OVERVIEW

A bass designed with yesterday's style and today's technology.

Players fond of the old adage "if it ain't broke¦" haven't played a JB-2. You see, the G&L JB-2 is all about refinement, blending "holy grail" Alnico single-coil tone with modern Leo Fender improvements.

The JB-2's classic Alnico V pickups have tone reminiscent of the best examples from the early ˜60s, thanks to the work of Paul Gagon, G&L VP Engineering. Gagon found his inspiration reviewing original prints stored in Leo Fender's private laboratory at G&L, but that was just the start. About 30 years ago, Gagon was an R&D engineer at another company when he was tasked with finding out what was so special about the early bolt-on basses many players raved about. Gagon tirelessly analyzed many examples of what were considered holy grail basses, spending time out on the shop floor talking to builders still working in the pickup department since the ˜50s, all on a quest to discover where the real mojo was - and wasn't. What he learned from the builders matched his own engineering analysis. You see, back in the day, the actual spec of pickups coming down that old production line varied considerably. That meant coming up with the right specs was more challenging than simply following the prints, and Gagon's persistence paid off as the JB-2 serves up delicious, classic tone.

While the pickups are the origin of the tone, the JB-2 will surprise you with a clarity and sustain unmatched by old basses with their rudimentary bridge design. You see, the JB-2 features an innovative G&L Saddle-Lock bridge to transfer string energy right into the body end-grain for an incredibly resonant instrument. If you're ready to let go of the past but still love that classic Alnico tone, get your hands on a JB-2 and experience a brilliant mash-up of old-school and new-school Leo.

It really is a steal

Comments about G&L Tribute JB2 4-String Electric Bass:

My best piece of advice would be to get one while you still can; they really are a steal. I don't think that G&L can continue to offer the instrument, as it is now constructed, without bankrupting the company.
I watched the handful of videos on the internet, and none of them sound even close to what my bass sounds like in person. I just wish I could sit in the room with you so you could hear for yourself. The pickups are, apparently, very hot wound. She almost sounds like there are active electronics, but these are passive pickups.
Continuing with the electronics: I have read reviewers who thought that where G&L cut corners cost-wise
was with the "guts" of the bass... the wiring/ the potentiometers ( the "pots")/ the capacitors (the "caps"). Maybe I got a good one, but my guitar has excellent components. The pots- all three of them- have very good tolerances (the amount of turning you have to "roll" a knob to hear a difference). I've got much, much higher-end basses that don't really compare. (They only really affect the sound from, say 6 to10 and 0 to 3.)
Anyway, if you've ever believed a reviewer....
The body is made of swamp ash- highly revered as a tone-wood, and though I think it must be made of book-matched pieces, I am having a darned hard time figuring out where one piece ends and the other begins. (One other thing before I continue- there are 6 bolts joining the neck to the body... it looks odd at first.) The grain is very pronounced, by the way, and, at least for me, took some living with; now I admit- she's beautiful, to me.
One last thing about the body before I forget: Although the body looks like it's encased in glass there is no finish at all on the neck or headstock. Mine felt almost like it had just come from the lathe (which is a feeling I love). It was white but has lately gotten darker, and I figure it will only get better. It's also got a glossy sheen these days to replace that pasty white complexion.
Bottom line- buy it.

The best bass for the money

Comments about Tribute JB2 4-String Electric Bass:

This is the best bass I have ever played for the price. When I received it , it was actually in tune. The craftsmanship is outstanding and has a sound that compares to a high end Fender jazz bass. I did, however have to lower the strings to the fretboard a tad with no fret buzz at all. This is the best bass for the money

Comments about G&L Tribute JB2 4-String Electric Bass:

I've been playing bass for many years; have tried Fenders, Gibsons, Ibanez, Laklands, Hofners, Ricks and many others; and the JB-2 Tribute beats them all in terms of playability and tonal variety. (The only bass I've found that tops the JB-2 is the Ernie Ball Music Man Sterling, an active bass which costs 3-4x as much.) Indeed, I recently compared a JB-2 Tribute to two models from a big-name manufacturer which cost nearly three times as much, playing them back-to-back through the same high-end amp, and it wasn't close - - the JB-2 was much better overall.

