I remember the night the Beatles came on stage on the Ed Sullivan Show. That was it for me. I stopped playing drums and switched to bass that year and bought a Klira (Hofner knock-off) violin bass (easy to flip over). It got stolen in 1974. Last year (2004) I finally replaced the Klira with this lefty VB-100 Rogue. It's much better than I thought it would be, better than the Klira and certainly challenges the Hofner! It's louder, more resonant and well made for its class. (I also own top-end custom-made four, five and six stringers and my workhorse upright bass). The 30.5" scale is very easy to play--can't put it down (but sometimes overshoot). My back loves the 5 lbs! It looks very cool with or without the pick guard. I rewired it to remove the three switches so it's much like the Fender Jazz with one volume per pick up; I adjust the tone at the amp. Great finish, looks terrific! Stays in tune (nice large tuners. Banjo tuners are a pain). I was considering upgrading the mini-humbuckers, but they have a surprizingly deep and rich tone, so I'll keep them in. Easy access to the 22nd fret. No real buzzes, it was set up well. The neck is laquered, but that' okay with me, the neck feels great up and down. This would be a good transition bass for guitarists wanting to second on bass--also good for beginners and small hands that can't stretch too far yet. At gigs I always get a chuckle when I tell them Sir Paul let me borrow his bass for the gig! Every lefty should have one! Love the bass! I would replace it in a heartbeat.

love this bass

By BestDeal

from Phoenix

have had this bass for a couple of months now and am very satisfied. Have always wanted a Hofner but this Beatles look-alike is great. I am a song writer and do recordings which is why I purchased this bass. Made my decision on the Rogue based on the reviews that the previous owners wrote. If I had it to do over again I would buy it again. I saw an Epiphone violin bass and it appeared to be the same bass (same "Made in Korea" sticker in the same place on the neck) except for the head stock/turners and volume knobs. In that respect the Rogue follows the Hofner. Have never played a Hofner so can not relate the two. This is a great bass and very happy with it especially for the price. Why haven't other manufacturers made a bass like this?

I may buy another just in case

By Major Boredom

from MEMPHIS, TN

I don't do reviews, but I love this bass. Yes, it takes a bit to get actiion/intonation/pu heights setup to your liking, but so has every other bass I've ever owned. I took the pickguard and strings off and threw them in the trash. Replaced strings w/D'Addario Nickel Medium Scale .100s. I broke it in in a 95+ degree rehearsal room three times before gigging it twice it has yet to go out of tune. Wow. Deep, woody boom and sustain across all frets/strings. Again, I love this bass. Bravo.

Best bass ever!

Great bass. Every time I play a Beatles show, I get quite a reaction when people see this bass. I was shocked to see a left-handed bass so inexpensive. But when you play it, you'd think it was a $3000 guitar. I've played the Hofner equivalent and I didn't like it quite as much. My only negative comment is that the factory strings buzzed quite a bit, but once I replaced them with some flat wounds, it buzzed no more.

Guitar player gone bass curious

By Anonymous

Have looked at Hofner bass. Beautiful but very expensive. This bass is 1/10 the cost of a Hofner. I was very impressed by the sound, finish and overall quality for the money. Changed the strings, and it is a fun light bass to play.

Unbelievable!

By Mikel

from Woburn, MA

Just got mine in the mail. I keep trying to find something wrong with it. I can't! It's beautiful, sounds great(even when slapping), stays in tune, and plays like a dream! I was leary about ordering something over the phone. Furthermore, I was apprehensive about ordering something that was so inexpensive. But, I am so glad I did! It beats any bass I've played before, plus my hands are small so it fits like a glove. I love it!

This bass is amazing I have heard it and can not get over the sound I thought I was listening to a hofner. I am lefty and have a fender jazz bass that cost extra since it was lefty so I was amazed to see the price on the rogue lefty was the same as the righty I can't wait to order this and play it my friend has a lefty les paul guiter so I can't wait to jam and play some beatle tunes.

Rogue VB100

By Anonymous

from Undisclosed

I purchased a left handed Rogue VB100 bass guitar in March, 2001. This "beatle bass" knockoff is very well made and, once tuned, rarely needs adjustment. No problems after two plus years with the bass' body and parts. The humbucker pickups are sound and provide plenty of amplification with my Crate bass amp. I decided to change the strings with D'addario flat wounds and they give a nice mellow sound. I would recommend this bass as a fine alternative to the Hofner, at a much more affordsble price.

Paperback Writer!!

