American-made, lacquer finished, and now a Badass bridge!

The American-made Precision Bass is a classic, the most widely played and enduringly popular bass worldwide. It was Fender's first bass and in all this time its design has only been refined, not changed. The Highway One P Bass is American made and sports a thin satin lacquer finish that looks great, lets the grain of the alder show through, and ages beautifully. Now the Highway One has been further upgraded with a Badass II bridge. Changing to a heavier bridge is the most common modification made by P Bass owners. The Highway One comes premodified by Fender, along with cool '70s styling and the lowest price of any American-made Fender P Bass.

        Features

        • American made
        • Alder body
        • Maple neck with rosewood fretboard
        • Traditional split single-coil pickup
        • Thin lacquer finish
        • Badass II bridge

It's a great bass and an excellent deal. Go for it.

        Fender Highway One Precision Bass

        By jastacey

        from Houston,Tx

I purchased this bass as a platform to upgrade it, the neck is very comfortable, and the bass is some what lite weight
What I plan to do to this bass is:
        1. Upgrade the Tuners to Hipshot HB7's
        2. Change out the pick-guard. to a brown tortoise ... looks better than the plain white ...IMHO
        3. Upgrade the pick-up to Bill Lawrence's P-46 or Fender's Original 62's ... haven't decided yet
        4. Aquire a hardshell/SKB type case ...gig bags just don't protect an instrument ... IMHO

Some people will say, why don't you just save and get the higher priced bass? well ...spending a $1000.00+ on a bass, is just not in the cards ... I got a good basic bass that I can upgrade at my leisure, and not break the budget!!
This is a good basic," Assenbled in USA" bass
The bass arrived with a very good "out of the box" playability, it was strung with a good set of roundwounds, that are pretty flexible, has the so called hot-rodded/modified bridge

        The assembly/fitting was good

All in all a very good basic bass
The price point of this bass is excellent, for an American assembled bass

        Great sound. Basic features

I own too many basses, including three Cirrus basses, and a Roscoe Beck IV. I won this P-bass in a raffle about three months ago, and it very quickly moved to center stage. This is my first straight P, and I can't get over how easily it plays and the vivid sonic charactistics of it. It has sufficient range to handle everything I play with a quick turn of the single tone knob.
the P-bass has minimal features by definition. It doesn't need more.
No issues. This bass is well made for a production instrument. I haven't touched a thing.

        Fender HWY 1 P Bass

        By mike gehrke

        from los angeles

I've had this bass for a few months now and its been really nice so far. I like the combination of vintage/modern p bass. I have the sunburst, it has a nice flat vintage look and classic sound plus you can see the woodgrain in the neck and body. This is a nice american made instrument but needs a good setup(the action on mine is still pretty high). I've only had to tune the bass a couple times in the months that I've had it. The modern neck is really smooth and comfortable to play. Also, the graphite support rods in the neck are a big plus to me. The pickup is decent but i could see upgrading it in the future. The badass bridge is a good fit for this bass in my opinion. The nitro finish is thin and flat but it does look cool. I have two small chips on top of the body that were probably caused by the plastic piece from my strap. To me its not a big deal but i guess its just personal preference when it comes to the finish. The greasebucket tone circuit works for me. It's basically volume and tone on or tone off, there isnt much in between. Personally, i really like the simplicity of the p bass. If you want more options in tone i would say get a jazz bass. You cant go wrong either way.

        great sound

I dont yet own this bass but plan to soon. Ive played 4 or 5 times in my local store. sounds great, plays great, and is simple. i love the two knob simplicity and the paint looks good. i must say however that each time i go in to play it seems to have picked up a new scratch. i dont think the paint is very thick but for the price i can just look over that part. looks like a goot simple bass ant a good price. The real seller is that is made here in the USA!

A compromise for some, but not for me.

