A do-it-all Jazz Bass that can cover any session.

When you back up as many different kinds of musicians as Reggie Hamilton, you need a bass that can adjust. Reggie's Jazz model is set up to cover the spread. It combines a Noiseless Jazz pickup in the bridge position, and an American Series Precision pickup at the neck. The pickups can be switched to passive or active mode via a mini-toggle on the pickguard. Active mode has a 3-band EQ with boost/cut on each band. In passive mode you get master volume and a pan control between the pickups. Another custom feature is a Hipshot Bass Xtender drop D key on the E string to give you the low D without going to a 5-string.

    Features

    • Alder body
    • Maple neck
    • Rosewood fingerboard
    • 20 frets
    • 1 American Series Precision Bass pickup (neck)
    • 1 Custom Noiseless Jazz Bass pickup (bridge)
    • Mini-toggle active/passive switch
    • Active mode: master volume, pickup pan, 3-band EQ with bass, mid, and treble boost/cut
    • Passive mode: master volume, pickup pan
    • Black/white/black 3-ply pickguard on black version
    • 4-ply tortoise shell on sunburst version
    • American Vintage Jazz bridge

I was lucky enough to attend the NAMM show a couple years ago, and fell in love with this bass there. I was checking out all the Fender basses when this one caught my eye for its Jazz body and P-Bass neck pickup. I own a Fender JP-90, and it was the only bass I'd ever seen with a P+J combo on a jazz-style body and neck, so I had to play it. When I picked it up, I noticed the Hipshot, and that just blew me away.

I bought one within a couple months, and have been 100% satisfied with this bass ever since. I play it mostly in a Classic Soul band, but find myself bringing it to contemporary and even surf gigs because of the versatile tone and the convenience of the drop-D. Besides the great tone and feel, I always get compliments on the classy look of the 3-tone sunburst. I agree, it's the nicest Fender you can get for under $1000. Totally recommended!

pretty nice bass, a little heavy which is a plus for tone.Fender preamp is decent too.Only problem I see in this bass is the neck.Ive read other forums, and that was a main complaint for people owning this bass,I figured I give it a try.Action was a little high out the box,I took off the neck to adjust it and at first the truss rod screw(phillips or regular screwdrive,I prefer the allen wrench type)wouldnt budge. Finally got it to move and had to max it out.It put a little relief in the neck but it still had a bow to it.Fender should take heed and maybe put that road worn,or geddy lee neck on this bass.IMHO those are the best necks fender has going.

Best kept secret of affordable basses

        By Jared Brandon

        from Lubbock, TX

Comments about Fender Reggie Hamilton Jazz Bass:

This bass is amazing. Flat out. It's mexican made, but I could swear the parts in it are american.Pros:P/J pickup combo. Why don't more people play a bass with a PJ combo???? It's truly the best of both worlds. With the parametric EQ adjustments, you can make this bass sound like the funkiest fender jazz bass, OR get well into MusicMan tone territory. Hipshot Tuner. Instantly drop the 4th string to a D by flicking a switch. Very reliable and easy to adjust with your figertips (no wrenches required)Active/Passive pickups. This is a MUST if using in venues with a straight plug-in to a PA system. Active pickups are WAY more aggressive, but this bass sounds amazing in both modes.Satin finish neck. I hate gloss necks... so much... This neck is nice and soft and feels AMAZING straight out of the box. (literally, I ordered mine.)The P bass pickup is positioned in the old position... the "Sweet spot" as it were. The bass is a good weight. Not all that heavy. It looks really great too. Very classy look for any player.Cons:The old style bridge is a bit of an oddity. The saddles are made from cut hardware nuts, so they have the screw threads on them and the string sits in one of the threads at all times. This allows the string to move around if you're REALLY playing hard (which I don't, I just know some of you are crazy.) Even this bridge is not much of a problem.Overall:GREAT bass. This is truly the best kept secret of the affordable basses category. :]Rock on!!! \m/(>.<)\m/

        Great all around bass

        By Bassman1324

        from Lansing, MI

Comments about Fender Reggie Hamilton Jazz Bass:

I've been playing this bass for about a year now and I absolutely love the palette of tones available. The active and passive electronics really allow you to dial up the best of both worlds when it comes to tone- anything from jazz to that geddy lee tone. There are some quality issues with this bass. My main issue being that the frets are simply too high farther up the neck, there is also a slight warp to the neck on the G string side. Other than those issues I can say I am truly pleased with this bass. I think the only thing I will do to make it better is put a badass bridge on it for some added sustain. If you want a huge selection of tones then this is your bass.

