my J, save some more pennies and get another one of these.
Over the years, I'd become a five-string player. I always wanted to get a P-Bass though. When They came out with this it immediately went on my wish list. After saving up my pennies I finally got one. I picked up the 3-tone burst version, hoping for the old-school P-Bass vibe. I strung it up with a set of flats and it's all that and then some. It sounds exactly like a P-Bass, it just goes lower!
If you're expecting something other than a P-Bass, look elsewhere. The neck is very comfortable, it plays great. The body feels just right. The finish is excellent. I am also a big fan of the new bridge, as their old ones are the only think I don't like about their product. I had put BadAss bridges on my other Fenders, but it's not necessary with this one. The case is also very well made, very sturdy.
Given you can pay much more for other versions of a P-Bass out there (Lakland, Sadowsky, etc.), $1300 for this bass is an absolute steal.

Comments about Fender American Standard P Bass V 5-String:

Okay, I have played for over 30 years and have owned many different 5-string basses: Rickenbacker, MM Sting Ray, Carvin, High-end Ibanez, etc. I have stayed away from Fender as I always considered their basses on the cheap side and old technology. NO MORE! This bass simply is Incredible. It is made of fine craftsmanship and the sound is too die for. It has so much low-end punch and throaty/mellow mids. Perfect for Rock, blues, and jazz. One guy told me, this bass has lots of personality and sounds thick and alive. Some call it the Fender "mojo". This definetly has it. The neck the paint job, the hardware, is simple but just right. Nothing fancy and not as versatile as some may want with the passive pickups and the tone knob, yet it has such a distinctive sound taht you do not need it. I compared the sound with the Jazz version. The jazz version is very nice, brighter, and probably more versatile in tones, but overall it sounded flat to me. I had a sales guy play both for me as well, and we both agreed the P bass was exceptional overall. The 3 tone sunburst with the rosewood finger board is the one I got - it is just gorgeous - the paint job is first class with subtle blending from dark to light, and the finger board and frets are perfection. The low-B string is tight and not too boomy. Nice harmonics and over tones on the sounds. This bass will allow you full emotion and expression as you can squeeze out of it. This bass is not for thrashers or speed demons. It is definetly more of a "classic" rock sound or old-school" if you will. Right now, everyone seems to be getting back to the original old school set-ups as frankly the new technology sounds lifeless and generic. This will break the mold as Fender has definetly gone back to the future. Well done Fender! We finally have a new Fender P-Bass we can be proud of! Just pick your color and get it - do not hesitate. Just know that this has a punchy throaty tone. Finally the case that comes with it is VERY nice. great latches, styling, protection, fit, etc. This case is definetly a $125 value by itself, so when you factor that into the price, this bass gives you the most bang for your buck. Best of all - MADE IN THE USA!!

Fender got it right

Comments about Fender American Standard P Bass V 5-String:

This was my first fiver after 20+ years of using my trusty '68 Fender 4 string P-Bass as my main EB. I was a bit apprehensive at first because I bought it online, but once it was in my hands, my concerns disappeared. It has the classic P-Bass sound that everyone knows as the industry standard. The QC on this bass is very good, love the finish, and best of all the neck is very comfortable, smooth and easy to play. The thinner finish does make a difference as well. I have had two(very small)problems which are the reason quality was rated at 4.5 instead of 5. 1)The tuning ratio of these new tuners seems somewhat different than my old Fender, and maybe it's just the new strings, but they don't seem to hold the pitch as well as my old P-bass. Maybe time will tell. I also thought the nut could have been filed a little better, but I fixed that myself in only a few minutes. Overall, though, this is a great Bass, and just what I needed to expand my sound horizons.

