OVERVIEW

Classic styling and a huge array of tones.

Schecter's Diamond P-Custom 5-string electric bass boasts all the ingredients of a classic with modern tonal capabilities and a price working musicians can afford.

The Diamond P-Custom 5 starts with an alder body, a cornerstone of any tonally versatile bass guitar. Its bolt-on maple neck has a 21-fret rosewood fretboard, finished with dot inlays.

Schecter SuperRock Bass (bridge) and Schecter P (neck) pickups
Bridge: Two Jazz pickups in one casing. In two-coil mode the midrange is powerful with a nice punch. When the push-pull tone knob is pulled up the single-coil tone is classic with jazzy lows and highs.
Neck: Over-wound coils with ceramic magnets give this pickup configuration a hot output that will dominate any standard P-style pickup.

Comments about Schecter Guitar Research Diamond P-Custom 5 5-String Electric Bass Guitar:

I cannot believe how great this bass is for how little I paid for it. I have been playing for 30+ years, and have played just about every brand out there with the exception of some of the higher-end boutique manufacturers, and I can say this is a great bass! I owned a Stiletto Studio 5 in the past that I played at a professional level and was really happy with it, so I figured this one was a safe bet.

I was in the market for a 35" scale, 5-string P/J. I was considering having Carvin make me one, but for 1/3 the price, I thought this one was worth a shot. I've never played a bass with P and MM pickups, but it's a solid combination. Having the splittable humbucker makes it pretty much a P/J anyway. The neck is really smooth and comfortable to play. The paint job is flawless, and the pickups sound really great when used together. It's got a really punchy, in your face tone. The 35" scale makes the strings tight (which I love) and gives you a really great, focused B string. If you want a five string, you HAVE to try a 35" scale. It makes all the difference. I play it in church for modern worship (Hillsong, Tomlin, Passion, etc), and it sits in the mix great. Really punchy midrange presence.

The cons:
The tone knob feels really flimsy, like it might snap off when I pull it up to split the bridge pickup. And I don't find the tone's bandwidth all that useful. I don't know how to technically describe it, but when I turn it down it's not hitting the same frequencies that I'm used to it adjusting. But it might just be the pickup combination sounding different than what I'm used to. Others have commented that Schecter pots get crackly pretty early on, so I'd expect to replace them all soon anyway. The volume pots run smooth and tight.

The pickups soloed don't sound that great. The P is okay. Doesn't sound like my Lull P (but then you're kind of comparing apples and Lamborghinis there.) The bridge pickup by itself is way too weak to use alone. And if you split it, forget about it. But the combination of the pickups together is a beautiful thing. I wanted a P/J, but will most likely use it more often in its original form, P/MM. It's a very powerful combination, but you can also get some smooth, buttery tone out of it by varying your technique and hand position. Also, the P pickup looks like it was mounted about 1/8" too far to the right (treble side), so all of the strings sit just over the bass side pole piece. Not sure if it ultimately effects the tone in the end, but it would be nice if they put it in the right spot. The bridge pickup seems to line up fine.

The setup was pretty off when I got it. I ordered it straight from the manufacturer and it came in its factory box, so I knew nobody had checked it before it got to me. The neck is smooth with really low action, but the intonation is off. Not a big deal. I expected as much. The P pickup was a lot higher than the bridge pickup, and a lot hotter. So much so that it distorted when I laid into it (it's a hot pickup to begin with). I lowered the pickup quite a bit so it's level with the bridge pickup, and it sounds 1,000 times better, and it makes the bridge pickup more useful in combination with the P pickup.

All in all, I can't say enough great things about this bass for the money. It's the best bang for your buck bass I have EVER bought, and I will have it for a very long time. I may someday change the pickups out for some Nordstrands or something similar, but it's a solid, solid bass in its own right.

Comments about Schecter Guitar Research Diamond P-Custom 5 5-String Electric Bass Guitar:

I have been gigging 5 string basses for the past 20+ years. I have played anything from budget basses to high end $1000+ basses. This bass ranks right up there with anything I've ever enjoyed playing. The low B is very defined and pronounced. Probably one of the clearest I've ever played.

It came set up perfectly for me, nice and low with no fret buzz. The pickups are very hot, and provide endless tones.

      Highly recommended

      Amazing Bass

      By

      from SoCal

Comments about Schecter Guitar Research Diamond P-Custom 5 5-String Electric Bass Guitar:

Very nice construction, good hardware, the neck is very nice with a very comfortable nut width and very flat... easy to play, it sort of has an older P-Bass profile (like my old Fender P Bass Elite II).

The pickups are not the same size as the Fender Am. Deluxe Pickups, but they have the same kind of tone that my Am. Deluxe P 4 string has ... (I like)... lifted the pickguard and there isn't much room," would have to route to get a pre amp in there and a battery box on the back... but so far I don't feel the need to go active with this Bass.

Today I switch strings to my brand and do a set up. The action was VERY low ""out 'o the box"" so some adjustments are needed for my style of play.

The one downer is that there was no string retainer on the D & G strings on the headstock (????) so the G string can just pop out of the nut", every picture I've seen had the retainer so this is quite an oversight... I've sent an e-mail to Schecter and I will call them today...... no matter, I'm keeping the Bass... I'll add a retainer myself.(I've already ordered a Fender 5 string retainer... it holds down the G & D & A strings..... I couldn't find the Two string retainer for the E & B yet)

Just finished the string change and setup.... It sounds much better with my strings on it. The P style pickup has a nice double o sound to it , like in Book or look. The bridge pickup has a good solid short a sound to it like in awesome," together they give the best of both blended together. It has the sound and playability that I was hoping for.

All in all I'd give it a 9.6 and a ""good buy""

Bummer #2. The Bass won't fit in my SKB case but it does fit in my Musicians Friend Bass Bag.... I wonder if strap locks will make it too long for the bag ???

The more I play it the more I like it.

Oh Yeah.... seems that the bridge is about 19mm (I'm guessing compared to the Warmoth Takeuchi T5 bridges @ 17.5 mm) so it's wider at the bridge but about the same at the nut as my two Warmoth builds.

After comparing (I have a Am Deluxe P Bass Pickguard) the P Pickup is closer to the the bridge", that may be why it has a tight throatiness that will work with my style of playing.... I have the string guide on and now the A,D & G strings are held down so they cant pop out of the nut. (no response from Schecter about the lack of a string guide... Hmmmmm maybe guitars are more important than Basses to them) I have the strap-locks on and have tried it with my wireless system (it works just fine). Now I just need to have a Band rehearsal or play a gig with it.

Played it at Band rehearsal last night.... we recorded so I went DI into the board.... what a great sounding Bass. Full and throaty, warm and fat., but it still had a nice tight response," all notes clear and defined. It took no time at all to get used to the 35"" scale", the neck is flat and fast. It's very responsive to right hand finger technique. Now I can't wait to get it on stage.
Only what's needed and nothing more
Very well done, fit and finish is great
      Lottsa Bass for the buck.
