I've had this bass and gigged out with it for 5 years....it is main bass. I liked it so much, I bought the 4 string version too. I've always been afraid to take my American out to every gig...have had too many stolen in the past. I bought this as a starter 5 string for me (I always played 4) and was blown away. As a former GC employee, I have played a lot of basses in my day and I must say, the Fender V Deluxe is one of the best bases for the 700-800 price range. The active pups are quiet which is good for me because I use a lot of FX. The neck has a nice feel to it. It stays in tune nicely....which is rare for the weather we get here in New England. Compared to the American Deluxe...I find that the MIM's in the upper class have better playability out of the box than the American ones do. The active pup's can be a little hard on an amp. If you don't know what you're doing, I would suggest something with Passive pups until you explore your amp a little more. A little too much gain can make the pups too muddy or tin'y. I found it easy to get the tone I wanted, the power I needed, the neck feel I wanted...this is a solid bass. Any bassist would be stupid to not have one of these in their bag of tricks. For that nu-metal sound with my Dunlop DI W/ Distortion, this thing is a monster! For more funky ska like sound, I dial up the middle position with a little boost in the levels and my BBE on...sounds like Sublime with a heavy boomy bottom. Or, I dial it all the way back to the bridge pup for a hollow almost Green Day sound (which is funny, I think that guy uses a PBass.) If you're not sure whether to get a pbass, jbass, or pjbass...just go for the active JBass. Wicked versitle, strong, won't let you down.

The Fender Deluxe Active Jazz 5 string's tone on is decent. It is a fairly versatile bass. I used one for Rock, Country, Gospel, and Pop styles. It's Mexican made so you do have to be somewhat wary of construction flaws. The Mexican Fenders are hit and miss when it comes to quality. I had a problem with the small crack in the back of the headstock at the B string's tuner. Further review of these basses showed me that the 3 others I came across also had the same defect. For the $700 price tag there are in my opinion better basses to look into. The Lakland 55-01 is a good example. However, if you're looking for a reliable backup bass this one will suit your needs well.

Comments about Fender Deluxe Active Jazz Bass V:
I purchased this bass guitar 2 months ago and I had it shipped in the US. I am actually from the Philippines. I just got it the other day and all I can say is "Thank you Fender and Musician's Friend" for this awesome bass guitar. My dream bass guitar is the american deluxe but when I played this, I got comfortable with the tonation and feel of the guitar. I love it.

Comments about Fender Deluxe Active Jazz Bass V:
Finally got my MIM Jazz Deluxe V. I've been playing a MIJ Fender Jaguar, which plays awesome, but have wanted another string for quite some time with the same awesome tone as my jag. My new jazz bass is vintage white, and I love the color! I wanted to lick it the first time I saw it because it looks just like vanilla pudding. Besides the great color and finish, you can dial in pretty much any sound you're looking for with the active EQ. I definately recommend this bass to anyone looking for a high quiality 5 string bass with the legendary sound to back it up, and doesn't want to break the bank.

I have a friend who's brother just passed away. His brother was a bass player. I am also a bass player. My friend decided to give me his brothers bass(such an honor) because being a bassist, I would appreciate it. What an incredible instrument! You can easily y tune in a p-bass sound or cut out some of the fullness for some funky stuff! Buy this thing, its worth every penny!
Comments about Fender Deluxe Active Jazz Bass V:
I'm in my third year at UMass Amherst and since coming here in 2007, I have played 6 semesters in the Mass Marimba Band, Hoop Band, and the UMass Drumline's Front Ensemble. The first guitar I played at UMass was a Fender Fretless Jazz Bass (4 string), which was great, but couldn't produce more than a few different textures and barely had enough power to cut through the lower end brass and marimbas. God bless my parents, because for Christmas 2009 I was able to pick this bass out of the Fender lineup and they paid for it. I haven't turned back since. Since getting this bass, I've been able to balance my sound to fit into any ensemble and play any style of music. The active pickups are absolutely clutch! The low b string is one of the best sounding b's that I've ever encountered. There is zero fret buzz and I've only had to set up the neck once since I got it over Christmas break. (In New England you usually have to set your neck up on a monthly basis because of the humidity.) This bass gets played for at least two hours EVERY SINGLE DAY and hasn't begun to show any signs of wear. My only complaint about this bass is that it doesn't come with strap locks, but I can overlook that.If you're serious about playing bass guitar and you think that you're on your way towards a lifetime relationship with music, this guitar will satisfy your every need.
Comments about Fender Deluxe Active Jazz Bass V:
for the price you really can't beat this bass. with that being said, there are a couple of beefs. first, the saddles on the bridge were HUGE and made it hard to get really low action the way i like unless I used tapered B AND E strings, so i replaced it with a badass V. also, while this bass does have an excellent sound, i couldn't get that classic jazz growl out of it at first no matter how i set my bass or amp EQs and couldn't figure out why until i researched it and found that the pickups are not actually single coil (hence "noiseless"). so beware.
Comments about Fender Deluxe Active Jazz Bass V:
Fender has done it again! This bass is very solidly built, and has great tone. I use it frequently on weekend gigs and it is able to handle anything I throw at it! I play everything from Classic and Modern Country, to Classic Rock, and even Motown and Blues. This bass provides ample flexibility to dial in any sound needed with ease. I definitely recommend as a great addition to any arsenal.
Comments about Fender Deluxe Active Jazz Bass V:
The first thing i noticed about this bass was how nice the neck feels. It's thin and lets your fingers play fast, good for sweeps and speed runs. It also the pickups can handle the low b string quite well, but can lack a little on the top string. the three band eq is very versitial, and can give you anything from deep bass to barking mids. And i was relly suprised how well this bass sounded when i plugged it straight into a p.a. system. very convienient for me seeing as i play with acoustic bands and hate carrying around an amp.
Comments about Fender Deluxe Active Jazz Bass V:
so, i got this bass a year ago, and i'd have to say that it is amazing. wonderful tone, comfortable neck (even with it being my first five string), beautiful finish (vintage white), and i really dig the active pickups. i had to take it in when i first received it, to get a set up, and boy did it sound great afterwards. one of the best basses i've played on, i'd definitely recommend it to any intermediate player.
