I have owned this 4 track recorder for about 3 years. It is very basic, but simple to use. There was absolutely no learning curve, I basically took it out of the box and started using it. When I first purchased it, I used it to completely record entire song productions. I made the transition to digital recording shortly after buying this recorder, but this little machine still comes in handy as a sketch pad to capture song ideas or new riffs. I may not have time to boot up a digital recorder or the laptop computer before the inspiration leaves me.Since this unit does not have any noise reduction, it is important to "saturate" the tape to keep noise to a bare minimum for final mix down. The meter for recording is not terribly accurate. I found that the signal distorted if I let the peaks hit the top red LED (+6 db), so I make sure that the signal only peaks occassionaly at the +3 LED. This unit does not have any effects send/returns so you must either record a "wet" signal or add these effects during mix down by patching directly thru. While this unit is limited, it is still very useful and great recordings can be made by being creative and using your other gear. I would also recommend a second cassette deck with Dolby HX Pro for "bouncing" to. Dolby HX Pro can be played back on decks without noise reduction with good sound resolution. This would permit you to bounce 4 tracks to 2, and free up 2 tracks for additional overdubs.I recommend this deck to novice or experienced audio engineers for the above reasons.

Perfect for a lot of things

I have had this little gem since 1999 when I bought it for my first recorder in 6th grade. While it's not the best for professional recording, it makes an excellent back up copy of digital recordings, live shows or just to get some ideas on tape for a rough version. Since I play solo I can record backup vocals and band parts onto it so it will seem like I have a full band at live shows. This thing is really worth the cost

Excellent Gear

By '65 Strat Guy

I love this recorder. I have it linked with a Behringer MX602A 4 channel board, a Zoom MRT3 drum machine, and a Zoom RFX300 effects unit. Yes, it only cuts one track at a time, but listen. I cut drums, bass, two guitars on 4 tracks with whatever EQ and effects I want, mix it up to a 2 track stereo cassette deck, THEN, take that cassette and put it into the X12, and have my stereo mix, and can add another 2 tracks, and keep going up & down until I have what I want to make the final stereo mix to my master 2 track deck. Then I use Xitel Inport Deluxe hardware/software to digitize the cassette recording to my laptop, then burn it to CD. Perfect! The X12 is sturdily made and has a very solid tape drive.

great for the price

By Anonymous

from Undisclosed

ive had this for maybe 6 months now. i am now recording my bands first demo on it. and right off the bat, i thought this thing was pretty nifty. when attached to my mixer, it makes professional sounding recordings. but, you do need to know how to control the level meter. it took me a while to figure out how to get a good loud sound, and still be under 6db or whatever. in all, for the price, this thing is amazing, and would recommend it to anyone who doesnt have much money, and who wants to put some sounds down.

Great for first time home studio

By Firebird-spKQC

from Morganton, NC

I recently purchased this little recorder. I was not sure what to expect because I have never done any home recording before. It is amazing what you can do with this thing. I recorded myself playing guitar then overdubbed lead vocals, harmony vocals, bass guitar and drums. A complete song with me playing all the instruments and doing all the singing. It is simply amazing and very simple to do. You can record 4 tracks, mix down to a regular cassette recorder into 2 tracks then pop that tape back into the 4 track and record two more tracks on channels 3 & 4. Then mix that down to 2 tracks on the regular cassette recorder and repeat if neccesary. Just be sure to use high quality, high bias, type II cassettes. Great little machine for the money.

City Limits

By City Limits

I invested the money in this little recorder and have used it for about a year now. I play in a country music band, and needed something that was not only cheap, but was easy to use. I have found both with the X-12. Great for demos and recording songs. This is a must have for home recording.

Great little recorder

By Joel K. Oliver

from Johnson City, Tenn.

I have used my old Fostex for almost 4 years before it got broken when I moved to a different house. I never had the first problem with this recorder. Most people don't know that you can record four tracks and then mix them down to a regular cassette deck and then add two more tracks.I would recommend this recorder to anyone as a practice tool and for good quality recordings. I have taped my original music on this recorder and then ran it straight into my computer, using the microphone input and everyone that has heard these recordings has asked me what studio I go to. I always enjoy showing them my little Fostex!

Great for Acoustic

By DCR

from Whitefish, MT

I bought the X-12 for purpose of practicing and teaching guitar and banjo. It is perfect for that use. It's pretty basic, no frills, easy to use and that's what I was looking for. I can record a track on one instrument and accompany it on another and record up to 4 tracks to a cd. I also use it with my music students to teach them how to learn by accompanying themselves. A great value for the dollar.

Great for demos and songwriting!

By ThatLeonGuy

from Davison, MI

I've had the X-12 for about 2 years, and It's a great little machine. It would be nice if it could record more than one track at a time, but hey. Has very good sound quality(just make sure you use decent quality tape in it, otherwise it will warble and distort on playback) I use my Alesis drum machine for rythym and hook the line out to my stereo as "monitors" and it's a pretty good set up. Great for those on a budget who want to get some recording done.

Great product when it works

By Square Dance Caller

from Wilkes-Barre, PA

Used the recorder for 1 hour and it went south. It started to drag. When it first started it sounded great, but it lasted for just one hour. Very easy to use, with good sound. I think this unit must have be refurbished. It is on its way back.