        By LDBC

        from Los Angeles

I have now had my HWY 1 for 2 months now, and it has become my main bass by far. My Ray has taken a backseat to this tone beauty. Here's why - the neck and sheer playability. I cannot express how much I love this neck. My hands cramp up on my ray after 30 min, on this bass, never. The weight for this quality piece of wood is awesome. Light is right! This is a true players bass. I assume that one of the "compromises" that allows you to get the lowest priced made in the USA Fender, is that the neck profile is not the exact same "C" shape that appears on the higher end MIA deluxe models. It's a mix of a P and Jazz. To me, this is a plus! (read: follow this title of this review). I have big hands and it is absurdly comfortable and stiff. The 2 graphite rods in the neck not only keeps it light, but has allowed me to get an incredible low action, lowest of all basses I have ever owned. I put flats on it and I have a beefy, meaty fingerstyle tone that really cuts through. I was never a Fender owner or believer prior to this bass...I owned MIA Tobias and this outperforms it in every way. I'm a believer now. Although the tonal options on my Ray are awesome and can let you be creative, it is a real pleasure to just play somthing that sounds good all of the time - no futzing about with the controls constantly, and allows you to focus on staying in the pocket, a nice change for me.In refering to the title again, Fender purists will tell you that the Badass2 bridge is not the way a P is supposed to sound. That may be true, but I love it. The larger mass adds more sustain and to me, a slightly snappier sound, that suits my style. If you want to mud it up a little more, get a bass with vintage bridge or swap it out, (will leave a unfilled space on the bass though...)I have seen some complaints about the tuners, but mine are just fine, and have not gone out of tune yet. The pickup sounds great, however...here is my big complaint...The Greasebucket tone circuit. It rolls off the highs, without removing the lows. This sounds good in theory, but the change in the sound is not a noticible as I would like. There is a definate difference, but just not as much room to play around. I plan to switch it out soon with the normal P circuit, (will cost only a few bucks) but don't get me wrong, you can still get awesome sounds out of it, and with a little amp tweaking, I got a noticible tone difference, and I could easily use both tones on the opposite ends of the control. I play alot of blues and funk, so I like the beef. If I want to go a little more modern, I crank the control forward, drop the bass a tad on my amp and up the treble slightly and I have a nice rock tone.Considered a downgrade by many, I LOVE the nitro cellulose finish, and prefer it to the gloss, which is more expensive to make. Comes with a gig bag instead of a hardshell case, perhaps another reason for a lower price. Overall, I cannot complain one bit. When I say a real players bass, I mean it. Just so nice and simple. Smooth body, satin comfortable neck, dual graphite truss rods, great bridge, low weight, ultra reliable, MIA, clean fretwork, 70's style headstock is a nice touch, etc...you can play this for DAYS.

        Best in Price Range

        By BigSkyBass

        from Montana

Everything about the bass is brilliant. I love the finish, it rages rather quickly (but that's the point) but it does so gracefully (does not chip) and is very unique. This is the best value of any American Fender bass. I encourage everyone to compare this side to side with an American Special and American Standard. There is hardly a difference and the High Way One is cheaper. Pretty easy choice.

        So worth the money

So I recently purchased a highway one fender p bass, and I was completely blown away with everything about it, believe the hype behind this thing, my review is just for one purpose and one alone, I have a warning for all of you who wear your bass low like I do. The lacquer finish on the flat black model(I'm not sure about the others) is so thin, that from just wearing a belt, I've scratched off some of it leaving the wood exposed. Also, now I don't wear a belt buckle, but my pant button still does the same thing. Everything about this bass is amazing, just buy some kind of a thing you can put on the back to protect it, because it will easily be scratched up and the paint will easily come off.

Best Value In A New Bass

        By Anonymous

        from Undisclosed

The neck is comfortable and fast. The tone is thick and rich with the split coil pup that is dead quiet. It's impossible to get a bad sound with this bass because of it's simplicity. Plug in and play!