As other reviewers note, this bass is a fabulous value for the money. IMHO, you simply cannot do better in a moderately-priced instrument. The quality, workmanship and body finish are very good, and the light weight makes this bass a real pleasure to play, especially for extended periods. I can't say enough good things about the neck - - its narrow width (1.5" at the nut ) and smooth unfinished surface make it super-playable and great for small hands. The G&L bridge is excellent and gives the instrument superb sustain. The pickups are strong and will produce a wide spectrum of tones from deep P-bass to poppy and jazzy. The only weakness, as Bass Bret and Woof have noted, is the electronics (to be expected in a budget instrument). The pots in the Tribute version of the JB-2 do not alter the p/u blend or volume in a progressive fashion; they have little to no effect over some parts of the knobs' turning range, then suddenly produce a big change. Likewise, the shielding in the cavity is a bit spotty, permitting a bit too much single-coil hum. However, quality replacement pots are very cheap, as is improving the cavity shielding. With these very inexpensive upgrades, you'll essentially end up with the equivalent of a US-made JB-2, which has the same body, neck, pickups and tuners but costs a lot more. Buy this bass - - you won't regret it!

Comments about G&L Tribute JB2 4-String Electric Bass:

This is an incredible bass! I'm a 50-year pro, mostly in guitar performance, but in the last 3 years have moved over to bass. I have a short scale bass and an MIM Fender Fretless Jazz, both of which I love, however this axe is now my go-to instrument. Right out of the box this bass was fabulous. The action and unfinished neck were superb for a super-smooth playability. With Leo's bridge the sustain will make you very happy. The craftsmanship, even though assembled in Indonesia, is flawless. I got the Sunburst Swamp Ash and Maple Fretboard version and the Swamp Ash with the finish is breathtaking. No setup needed on my end. Some might need an adjustment, but it was perfect for my style. Just had to put on a new set of strings because the factory set were not playable. Do yourself a favor, just try it. You will be blown away at this price point.

Comments about G&L Tribute JB2 4-String Electric Bass:

After playing bass for almost 30 years this is the first G&L I've played. I've owned a lot of Fenders but there aren't many G&Ls in my area. I liked the price point, features, and online sound clips so I thought I'd give the JB-2 Tribute a try. I've had this bass almost a year now and it is excellent. The tone and overall feel of the bass are great. I like the hotter jazz pickups that are in this bass. The electronics cavity is a little weak. The bass arrived with one pickup not working. It was a quick fix but shouldn't happen with a new bass. The wiring and pots seem to be where they saved a little money. The bridge, tuners, and pickups are all nice quality. The body is a little downsized from the typical Fender Jazz body so it took a few weeks for me to get used to that, now I don't even notice it. Very comfortable neck with decent fretwork.

I would recommend this bass to anyone looking for a quality jazz bass for not a lot of money.

The Tribute sounds so good it has me looking to get a US G&L sometime down the line.

Comments about G&L Tribute JB2 4-String Electric Bass:

This showed up at my door at around 5PM. I took it out of the box and brought it to a gig just to see how it sounded thru my GK amp. It sounded so good I played it all night! I usually play an 83 Fender Jazz bass with EMG pickups. This equaled the sound and playing-wise the neck is better! All of the basses I was looking at buying were over 1k and the one that blew them all away was less then half that!

I just got this bass today,I must say,I,m impressed. I bought this as used, level 2,MF is really conservative in their rating. other than some Very small scratches on the back (which I,m almost sure I can buff out) the bass is as close to brand new as it can get! thank,s MF.the fit&finnish is superb, the fretwork is well done,& I especially like the heavy bridge.the set-up is really close to what I would do myself, the only thing I plan to do is install a brass nut.take it from a dude that,s been playin for over 40 yrs, for the money, you can,t get a better deal! thanks MF!
