OVERVIEW

Ibanez delivers tons of sustain and plenty of low end.

It's difficult to imagine increasing the amount of sustain the Ibanez BTB has to offer, but with the added mass and stability afforded by this unique single cutaway reworking, the BTB Terra Firma gives you just that. Capitalizing on the shortened distance from the body to headstock, string vibration is optimized beyond anything Ibanez has ever achieved before.

Upper Horn
This extended Upper Horn creates constant contact with the Maple/Bubinga neck from the 12th to the 24th fret, providing maximum stability and increased sustain.

Contoured Neck Scoop
The back of the neck is sculpted for comfort and easy access to the very highest notes on the C string. The smooth, graceful contour allows the palm of the left hand to move quickly and easily as it transitions up the neck, into the underside of the bass's Ash body.

5pc BTB-6 Maple/Bubinga 35" Scale Thru-Neck
The Maple/Bubinga combination creates one of the strongest Thru-Necks available. The density of the Bubinga, combined with the strength of the Maple, increases stability and sustain through the entire body of the bass. The 35" scale provides a bit more tension for the low B and improves definition in the lower range.

Mono-Rail II bridge
The Mono-Rail bridge delivers the ultimate in string-to-string isolation, allowing each string to vibrate optimally without being affected by the others. The Terra Firma's string spacing is 17mm, offering more freedom on the fretboard and easy access for finger picking and slapping.

Bartolini BH1-6 Pickups
Balancing clarity with warmth is the hallmark of the Bartolini BH1-6 pickup. Coils with lower resonant frequency provide tighter bottom end and a fuller midrange. The dual-coil style configuration maximizes articulation and a long blade pole piece widens the magnetic field, providing balanced string-to-string pickup response.

EBQ-IIIS 3-Band EQ With Mid Frequency Switch
The active 3-band EQ features fully independent bass, treble and mid controls with a wide boost/cut range. The preamp system is equipped with a mid-frequency select switch, enabling you to instantly select 250Hz or 600Hz, the heart of the mid zone, for a more dynamic and ideal tone.

Comments about Ibanez BTB686SC Terra Firma 6-String Electric Bass:

I love the BTB series 6 string basses for their playability. I have found the necks and string spacing on these basses to be wonderful for all styles of play from chords to finger style to slap. That being said I hate the electronics these basses come with. The neutrik locking jacks on both my BTB776 and my BTB686SC shorted out within a month and continued to break until replaced with a regular quarter inch jack. The stock bartolinis sound mediocre and I replaced them with Delano Dual Coils. The preamp is stock and is also mediocre at best. I replaced the preamp in both my BTBs with an Aguilar 3 band EQ. with these adjustments made these basses sound fantastic and are incredibly versatile with respect to their tone. That being said I noticed a few issues with the terra firma within the first 6 months that I have not noticed with my other BTB. While the BTB 776 and higher series come with a clear gloss finish, the Terra firma comes with a satin finish. This doesn't protect the wood as well as the gloss finish and so issues such as belt scarring or travel wear are much more noticeable and do more damage on the terra firma. In addition the top laminate on this bass has begun to come unglued, an issue I have never had with my other BTB. I am going to take it to the luthier and have him repair it and throw a gloss finish on that thing so I don't have any more issues. All told I will have spent $1500-$1800 on this bass to get it where I want it. If you are ok with after market modifications then by all means buy a BTB for that neck and soup it up with some high end electronics like I did. You will not be disappointed. If you want your dream bass right out of the box, I would recommend going with brands such as MTD, Warwick, or a custom built bass for a bit more money. That being said, the sheer playability of these instruments outweighs the aftermarket work I have to put into them in my opinion.

Comments about Ibanez BTB686SC Terra Firma 6-String Electric Bass:

I'm a guitarist but have always loved bass and am a huge fan of John Myung, Stew Hamm and Victor Wooten. I've always had a cheap, second hand passive Ibanez around for playing around on, but wanted to upgrade to a nice active bass that I could record with and never get bored with for both composing and just playing around. This bass is very well built and it's electronics are top notch for what I use it for (home recording). I had concerns about it being built in Indonesia, but cannot find any fit and finish flaws on this bass. Highly recommend if you want something different but also very comfortable and useable.

Comments about Ibanez BTB686SC Terra Firma 6-String Electric Bass:

Fantastic build quality. Really exceptional actually. Everyone comments on the neck profile and I definitely look better with it strapped on! Electronics are excellent. Massive street cred with this instrument. I have only one issue with the bass, and this is a big one for me, and it probably will be for some of you also.
The neck pickup is 15mm closer to the bridge than on my Yamaha TRB6, which sounds utterly massive through our PA,(I gig several nights a week and I know what works). The rearward proximity of the pickups gives the bass a mid-range finger style tone that cannot be dialed out (think Musicman). There is nothing I can do to alter it. The controls offer many variations of the finger style sound but that's about it so far.
Having said that, I still think the bass is awesome. I do. It's just perhaps not as flexible as the Yamaha seems to be.
In other words, I haven't found my sound yet! It took me several months to really understand my Yamaha and this bass will be the same. I'll update when I get there.
I changed the strings to Elixer superlights as too many gigs has left me prone to some minor forearm issues. It is a really easy six to get around on though, easiest ever! I'm looking forward to understanding the bass better. I have no real doubts about this bass; it's a keeper for sure. But it's a different beast to master. Buy one.

Comments about Ibanez BTB686SC Terra Firma 6-String Electric Bass:

The Ibanez Terra Firma has everything I was looking for and more. The B string can rattle the windows, if you want to, and has a clear sound. The C string is absolutely crystal clear. Both add so much more to the arsenal of capabilities over a 4-string. Sustain goes on seemingly forever. Wider neck is still easy to cover and, although the instrument is heavy, it's very comfortable standing or sitting. An intelligently designed instrument all the way around. Great sound, great playability and total flexibility for different playing styles. I'll keep this bass forever.

Excellent Bass, fun to play right out of the box. Great design and craftsmanship. Great sound and low B string. Crazy sustain, B string rang out for 30 seconds. Players with all hand sizes can comfortably play this bass. Chose this bass over the new Carvin PB5.

Comments about Ibanez BTB686SC Terra Firma 6-String Electric Bass:

I can't say enough about this bass. All of the premium features you'd find in a small shop custom bass are found here. My other BTB model has a mahogany body, and the 686 is noticeably brighter and sustains for days. The single cut doesn't hinder access to the upper frets at all. Harmonics can be found anywhere, so I've had to tighten up my technique to avoid unintentional noise that my other basses don't pick up. It's heavy, but at 135 lbs, I'm not bothered by it. Money couldn't have been spent any better.
