Comments about Fender Modern Player Dimension Bass:

This is something of a heart-breaking review for me to write. My first bass was a Fender, my first guitar was a Fender, and although I own many different guitars and basses today, Fenders will always have a special place in my heart. When I heard of the Dimension Bass, I thought it looked awesome and the articles I read about it seemed like Fender was really going for an awesome, versatile, rock machine. I ordered one straight away, without playing it first. I made a mistake.

Before I begin, a little about myself. I have 12 years experience as a touring and studio guitarist and bassist. I don't consider myself "professional musician" because I still need a day job.

It is very lightweight. It plays well. It looks cool, kind of a warped P-Bass style body. That's about where the positives end.

The triple bucker pickup leaves a lot to be desired. It is very bassy and has very little treble to it. I was very surprised by how little treble there was considering that it's a humbucker in a very similar position to a Musicman Stingray. The five positions are not very different from one another, although the third position was probably the "best" of the five.

I believe it's best use would probably be in some sort of jazz setting, where the low end would be best suited. The sound of the Dimension is reminiscent of an upright bass, which is a fine sound, but it's decidedly not what I was looking for.

Long story short, if you are looking for a versatile, rock-based bass guitar, this is probably not what you are looking for. I would suggest one of the Blacktop Fender basses or the Modern Player Jazz Bass for that. Hope this was helpful!

Comments about Fender Modern Player Dimension Bass:

Overall a great buy for the price I paid (used 399.00). Only beef was the pick-up selector knob was not attached well and spun around without turning the spindle until glued into submission. Tone variations are fun and surprising for the close proximity of the three "bars".

Comments about Fender Modern Player Dimension Bass:

this bass needs to be judged on its own merits. don't compare to the proven p and j basses. first of all the star is the five selection pick up it has a very unique sound that fits in the venues i play classic rock, worship. a massive bridge, beautiful transparent charcoal finish with a new body profile that is small but feels very good and light. the fret-board and nut are finished with a quality touch. the head stock is stained with a vintage amber color and a silver applique fender logo unusually found in the higher end basses. the sound is bright but with no overtones great definition in delivery. it is good to see fender move away from their comfort zone. absolutely there are no issues with sharp fret edges well finished. the easy access to the truss rod is a huge plus all basses should have this standard.
