Volker David Kirchner's works encompass every genre. As a viola player who used to play in orchestras and chamber ensembles, Kirchner's leaning towards the composition of chamber music is evident, besides his numerous compositions for musical theatre and for orchestra. Where his Three Meditations for Violoncello were theatrical in their inspiration, the Pietà for solo violin exploits the full technical range of contemporary violin playing. An experienced string player himself, Kirchner has managed to imbue the form of the Baroque movements with a wealth of nuances in music with a powerful emotional focus.
