Comments about PRS Grainger Quilt Top 5 String Electric Bass Guitar with Indian Rosewood Fretboard:
The PRS Gary Grainger 5 replaced my stock '65 Jazz Bass. It is a very versatile instrument. Neck is just right. Very resonant, long sustain, no dead spots, no neck-dive, weight acceptable, comfortable with good access from nut to 24th fret while sitting or standing.
In passive mode with both pickups on (both have pull-up-the-knob-for-passive-mode) it captures the J with both volumes full up or the P with the neck pup rolled off somewhat. Gets a Jaco sound with the neck full on in passive with a touch of neck pup. In active mode can scoop or boost the mids and really emphasize the bass and treble with the mid-scoop. Screams through a bass-wah pedal.
See Grainger or Rhonda Smith YouTube demos for slapping excellence available on this bass. Stick a piece of foam under the strings and you get a great tick-tack bass or an awesome dead thump.
I tried Dimenion-5s, P-5s, J-5s, and Warwick-5s (regular and custom shop) and this bass just has so many more sounds available. The hot, 18V preamp (even in passive mode) will overload an amp or DI, so needs a pad or passive DI. I wanted a 5 with a two-octave neck; this just kills it for me.