Comments about Fender Reggie Hamilton Jazz Bass:

I have owned this bass for a little over a year now and I have nothing but good things to say about it. The p-style and j-style pickups were what sold me on it, but the versatility is what keeps me playing and enjoying it. the Reggie Hamilton bass has every thing you need for almost any gig you could put it thruogh.

        Not your typical MIM Fender

        By RobertUI

        from Herndon, VA

Comments about Fender Reggie Hamilton Jazz Bass:

I have owned more basses than I care to remember. I bought the RHJB because it offered the P bass sound in a familiar Jazz bass package. I went for the value of the MIM model due to the fact that I gig a lot and don't care to take pricey stuff to bars and pool parties. I am STUNNED with the quality and fit and finish of this bass. A tune up was definitely called for, but the quality control on this bass is MUCH better than any other MIM I have owned. It is equally on par with the MIJ/CIJ basses I've owned and close to the quality of the MIA basses and guitars that I've owned. Well done Fender!

        Great bass!

        By sekim

        from TX

Comments about Fender Reggie Hamilton Jazz Bass:

I wanted something for sessions that wouldn't break the bank and is versatile. The RH sig model fits the need nicely. *Very* nice sounds with passive and 3 band active modes. This bass has *the* tones IMO. About the only downside is the MIM neck is kinda iffy, but I got this one playing pretty good after a fret leveling and major truss, bridge and pickup level adjustments. Given the US electronics on the 'decent enough' MIM body and throw in a hipshot drop-D tuner and you get nice bang for the buck - as long as you're willing to do a little more than just a cursory setup to get it playing good. But it's worth the effort IMO since it definitely has *the* tones and plays fairly well with excellent intonation throughout the scale when properly set up.

Good for pretty much any style of music!

Comments about Fender Reggie Hamilton Jazz Bass:

I bought this bass because i really wanted to have the best of both worlds when it came to bass sound. i wanted to have the deeper p-bass sound for more of a rock style sound. but i also wanted the "jazzier" sound of the j-bass for slapping and popping. this bass hit it right on the nose, the 3 band EQ is GREAT. i would much rather have the reggie hamilton than an american p or j bass, hands down. it is well worth the money.

        Best Fender under $1000

        By Darrell Taylor

        from Birmingham,AL.

Comments about Fender Reggie Hamilton Jazz Bass:

This,to me,is the most versitile Fender you can get. With a P and a J and a very good active EQ (useful:not harsh)the tonal range is great. This bass looks very old school but has a lot going for it. I found myself using the Hipshot Dtuner a lot more than I thought I would. It feels like a standard Jazz.It is well made for Mexican; not quite displaying the attention to fretwork and neck as the American models. My only MINOR complaints are the old style trussrod(the allen key style is better)and a limited color choice. Well worth the money; I have had mine a year and love it. All it needs is Schaller security locks and a set of DR"Fat Beams"(Marcus Miller)strings and it's ready.

        Fender Reggie Hamilton Jazz Bass

        By Bassdude-9z8fB

        from Minneapolis, MN

Comments about Fender Reggie Hamilton Jazz Bass:

I bought this bass because I hated switching basses in one of the cover bands I played in. Certain songs required a deep "dub" sound that I couldn't get from my jazz, so I had to switch to a P, and certain songs required more "growl" and midrange, so I had to switch to a jazz. This bass lets me do it all on the fly, and even more, it's got a pretty wide 3-band eq. The ONLY thing I feel is missing from this bass, is tone control in passive mode (i.e. rolling back the tone on your P-bass for Motown covers). To get it, you have to cut mids and highs in active mode, but leave the bass boosted. This pretty much eliminates the need and/or usability of passive mode in my opinion.
