A solid 4-string with amazing tone shaping, a loud humbucking pickup and quality construction.

The S.U.B. Ray4 has been sitting near the top of the bass food chain since the '70s because of it's looks, design, components and of course it's signature sound. Active electronics, low noise hum bucking pickups, rock solid hardware and a simple, uncluttered look that is instantly recognizable and respected. They start with a solid hardwood body. Light, airy bodies full of tone are attached to a slim, easy to play full scale maple neck. A narrow 38mm nut width was created for easy playability. Medium jumbo frets allow for effortless fretting. The slim neck and narrow nut feels at home with small or large hands.

Series basses boast great tone shaping features like the onboard, active 2-band preamp powered by a 9 volt battery that's very easy to change. Controls for volume, bass and treble offer maximum flexibility in finding your sound. Plus it offers full cut & boost of bass & treble frequencies. The wide range of tones, guarantee you will find your sound, for any musical situation. The high output humbucking pickup was designed for clarity and true reproduction of the basses natural tone, with minimal coloration. 2 rows of large magnetic pole pieces pump the strings information into the pickup, feeding the 2 band active preamp. Tones can be aggressive, wild or mild. Its up to you to find your sound. 3 screw adjustment allow for more accurate positioning of the pickups angle & height, allowing for more precise adjustments to match the strings angle.

Sterling by Music Man wants your bass to last a lifetime. Superior design and construction are key to delivering a solid instrument that will accompany you on your long musical journey. All S.U.B. basses employ a superior 6 bolt neck joint. The 6 bolt neck joint, designed by Music Man, offers strength, stability and great tone transfer. The neck stays in position and won’t shift under heavy load. The neck heel allows easy access to the higher end of the fingerboard and is unobtrusive, allowing your hands to freely move about the neck with ease. Rest assured, your neck will stay put while your fingers roam about.

The feel of the neck is everything. Your fretting hand is touching the neck 100% of the time you play your bass. Sterling by Music Man developed a super smooth satin finish for the back of the neck. This finish is non glossy, never get’s sticky and always feels fresh. The tinted satin finish looks great and gives the instrument a classic look and feel. And S.U.B. makes neck adjustments easy and simple. S.U.B. Series basses have an easy to adjust neck. No specialized tools are needed. The small thumbwheel located at the end of the fingerboard makes it easy and simple. I bought this bass on Friday and played a 3 hour gig with it on Saturday. Don't let the low price fool you this bass is the real deal. The pickup is strong and has a great output. The two band EQ allows you to dial up a wide varitity of sounds. Lows are warm and full and the high end cuts through like a champ. I have smaller hands so the neck plays like a dream for me, plus I have found no fret snag. This is a bonus considering the price point. This bass is marketed towards beginners and intermediate players, but I've been playing for over 25 years and I absoultely love it.
I have a big outdoor gig next weekend and this will be the bass I choose to play.

I purchased this bass after reading the reviews on here and on other sites. After receiving it i was less than impressed. The nut was to big and hanging over on both sides of the fretboard. The fret ends were very sharp.and the pickup wire was shorted to the volume pot.one of the strap button screws was stripped out as well as 2 of the control cavity screws. Maybe i got a bad one

Comments about Sterling by Music Man S.U.B. Ray4 Bass Guitar:

Okay, I was originally having a problem with the pick guard of this bass guitar scratching too easily. I got in touch with the company and found out, TO MY AMAZEMENT, that this pick guard comes with TWO protective plastic coverings. I've never encountered a product like this with TWO protective plastic coverings.

Once I peeled away the second plastic protection for the pick guard my only problem with this bass was solved!!!

Besides needing a basic intonation and action set up adjustment and a bit of a truss rod adjustment it plays awesome!!!

BTW: The action adjusting allen wrench and the truss rod adjustment tool are taped onto the inner box part

Unless something unexpected happens, I now give this bass guitar 5 stars and recommend it to ANYONE who wants a high quality bass at a great price!!

Played the bass for a while, sounds great, but mainly writing this review to post pictures of the black walnut finish. For some reason, couldn't find anything online, and when I called Musician's Friend, they couldn't help me. I might add that the fretboard had noticeable scratches beneath the plastic film, and this could have been a factory defect.

