Got a blemished Trans yellow one of these for a break due to a nick in the headstock. The pickups on this thing sound fantastic. I'm a studio musician and live performer, and I'm really glad to have this in my arsenal.

The neck-side pickup by itself sounds just like a P-bass, and with both on you get a nice bright jazz-bass sound (almost like Geddy Lee) if you want it that bright. Turning the tone knob down mellows it out. You can accomplish a whole lot with this bass. Mine's got a little more orange to it than the yellow one pictured, which I really like. It's a great color.

I'm not crazy about the (slightly) wide string spacing, but you can buy a new bridge for pretty cheap and I may well do that one of these days. That and a hipshot D-tuner for the low E string. But I'm using it now and am really happy. If you're new to bass or have fairly large hands you may not care about the string spacing.

For reference, I also own two Guild basses, an ESP, a Peavey, an old Charvel and an acoustic, fretless bass guitar. This bass is as good as any of them.

This is a mixed rating-the bass itself, except for the humming, I would rate a 5. Because it hums, I rate it a 2-and no matter what you do, it hums. Three bass amps, three different cords, same hum-and you can't equalize it out. My guess is that that is just true of some units, because of all the deservedly good reviews. If my bass didn't hum, I'd love it. So here is WARNING: do not change the mediocre strings you get with the bass before you check it out and DO keep all the packing materials-you may have to send it back because it hums and MF may not be as super-helpful as their customer service usually is.

Comments about Tobias Toby Deluxe-IV Electric Bass:

I've been a solid "one brand" guy for 19 years and was a bit skeptical when I bought this one, especially for the low price. Totally unwarranted! I've had it for a month and haven't been able to put it down.

Comments about Tobias Toby Deluxe-IV Electric Bass:

I wasn't expecting much out of this bass due to the price. I had a couple Tobias Growlers and really liked them so I figured it was worth a shot.

The bass looks really nice. It looks sharp. I changed the strings as soon as I got it. It plays really nicely. The neck is a little thicker at the nut than a jazz bass but its easy to adjust to. The string spacing is little wider than most basses which I love. It takes a little getting used to but once you do its really nice to have that space between strings. Some listings say it has an asymetric neck, but its not noticable if it does. Its not like the growlers were.

Its sounds good too. Has a modern sound in my opinion. The extra bass knob is okay. Since its a Tobias, I wanted to put a Bartolini preamp in it. I did and it sounds amazing. The pickups are a good match for the Bart preamp. It cuts through and sounds full and punchy. Lots of lows. I'll be using it more often than I thought.

In summary... nice playing bass, with a different preamp, sounds amazing. Sounds pretty good stock. You won't regret this bass. Especially for the price!

Comments about Tobias Toby Deluxe-IV Electric Bass:

I actually used the talk to a Gearhead feature on the site and asked him "What's a bass under $xxx that doesn't suck so my wife can play it on Rocksmith?".

I've owned more expensive basses in the past but wanted a good bargain to try and get my wife to play. This thing delivers. It is a fantastic value, feels very well made for the price. I was worried that it would sound a little thin but let me assure you that's not the case. I'm very impressed.

The Gearhead nailed it on this one, don't be afraid to shoot them a message. I'm glad I did.

Comments about Tobias Toby Deluxe-IV Electric Bass:

I bought my Toby Deluxe IV, at first disappointed I couldn't afford a more expensive bass. My attitude QUICKLY changed. For the price, this bass is hard to beat. It's not as fancy or refined as more expensive basses but it doesn't try to be. What it tries to be is a high-quality, low cost bass. It sounds, plays, and feels well above it's meager price tag. Great bass for a budget-minded pro (I've been playing 27 years) or an OUTSTANDING beginner bass.

Comments about Tobias Toby Deluxe-IV Electric Bass:

I've played bass very avidly for about 4 years, so I'm no Victor Wooten, but I absolutely LOVE this bass! Through my playing I have played snappy Flea lines and Tower Of Power grooves, as well as some solo work on the side for fun. This bass does it all! My ONLY complaint is that the battery is not in a "pop open" compartment and requires a screwdriver. My point is that for the money, this bass is a SCREAMING deal! Its beautiful, the tone is sharp when you need it, round when you don't, and the full range fret-board is a dream

Just got my deluxe IV, tone goes from dead flat to razor sharp. Frets good and weight is very comfy. Been playing p-bass and rick for years so this bass is no joke. Would recomend to any bass player. Neck is a little wider but will deal with.

The reviews were correct, this bass is great for the price and will not disappoint. Great sound and I bought especially as my funk slap bass. But I love playing it even in finger style. The reviews did say light weight and they were correct. The Walnut color looks amazing and everyone who saw it admired the color and tone of the wood. Truly beautiful looking.

Great bass! Well balanced, light, and very musical. The neck profile takes some getting used to but after that playing is easy. The only con is there is some to a lot of pick up noise with the bridge pick up all the way on and the tone all the way up, yet it is easy to adjust out and still have a good sound. over all it is one of the best basses I have ever played. Going to save up and buy the five string!
