This bass means business.

The MTD ZX 5-String Electric Bass Guitar is made for serious players. The ZX features a carved mahogany body with a maple-burl top finished in a translucent gloss black. It comes loaded with custom Bartolini pickups and preamp, hand-installed in the U.S. It has a wide range of tones and will fit perfectly in any genre of music.

The bass guitar's neck has an asymmetrical curve, thicker on the bass side and thinner on the treble side, offering your fretting hand greater comfort. The ZX 5-string bass includes volume, pickup pan controls, as well as treble, mid, and bass EQ knobs. The tone is incredibly full and capable of massive bottom end without loss of clarity or definition. The pickup position, string spacing, and low action make slapping the MTD ZX bass a dream. Cut the treble and add some bass EQ to produce a classic warm blues thump, or center the knobs and crank the ZX bass's volume for crisp, metal tones.

Comments about MTD Kingston ZX 5-String Electric Bass:

This bass arrived with pretty high action, and even so, the E string buzzed at the 7th fret. After having the truss rod and bridge professionally adjusted, the G and D strings buzzed on the first frets, and the E string still buzzed at the 7th.

They took it back with no hassles, but didn't have more in stock to try, so now I'm back at square 1 in my search, and a bit more nervous about buying online. But I loved everything else about it -- beautiful to look at and a really commanding tone and punch.

        Great Bass,

Comments about MTD Kingston ZX 5-String Electric Bass:

Overall, I am very pleased with the bass and could not have asked for more, MTD nice job!
I just received my MTD ZX 5 days ago from Musicians Friend. The bass has great pickups, awesome tuners and the bridge is very high quality. Having 5 eq/volume adjustments allows you to dial the bass in to the perfect sweet spot no matter what type of music you play.
The bass plays great and is beautiful. Action is nice and low and the craftsmanship is certainly noteworthy. I have inspected the bass very closely and can find no flaws with the bass. Great tuners and great pickups. Even the strings don't seem to be that bad compared to other bases I have bought from Fender & Line 6.
I feel like I got a great bass for the money. A work or art and at a decent price. MTD, thanks for making a Kingston line, a perfect match for those of us who don't want to drop a lot into a great bass, but still having something close in performance.

        Ask me a question

Comments about MTD Kingston ZX 5-String Electric Bass:

I ordered this bass after reading a lot of reviews. The first one came with a warped truss rod cover, pitted finish and poor set up. Musicians Friend promptly replaced it with a second one which arrived in much better shape. The second bass had a flawless finish, perfect hardware (although the knobs were installed so close to the body they rubbed on the finish) and the neck/body joint was nice and tight. After a few adjustments to the truss rod and saddles, I liked the playability of this bass a lot better. The really great thing about this bass is it's tone - if you want thumpy, roll off the treble and boost the bass a bit. If you want mid-range for solos that shine through the mix, this bass is great. Some of the reviews I read mentioned that the asymmetrical neck is difficult to play on. I did not find this to be an issue because I like to play with my (neck) thumb on the neck. Also, people commented on the screw on battery cover - also a non-issue for me as I keep a screwdriver in my gig bag. This bass is a great instrument for anyone who plays a lot of different types of music and needs to change tone-sounds quickly. She definately plays well with the fingers or the thumb. I've played her on a few gigs now and after the first one I did not take a back-up instrument. I won't say she is the best bass I have, but she is a contender and I will continue to play her a lot.
