Before I start, I need to point out that a lot of the reviews talk about poor battery life - This is a result of the USER and not, in fact, the guitar itself. The reason the battery does not last is due to the user leaving the jack plugged in.

I picked the axe up about a month ago on sale as an impulse purchase and have not been disappointed. Although I am relatively new to the bass scene, having a little over a year band experience playing bass, I have been playing guitar over 10 years.

At home, I found the stock set up almost perfect, especially for a near entry-lever bass. The action was at perfect height and the heavy D'addario strings were excellent. Whilst I prefer Elixir strings, I have no intention of changing these until absolutely necessary. However, I found the pickups a little too high when slapping and plucking hard on the E and caused an undesirable pop when the string made contact with the pickup elements. This was easily adjusted.

I found the neck very smooth, much like my favourite guitar, an Epiphone Gothic Explorer. I dislike most Fender or Stratocaster-esque shaped bodies, as they feel uncomfortably large. The RBX model is slightly larger than the Warwick models but smaller than the Stratocaster style and fits well within my comfort zone.

The biggest disappointment about this model was the placement of the battery. Giving the battery its own housing is great if you leave your guitar plugged in and find yourself having to swap it every week because you lack the concept of active pickups and the ability to care for your instruments. I found it quite annoying as it limits the ability to add and extra 9V to the series to give that extra punch to the preamp. I've done this to a couple of my EMG mounted guitars the difference is phenomenal. As it stands, I might try to jam it under the plate access to the tone knobs.

Obviously, if you have the cash, go for a Warwick (I have a bit of a thing for them). But if you are looking for a rig under the one thousand mark you seriously can't go past the Yamaha RBX374. I only wish I'd bought the 5-string model instead - perhaps someday in the future.

        Cheers!

Comments about Yamaha RBX374 Electric Bass Guitar:

Bought this as a back up bass and my tuned down bass for gigs. For the price, it is a great looking bass with good sound. Actually feels like a much more expensive bass. Even has some weight to it unlike my other back up bass which is too lite. My goal is to replace pick ups but the ones included are still good.I love the thumb cut out on the pick ups.

Overall, a great looking bass with a nice sound for an amazing price. Even if you buy this as a starter bass, you will keep it around for many years.

I play in a gigging band and use it on stage already.

Comments about Yamaha RBX374 Electric Bass Guitar:

I have been playing for a little over seven years, and this was my first bass guitar. First, it has 24 frets so you can achieve three octaves per string. Second, the pickups have groove in either side for comfortable thumb resting. Third, it has a composite neck so you won't have to worry about anything serious happening.

I loved this bass and finally sold it in late June. It was a hard decision to reach, but I needed the money. I learned how to play on this bass, use a plectrum, slap 'n pop, and tap. This is the perfect entry-level bass guitar on the market. Yamaha may not have the best of the best by way of electronics, but their build quality is unmatched for a bass guitar worth a couple hundred.

Don't hesitate. Buy this bass guitar!

I tried this bass at the store for a friend of mine that was looking for an affordable bass with an active preamp. This was nice for it's price. Ultimately he bought it for his bass playing sister as a birthday gift. The bass is pretty solid and it's a step forward. To the person that said that the bass eats batteries... you have to unplug the audio cable from the bass, not turn off the amp. That's a sure way to deplete your battery. As for fret buzz, a setup will help.

I changed two batteries in two weeks, I thought it was broken, so I called musiciansfriend for an exchange, and two weeks later I got a brand new guitar, same type, however, the problem still there, then I googled the issue, found out lots ppl have the same problem, turns out it will burn out the battery if you plug it into your amp, even you power the amp off. Anyway I will keep it, sorry MusiciansFriend, not your problem, it is the product itself. P.S. MusiciansFriend provided great service.

Decided to pick up the bass after wanting to for years. Tried a few cheaper ones, they had alot of fret buzz and simply felt cheap. This bass looks great and sounds really good too (even if I don't). It came out of the box well set up, just had to adjust a bridge a bit to get a tighter feel.

Can't believe a bass this inexpensive looks, feels and sounds so good. I just wanted a little 4 string for outdoor hazardous duty to save my high dollar basses, but now I am finding myself using it instead of the others. My favorite thing is the little thumb rest molded into each pickup - handy and smart design. You can't possibly beat this for the price.
My favorite thing is the little thumb rest molded into each pickup - handy and smart design. Strings are straight at the headstock, not at an angle which improves tone and tuning duration. Nice tuners, hot pickups and a fast, thin neck.
For a bass in this price range, I don't think you are going to find higher quality. Yamaha has impressed me with all of its product lines. Their sound boards, monitors, guitars, basses - you name it, they are all of highest quality.

Comments about Yamaha RBX374 Electric Bass Guitar:

I bought one of these used at my local music store for when I go to university. I already own an Ibanez GSR200, which I adore, and a Fender Jaguar bass which is great, but this easily beats both. For an average-priced bass, it plays better, in my opinion, than my Jaguar, and has a much wider range of sound, from growling lows to a more vintage, higher pitched sound. While this was a steal used, it is definitely worth the new price and then some. The only issue is, as I have seen mentioned before, the active pickups. They eat batteries for breakfast. That said, if you take the battery out if you aren't going to be using it for a while, it does wonders for their life. I can't judge the battery box as mine already has snapped off, but I would suggest looking into a replacement, as I am.In short, a great bass that sounds fantastic and looks sweet, especially in red.
