Comments about Hal Leonard Fretboard Freedom Book/CD - From the Author of the Best-Seller Guitar Aerobics:
If you are anything like me, at whatever stage you may be in your playing, you are always open to a special guitar book that could help you to the next level, or perhaps to help you refresh your memory after a stale period.
Fretboard Freedom is such a book, and offers a progressive approach which I believe will satisfy the needs of many out there, as it has for me in even the short time I've been using it! But, be prepared to work hard!
Not just a typical licks and tricks book, the layout of the book involves a series of lessons on a day to day, week to week basis, designed to last one year. Broad in scope, these will take you from Country to Coltrane by the later part of the book, AND,most importantly, LEARN and COMPREHEND the entire guitar fretboard, it's layout, notes, and usage! Tough order, but it's doable with this system, and your hard work!
It uses a modification of the CAGED system. From this, the author evolves for each week, the chord forms and positions, extended arpeggios, and scales that will be covered. The licks, in many different styles, follow. They involve each position of the chords that are covered, and become more difficult in more awkward positions! So, if there are positions you have been avoiding, this will help you meet that challange! They are suitable for the early intermediate guitarist, and beyond-these are clearly not meant for beginners! With that important caveat, I will say these examples are enjoyable, useful, progressively challanging, and there are things to learn here, even for we more experienced players! My memory is being jogged on a daily basis, and my fingers are getting a fine workout!
This book is one of the few that joins the short shelf of classics-to-be, and it will be referred to for years to come. I feel that if one puts in the necessary study time, muscle-memory time, and follows this plan through, carefully working it into your playing schedule EVERY DAY, this will be one of the most productive years you ever put in studying guitar!
