OVERVIEW

A solid 4-string with amazing tone shaping, a loud humbucking pickup and quality construction.

The S.U.B. Ray4 has been sitting near the top of the bass food chain since the '70s because of it's looks, design, components and of course it's signature sound. Active electronics, low noise hum bucking pickups, rock solid hardware and a simple, uncluttered look that is instantly recognizable and respected. They start with a solid hardwood body. Light, airy bodies full of tone are attached to a slim, easy to play full scale maple neck. A narrow 38mm nut width was created for easy playability. Medium jumbo frets allow for effortless fretting. The slim neck and narrow nut feels at home with small or large hands.

Series basses boast great tone shaping features like the onboard, active 2-band preamp powered by a 9 volt battery that's very easy to change. Controls for volume, bass and treble offer maximum flexibility in finding your sound. Plus it offers full cut & boost of bass & treble frequencies. The wide range of tones, guarantee you will find your sound, for any musical situation. The high output humbucking pickup was designed for clarity and true reproduction of the basses natural tone, with minimal coloration. 2 rows of large magnetic pole pieces pump the strings information into the pickup, feeding the 2 band active preamp. Tones can be aggressive, wild or mild. Its up to you to find your sound. 3 screw adjustment allow for more accurate positioning of the pickups angle & height, allowing for more precise adjustments to match the strings angle.

Sterling by Music Man wants your bass to last a lifetime. Superior design and construction are key to delivering a solid instrument that will accompany you on your long musical journey. All S.U.B. basses employ a superior 6 bolt neck joint. The 6 bolt neck joint, designed by Music Man, offers strength, stability and great tone transfer. The neck stays in position and won’t shift under heavy load. The neck heel allows easy access to the higher end of the fingerboard and is unobtrusive, allowing your hands to freely move about the neck with ease. Rest assured, your neck will stay put while your fingers roam about.

The feel of the neck is everything. Your fretting hand is touching the neck 100% of the time you play your bass. Sterling by Music Man developed a super smooth satin finish for the back of the neck. This finish is non glossy, never get’s sticky and always feels fresh. The tinted satin finish looks great and gives the instrument a classic look and feel. And S.U.B. makes neck adjustments easy and simple. S.U.B. Series basses have an easy to adjust neck. No specialized tools are needed. The small thumbwheel located at the end of the fingerboard makes it easy and simple. You can use a small screwdriver or the included chrome bar to easily and quickly adjust the neck to your preference. You can make easy, quick, convenient adjustments on the fly.

Played the bass for a while, sounds great, but mainly writing this review to post pictures of the black walnut finish. For some reason, couldn't find anything online, and when I called Musician's Friend, they couldn't help me. I might add that the fretboard had noticeable scratches beneath the plastic film, and this could have been a factory defect.

Comments about Sterling by Music Man S.U.B. Ray4 Bass Guitar:

I have a S.U.B. with the Dark walnut finish and Rosewood Fret board so I knew that these are great basses for the price. I upgraded the volume Pot but otherwise left the bass stock. It was reasonable well set up right out of the box.
I find the combination of the mint green with maple fret board and white pick guard to be a nice combination so for three hundered USD it was an easy buy!

Comments about Sterling by Music Man S.U.B. Ray4 Bass Guitar:

I''m a Fender man (play a MIM P bass) I've admired MM basses but don't have the $$ so I've wondered about these. Finally got a chance to take an extended test drive on a few of these SUB models. I was expecting these models to be MM as Squier is to Fender.
Fit and finish are good. They are a solid build with a good feel. Heavy but not overly so.Neck has a good feel. Chrome and knobs are very cheap, even for the price. Inferior to Squier's stock hardware. The tuners and bridge seemed adequate for their intended uses. Mint Green looked very cool, but that's a matter of taste.
A lot of reviews say they were great out of the box, I played 5 including a 5 string and all were badly in need of a set up. Not a point against IMHO, At this price point you shouldn't expect good strings or a good factory set up..........and you won't get either. Every single one had a bad volume pot, every one.
Wasn't expecting much from the single bridge pickup. Boy was I pleasantly surprised! This thing sings, deep rich tones with a variety of settings through the two tone knobs. Any issues with other aspects of this guitar were more than outweighed by that great sound. I'm considering pulling the trigger just for recording.
In closing if you're prepared to put in a little money and a little work into this bass you'll have yourself a great instrument suitable for any occasion.

Comments about Sterling by Music Man S.U.B. Ray4 Bass Guitar:

If you dream of owning a MM Stingray, but you just can't justify spending the $1000+ on one, this is the bass for you. I've owned and played a lot of high end basses. Fender American Jazzes, Warwicks, and even a MM Stingray, and this one can actually hold a candle to them all. Obviously you won't get all the bells and whistles, you will need to set it up, and you may find a few problems with it that you wouldn't find with higher-end basses, but these are all easy to live with considering the price tag.

The tone is great. I can tell the difference between it and a real MM ray, but overall it's not going to ruin the bass for you. The only big problem I have found with my Sterling is that the wiring to the volume pot is pretty badly done. I also had to give it a nice set up and neck adjustment to make it really playable.

This is an amazing bass for a beginner-intermediate bassist who loves the look, sound and feel of the classic Stingray.

Bassically, ready to play out of the box.
A few minutes to set the action to what I prefer and I rehearsed with it.

Comments about Sterling by Music Man S.U.B. Ray4 Bass Guitar:

Okay, I was originally having a problem with the pick guard of this bass guitar scratching too easily. I got in touch with the company and found out, TO MY AMAZEMENT, that this pick guard comes with TWO protective plastic coverings. I've never encountered a product like this with TWO protective plastic coverings.

Once I peeled away the second plastic protection for the pick guard my only problem with this bass was solved!!!

Besides needing a basic intonation and action set up adjustment and a bit of a truss rod adjustment it plays awesome!!!

BTW: The action adjusting allen wrench and the truss rod adjustment tool are taped onto the inner box part

Unless something unexpected happens, I now give this bass guitar 5 stars and recommend it to ANYONE who wants a high quality bass at a great price!!
