The Bodhran is the traditional Celtic drum that provides the vital pulse of Celtic music even in modern times. The Grover-Trophy bodhran stays true to the time-honored build. It is played with a double beater that allows one hand to produce complex rhythms, while the other hand adds tonal expression by muting or applying tension to the inside surface of the head.

This is a great drum with a great sound... IF you know what you're doing. I've watched too many people take some form of ethnic percussion and start beating it, wondering why it doesn't sound right. There is a set of techniques for playing the bodhran... It's muted from behind with the left hand, tucked under the left arm, and played with the tipper in the right hand. It takes some time to learn. The bodhran and tipper are pretty much exactly what you'd think. The tipper is average, but it's not what you're really paying for. The drum itself is great. All in all, this is an instrument that requires a bit of time to learn to play. It's wonderful for the price, but don't expect the sounds to come easily.

I gather there are some good specimens of this drum out there. Alas, mine is not one of them. The construction is solid and the drum would do fine if I never had to look at it, but as it is, I find it hard to ignore glue smeared all around the rim and up onto the head, and a large patch that was plainly set on some filthy surface while said glue was still wet: bits of dust, dirt and even hair are permanently glued to the goatskin, which already had still-hairy patches in its own right. From some of the other reviews, I see this bodhran was not a one-off mistake. If you don't mind unsightly (slightly gross) cosmetics, or are lucky enough to get one of the more carefully finished examples, it's a solid and serviceable instrument for a beginner. I'm afraid mine is headed back to the seller.

Thundering Drum

By Nap alms

Comments about Trophy Bodhran:

This thing is great! I just got the 18 inch- and was still surprised at the size of it- It's like a four inch front of a bass drum. Boom, Boom Boom! Thundering resonance- More then I expected- it has to be the biggest sound for the buck. I don't know how long the goatskin head will last- I was loooking at a 12" I guess in a local store for almost twice the price of this, so I'm very pleased. The only negative is that my 18 inch doesn't have the decorative cloth around it. But hold the striker with the larger end to center for the main beats, and the smaller end rebounds off the hand for fast thunder. What's in your wallet? Use some of it for this graet Celtic sound!

Comments about Trophy Bodhran:

The good news is: the Trophy Bodhran skin is REAL goatskin. The bad news is: the reason i know this is that there is still goat hair stuck to my drum in one spot.Anyways, this is a fun drum that i bought on a whim and am loving it. at this price, its worth it just to play with the drum.

Comments about Trophy Bodhran:

This bodhran is a very nice instrument. Being Irish I actually know what one should sound like, and it is good, but i have played better.

Lots of fun

Comments about Trophy Bodhran:

Finding myself in desperate need of some basic metronome work, this 18" frame drum was the best deal around. It turned out to be pretty useful at the occasional campfire or drum circle too, with good volume, easy transport, and the look and feel of natural wood and leather. It's very responsive. I quickly discovered a couple dozen thumps, scuffs, knocks and rolls, each with a distinctive sound. I don't need the tipper's complexities. I get good booms from a homemade padded beater. But it's lots of fun to just lay back otter-style and tap along with others or even the radio.

Poor quality control

By Disappointed-ibX8F

Comments about Trophy Bodhran:

We saw a friend's drum of this model (18 inch Trophy Bodhran, #445005) that was great, just what we wanted, so we ordered one on the spot. But there must be poor quality control because ours arrived with sticky black paint and ugly black paint finger smudges on the drumhead (unlike his). Another example of you get what you pay for.

Wonderful value

By Paddy Rose

from Clear Lake, WI

Comments about Trophy Bodhran:

I was planning to construct my own, but ran into problems finding a raw goatskin. Realizing that I might be re-inventing the wheel, I checked MF and found this 18" drum for less than a mutton epidermis. This drum has a sturdy frame and a very responsive feel. The tipper is no-frills but balanced and functional.I also purchased the Saga bodhran bag, & would highly recommend this.

Great Birthday Present

By Leader of the Band

from Chiloquin, Oregon

Comments about Trophy Bodhran:

All I can say is that my wife was very surprised and grateful for this present. She is a keyboard player but I could tell she wanted to hit something from time to time and in time. When she opened the gift wrapped box she was so excited like it was something she had wanted all her life She is from good British stock and listening to her play it and without any help mute some of the beats from below with her hand I could tell she instinctively knew how to play this great drum.It came in great condition and is very pleasing to behold as well as play. I have had a chance to play it and it has a deep resonate F note. I gave her some other drums as presents also and since this one is not tunable she has tuned the others to be in harmony with this one. I highly recommend this instrument. She has the 18? model and she loves it. I would like one myself but I hope she shares. I consider it a great investment.

Comments about Trophy Bodhran:

Being of Celtic heritage and a lover of folk music and instruments, id be a fool to not get a Bodhran. Well, as the gods will have it, a fine 18" Bodhran made its way into my hands on Christmas Day. It is a fine instrument, very good quality for the price. It has a wide variety of tones and its the perfect beginner bodhran, possibly even for more advanced players as well. My only problem is its a little difficult to hold the 18" so its properly secure but with a tutor book, that shouldnt be a problem. Also, mine had a few dried water drops on the goatskin but they dont seem to affect the tone at all.