Comments about Sterling by Music Man S.U.B. Ray4 Bass Guitar:

This Bass is one of my favorites i have ever played, but there are minor mishaps. The tone was great when i first got it. My amp dialed perfectly to the basses uses. The sound was great for slapping and using fingers and even a pick. I thought this was one of the best basses around for the price. Some minor problems happened such as: Fret bass on all 4 strings, problems with the high and low knobs trying to make it sound perfect, and most importantly the E string. The whole bass is great on the A,D,G strings but the E string suffers for not getting the high 'snap' that the tone knob should be having. The neck can get messy easily and results in awkward stiff picking on the e- string making it sound awkward, low and sometimes distorted and all around just kills the bass for me.

Easy Handling, lots of fun, great sound, fix the fret buzz and E string problem.

Comments about Sterling by Music Man S.U.B. Ray4 Bass Guitar:

Bass came unplayable. I put on new stings (DR Fat beams, Marcus Miller Signature)as the ones that come with the S.U.B. are 100% garbage. After setting up the bass which involved adjusting the action (action was super high)for the most part, the bass sounded pretty decent. No where near an 1,800 Musicman, but certainly as good or better than any 250-300 Fender or Gibson.

The finish on the bass looks like it was stained with water based paint, so don't expect that expensive gloss you will see on the higher priced american made Stingrays. All in all, great entry level bass at an awesome price. Don't hesitate to grab one for yourself!

Over the weekend I played one of these for ten minutes and in the 11th minute, my mind was made up...I was trading in my old OLP stingray bass for this one. I got the black with maple neck. It has a fantastic tone for clean, low tones, or for slapping, which is what I really have fun with. Great electronics, great tone, and tons of punch. I would say the only drawback is that since it has a smaller (and lighter) body, it doesn't fit snugly into my old OLP stingray case. That's ok, I'll retrofit some foam to make it snug. Besides, it's in my hands more than it's in the case. Highly recommend.

Comments about Sterling by Music Man S.U.B. Ray4 Bass Guitar:

This bass should cost way more than what it does. You get SOOOOO much for so little here. I have been a Fender guy for many years. I own a Jazz Bass that cost be $1200.00. I have always loved the Stingray design and sound and they have been consistently recommended by my musician friends. I decided to buy this as my first jump into the Music Man line and I could not be happier. This bass plays better than my Jazz Bass (and this is coming from a guy who has been a sworn defender of Fender for my entire playing career). The finish on the back of the neck is beyond awesome. I play Fender because I hate painted necks. I hate how my thumb sticks to the neck and have been a Fender player for years as a result. This is actually a smoother neck than any Fender I have played. The humbucker is an absolute BEAST and sounds so good and clear. The attack of the pickup is solid and I could not be happier with the sound I get from this bass.

Buy this whether novice or experienced. You will most definitely not regret it at any point!

I fell in love with the stingray design when I was in middle school. Twenty years later, I now have 2 wonderful rays. This is my second sterling by musicman SUB ray. I now own both the 5 and 4 string models. Both the Walnut and the satin black are beautiful finishes. Very nicely constructed. The setup out of the box is great. The only thing I would recommend is a little 0000 steel wool on the back of the neck to make it super smooth. Overall, I am very pleased.

Comments about Sterling by Music Man S.U.B. Ray4 Bass Guitar:

I really can't say much other than that Music Man really hit it out of the park with this series. This thing plays like, and sounds almost identical to a Ray, and for the price, it's a no brainer.

The setup out of the box left something to be desired, but I almost always take my rigs to my guitar tech the moment I get them anyway. After a professional setup, this thing plays like a dream.

The finish is nice, but they didn't sand the body down as well as they should have. There are TINY little "grit" feeling spots all over the body, but it doesn't bother me.

The sound is fantastic for a bass in this price range (or even in a higher range for that matter).

Does it sound identical to a "real" Ray? It's so dang close that I almost couldn't justify telling someone to by the "real" thing. My guitar tech (who is a professional bass player) said he honestly wouldn't be able to tell the difference in sound if they were on an album or live.

Would I recommend it? Absolutely, but be prepared for what you are buying. You will likely need a pro setup, and you may find some small imperfections here and there...but hey, look at the price on this thing!