Review of the American Standard V 5-String

Comments about Fender American Standard P Bass V 5-String:

Mine is black with a maple neck. I was a little concerned that the neck would be a little thick near the body, but it is not. It is a very comfortable play. If I were a wealthy man I would have one of every color to suit my mood of the day. I LOVE this bass.
I love the bass. The pick-ups produce a clean, rich, and "fat" tone. I paired it with a bassman TV amp. The combo is unbelievable!
It is a Fender, what else is there to say?
I saved and waited...I knew the price going in. It was worth the wait!

Good Pbass sound with big ass bottom

Comments about Fender American Standard P Bass V 5-String:

I have a number of basses. I had used a MM StingRay V for contemporary sound or a 4-string Pbass for a more traditional sound. This P bass V 5-string has replaced my 4-string P-bass. The set up out of the box sucked but after a few months tweeking the neck, using nut files and trying out a few different sets of flatwound strings, I've dialed in that traditional sound with the way deep big ass bottom that's great for the blues or reggae. BTW my amp rig is a GK 1000 with a Carvin 18" - guaranteed to shake and bake!

P BASS RULES

Comments about Fender American Standard P Bass V 5-String:

I have been playing bass over twenty years and have several basses. My favorite and most trustworthy has always been my Fender P Bass. I've never wanted to play a five string but when Fender made a 5 string P Bass I had to have it. Hands down the best bass I've ever owned, great tone, lightweight, easy to play, the best looking bass out there, I play it through an Ampeg rig and you couldn't find a more perfect bass sound anywhere for any style. I now see why everyone is switching to five strings, they are much easier to play and all this time I thought they would be tougher. All you five string players had us 4 string guys fooled. I highly recommend this bass, the setup was perfect and almost in tune right out of the box, not a scratch on it. Fender Rules. Proud to now be a five string guy.

Very Good Bass

Comments about Fender American Standard P Bass V 5-String:

I've tried this bass at a local music store excited to play the 5 string p bass. I own a p bass of my own a MIA 4 string. And i LOVE IT, so i expect to love the 5 string as well... Well I do like it a lot bot not love it, it is a great bass don't get me wrong, but i would like more options and more tone. I played this after I played a 5 string Music Man Stingray and I have to say they came close but overall the Music Man won my heart, but this is a memorable bass indeed!!

Comments about Fender American Standard P Bass V 5-String:

I have two jazz basses (victor bailey 5 and hot rodded marcus miller 4) and decided that i needed a dependable backup and could think of no bass more dependable for than the precision. A local guitar shop just got one of these in and i will be putting a down payment on it very soon. This one is the candy cola with the maple neck and is an amazing value. Although I have had quality issues with Fender this bass has none.

Thank you, Fender - FINALLY!

Comments about Fender American Standard P Bass V 5-String:

I play 5's exclusively, but I did have an American Precision 4, because everyone needs a Precision, right? I sold it when they brought out the 5's and ordered mine here on Musician's Friend. It has the classic P-Bass sound that is in such high demand. The bass is truly a work of art. The back of the neck on mine is smoothe and slick, unlike a previous review. The fit and finish are what you'd expect from an American P-Bass - Exceptional. The frets are finished well along the edge of the fretboard and the new bridge is a welcome improvement. I have had two problems which are the reason quality was rated at 4 instead of 5. 1) When I changed the strings to my preferred SIT set, a ferrule fell out of the bottom of the bass. Fixed that with a toothpick. 2) It has one high fret, 18th fret in fact. I'll have to get a tech to do a fret-level on it to take care of that one.All in all, I am pleased though and don't plan on ever selling this one. It's a keeper.

Great Bass

Comments about Fender American Standard P Bass V 5-String:

I have been playing a 63 Fender Precision bass for 20 years and I was leary about the P bass going 5 string. I thought they couldn't keep the same tone. I was pleasantly suprised. This bass is easy to play, sounds like a tride and true Precision Bass with no complicated electronics to muddle up the sound. Set up was perfect right out of the box just plug and play. It sounds awesome through my SVT-4PRO and Ampeg cabinet. Excellent Bass and I highly recommend this bass if you are looking for a 5 string with that true Fender tone.