I owned a Hofner McCartney Bass during the late 1960s. I wanted to eventually replace it but the present Hofner cost is prohibitive. My Rogue leftie came in the mail yesterday and works like a charm right out of the box. Light weight and nicely crafted, I would have paid many times the amount for this fine instrument. The only problem is the sub-standard strings. Unlike other reviewers, mine appears at this point to be fine as is. This is a great instrument to add to the palette of sounds in your home studio or as a gigging musician. VERY SATISFIED CUSTOMER!!

Wish they made these years ago!

I read positive reviews, then took the plunge in April 2004. After two years, I can agree with the majority of owners here. Bad points: cheap plasticky pickguard (take it off!), cheap original strings (replace with whatever else you prefer!), so-so electronics (as Hofner, apparently). Good points: beautiful fit and finish (and not just "for its price"), better looking than Hofner and most other violin basses out there, nice chrome-hardware and binding, slim short-scale neck for smaller hands (must be great for guitarists switching over to bass). For its bargain price, you simply cannot justify the too-high cost of a Hofner - just be sure to get the nice hardshell case offered by MF for the VB-100. The neck on mine is amazingly straight - no issues - but as with any instrument, you should adjust string height, intonation, and pickup height for your own taste. If you want the classic look & sound of a Beatle bass without the inflated Hofner price, this is your only real choice worth considering. Kudos to Rogue and Musicians Friend for offering such awesome quality and value. I only wish we lefties had such options in the 1980s! Back then, a lefty bass was considered a "custom" instrument that cost 10% more and took six months to have made and delivered! So you bassists wanting to add a vintage-styled violin bass to your arsenal, enjoy!

Very Fab

By Stephanie

I looked at this guitar on and off for a couple of weeks and then I thought what do I have to lose at that price and went ahead and bought it. Now I am going to give you the good news, its a gem! It looks and plays better then I hoped. I went to flat wound strings and that just made it even better for sound. If you are looking for a violin bass this is the one!

Ask me a question

I have owned one of these for about 4 years now. Let me be very clear I LOVE THIS BASS. Yes, you have to change the strings but I was good to go after doing that. This bass will do every thing the Hofner will do and more. I have used this in the studio with great success. If you have been looking for that classic Beatles bass sound you have finally found it. The best part is you can have it for an incredibly low price. I say buy one you won't be sorry.

The Best

By Anonymous

Once you get this bass, its hard to let go. Great, you can switch from a treble sound to a rich bass in no time. You don,t even touch the amp to mess with sound wether it is volume or solo or rythm.

Rogue LH Violin Bass

Not a bad little bass for the money, although it does have its limitations. Great for those "Beatle chops", although playing metal would sound a bit different! It really would make a nice second bass.

fun to play

By Mike V-uYs33

from Hazlet, NJ

When I hit the stage, I always get a positive reaction with this Hofner-like piece of beauty. I then have to back it up with top-notch Beatle covers (I actually use it for everything, but the biggest reaction is on the Beatle tunes), and holding and playing this is an inspiration. Being a hollow-body, you can practice with it unplugged, but I needed to adjust the action in order to remove the fret buzzing. Fortunately, the buzzing doesn't translate through the electronics, so when I play through an amp, the sounds is pretty smooth. Have to try flat-wounds.Best bang for the buck.

Big surprise

By RW-fl4EJ

I just purchased this bass for adding bass to some of my home studio recordings. I had read the reviews but was still suprised how nice this bass really is. I'd bought my son in law a Rogue accoustic a few weeks back to keep him from banging up my good guitars :) And was impressed with the workmanship on that one as well.Any way the finish and fit on this guitar was better than on any other guitar I've ever purchased. That includes Martin, Taylor, Gibson, Fender, Yamaha ETC.There was not a single defect on it! Amazing. However, I replaced the strings with Nylon wound Rotosounds and during the process of resizing the nuts string slots had the nut crack into. Who cares I wanted to replace it with bone anyway.Plugged in the Bass sounds very much like a double bass which is exactley what I want it to sound like.

I've owned this bass for a little over 2 years and I love it. I've bought two more basses in the meantime, but I've never "bonded" with either of them like I have with this one. I'm a small woman with small hands and this bass is the only one that doesn't make me feel like I'm "dressing up in Daddy's bass". The shorter scale and light weight are perfect for me. I learned to play on this bass and I still love it. And boy does it get you attention...especially lefty!

Bought this bass last year and have had a great time playing it with friends. Like to own a Hofner, but this is just as good for the price. I put flatwounds on it and it's even better.
