I personally own a mid-70's vintage model, which is MUCH heavier than this new one. The tone is spot on with the original, though! The neck is small & fast with EXTREMELY low action and no buzz. This thing can emulate an upright very convincingly if you add the string mute kit, which is one reason I have kept it all these years. Of all the short scale basses, this one has high end features like a massive bridge, string-through-the body construction, and a split coil pickup to cancel hum. A solid short scale bass that makes a big boom for the money! Play one & hear what I mean!

I have several high dollar bass's that I use ... I have to make note that for recording and capturing those old school P bass grooves this sweetheart is the berrries ..If you want to lighten your load and still have plenty of BIG bottom this baby will deliver the goods ..Small but Mighty

This BASS comes Setup with Good Quality Round Wound Strings. I Myself prefer Flatwounds. I tried the LaBellas suggested by a previous reviewer. Had them Professionally Installed. Big Mistake! Since this BASS is Thru Body Strung the angle of the Strings at the Bridge is Sharper and the Windings on the LaBellas Seperated Badly. The Low E String core snapped. The LaBellas have no silk wrap at the Bridge end allowing the strings to cut into the body. I switched to D'Addario Chrome Flats Medium Scale. If Strung properly the Silks will land in the perfect place. California Girls Sounds so Sweet on this Bass
If you like The deep Roar of a 5 String. Then this is NOT the Bass for You. But for Classic Rock Blues and Soul You Can't go wrong with this Bass. Although there are times when you will still need the Deeper Sounding 34 inch scale, for most 60's Rock this Bass will fit the Bill to a Tee. This Bass is Fast Smooth and just flatout FUN to Play.

Very nice short scale "P" bass. Most everything to say about this has been said by others, so I'll keep it short. I like everything about it except I think it's a little over priced & there is not a reasonably priced hard case for it. It is a FENDER!, (not that off brand if that matters to ya) Quality is at least as good as any MIM Fender I own, which I've never had a problem with.

I own this bass. It seems that reviews may make you think it is better than it really is. Believe me, it's just average. For Japanese made Fender, the build quality is excellent. It even comes with nice strings. The bass came set up well and the frets were all dressed perfectly. It has nice tuners, a smooth neck and high quality bridge. I have the red colored version. It really nails the classic short scale vibe. Plus, if you need something short and light than this bass is for you.However there's a down side to this bass. The sound and intonation are off all the time. Reasons for bad intonation include the fact that it's a short scale (which I didn't realize right away) and there is no definition in the notes. They don't really sound muddy just fuzzy and not ?defined? with no considerable oomf in the mids or low end. The second very big problem I have is the underpowered pickups. I know others who have owned or even played this bass and they agree that an electric bass is only as powerful as its pickups (soundwise by how much it puts out). And this bass does not put out much sound. I'm not saying you need humbuckers, but this babies pickups are weaker than a standard p bass. That's sad because she's like a 'mini p bass' with all the vintage vibe. I HAVE EVEN TRIED DIFFERENT AMPS and SWITCHING THE PICKUPS. I'm trading her for a classic 50s p bass instead which is basically the same but without the intonation problems and more output.

These new Japanese made Mustang Basses are simply awesome. I used to have two different vintage '70s Music Master short scale basses, so I thought I knew what the Mustang would be like, but I was wrong.Last summer my friend Eddie Watkins, Jr. - who is a bass GOD and has played with the Temptations, Crusaders, and a zillion others (as well as playing on literally hundreds of charted hits like "I Will Survive") - brought a Mustang Bass to a gig we did in San Diego. When he showed up with it again at a gig in Denver in February, I had to try it out. It felt SO much like my Japanese made Marcus Miller J Bass - same neck style, same finish...just smooth as butter.I have always loved short scale basses, and I also currently have a Hofner Club Bass - but have been playing both 34" Jazz and Stingray Basses in my live gigs for about the last 7-8 years. Unfortunately my hands are small, and for most Rock and Pop that's OK. But when I'm playing fast Jazz or when I'm music directing for artists who have songs with complex funk parts, I just don't have the reach, and end up cramping or straining. I purchased this mustang two months ago, and I am so happy with it. The craftsmanship is truly excellent. I added a custom made ebony thumb rest to it. Every FOH mixer I work with just LOVES the sounds of this bass, in all size rooms. I'm stunned by their reactions and comments.The only thing lacking was the right strings. I use La Bella 760FL flatwounds on all my solid body basses, but while the Mustang is short scale, it's strung through the body, so shorts don't fit! I contacted Eric Cocco at La Bella, and he created a *NEW* set specifically for the Mustang. "La Bella 760FL Mustang" strings.Now I have the absolute best Bass playing experience. Fender Mustang Bass with matching La Bella Flatwound string! They are fanstastic!I can't recommend this bass HIGHLY ENOUGH! And I really can't understand some of the negative reviews I've read here at all. What in the world are they looking for? If you like short scale basses RUN OUT and get one of these Mustangs. Truly a gem!

I just recently bought an antique white after wanting one for years . All I know is I love mine . Great Fender solid quality and that pickup which I thought would be replacing but after a setup it's just that punchy . Killer lil bass . If anything to scrutinize it should come with some lighter strings . 95s would be superb . All I can say is if you're wanting a shortscale this would be it .

ive had this bass for a while now, i also have a jazz bass. i have small hands and i thought this bass would be a dream come true. maybe if i was 40 and had tendonidis it would be. for fast punk, this bass is a no no. strings dont have enough tension like a full scale. i found it hard to get a good set up with it, the frets always buzzed with a pick. it also has sort of a generic, vintage tone. not like a p bass like others say, a precision has a more in your face tone. will some one please buy this bass back from me? or trade for a P bass. if you are into country, blues, or anything thats sorta slow, this bass could be your soul mate. if your into punk jus stick with the good ole MM stingray or a Precision

I own 4 short scales basses( Mosrite, Danelectro, Ampeg & this Fender)and I play this bass 85% of the time. I have played (on & off) for 47 years so I am over trying to impress people with playing a 34" scale bass (P-Bass), etc. I have smallish hands (& 3 fingers, LH) and I LOVE this neck. To me, this plays better than any new Fender American bass I've seen. I have Fiesta Red which is a little more orange than other Fender "Fiesta Red" guitars I've seen. I like the "keep it simple" approach for the pickup and controls. If you have a good amp (AMPEG USA) you can tweak most basses... I don't care about how many frets it has, as I play LOW notes (it is a bass). If you heard this bass live, thru a good amp (AMPEG USA) with your eyes closed, it sounds just as good as any other quality bass, regardless of scale. Short scale basses will probably always get a bad rap compared to 34" full scale. Don't worry about impressing people with your gear, play what works for you.
