Comments about Hal Leonard Music Theory for Guitarists (Book and CD Package):

I bought this book, because I desperately want to learn how to play my own guitar solos. I've looked at pentatonic scales, and know where they are, but can't seem to "break out of the box" and move up and down the neck.

Spoiler alert: This book won't help you do that either.

This is a book that starts out great, laying down solid musical theory, but ends up as complete gibberish to the average person.

I was hoping to have something more, possibly a series of examples along the way of popular songs, and how the guitarist came up with what he played.

Instead, with each successive chapter, my eyes glazed over more and more.

I am more comfortable with music theory after reading this book. But I feel like the guitar is different from the piano. Guitarist don't "read" music like other musicians, they feel it and let it rip. In my opinion, this book needed to be more illustrative, so the reader could get a handle on the theory introduced.

Comments about Hal Leonard Music Theory for Guitarists (Book and CD Package):

Like any music theory book, you have to read this several times and as you practice, what you have read will start making better sense.

This takes time, but is a great building block for learning.
