A great pair of overhead condenser mics at a great price.

This is a really well-designed special deal. If there is any single microphone category in which it is likely that you will be buying two of them, it is in the category of overhead condensers. Designed for drum overheads, the CAD CM217 solves your cymbal capture at a fantastic price.

In order to get a clear picture of your drummer's cymbal blends, you need two overhead condensers. The CM217 is equipped with a high-pass filter to avoid rumble and an attenuator to accommodate drummers of varying heavy-handedness. Mic clips included.

The CM217 is additionally good for acoustic guitars, string instruments, cymbals, hi-hats, and more. A great way to record acoustic guitar is to use one CM217 aimed at the lower bout and another aimed toward the neck. You get a lovely mix of attack and body that is adjustable in the mix.

Great mics, great deal.

I give this mic my highest rating. I have 4 of them that go into the field with me as sound reinforcement for choir. That is a hard duty for a microphone. Many choirs are using the hanging mini AT mics, and they sound better than this CAD, but they'd better at 5 times the price per mic.

My SM81s are used just for recording purposes, and I've figured out how to get a good choir recording with a pair of 81s and a large diaphragm condenser as a solo mic.

But I can't lose those 81s because I ain't made o'money. Plus, in most sound reinforcement applications, the awesome quality of the SM81 is lost in the crowd noise and the PA system. What you need in a live choir mic is DECENT sound quality and a high Gain Before Feedback.

I find with these CADs, I get incredible amounts of gain--have to severely dial back the gain on these compared to the handheld SM57 we use as a solo mic. And it's no slouch in the gain department. As for sound quality, having a single SM57 dynamic in the mix is a good way to gauge SQ because everybody knows what the 57 sounds like. And with all EQ settings at zero, these little CADS are far more open sounding and give a much more 'live' feel than a 57 can do. But they still require some tweaking for best performance. The 57 also needs a lot of 'thinning' in the midbass to achieve a bit more balance with these condensers. The sound is very different and requires compensation for timbre matching. That's not a bad thing, since the slight midbass hump of the 57 is actually a much loved characteristic of that mic, very useful in other applications.

I find that if I have time to adjust the EQ parameters for the midrange of these little cheapies, I can get very, very nice sound out of the house system. But it does require some effort to balance the feedback fight with the sound quality mission. That would be true even with expensive mics of course, but since many of those have a flatter response curve to start with, the job is less involved.

I leave the bass unattenuated because with a choir you need as much bass as you can get. I also find that shockmounts are critical in live applications of this mic--it is just too 'live' to handle any bumps agaist the stand gracefully.

Behaves generally as a small-diaphragm condenser should. This is our second Christmas with this set. They got set up for five performances and about 20 rehearsals this year and they're all still working, so fingers crossed.
Bass rolloff and -10db pad, comes with basic clip.
I'm giving this thing 10 quality stars because of how inexpensive it is. So quality for me with regards to this mic is inextricable from the value proposition.
Where else are you going to find mics at 30 bucks each that can do what this mic can do?

This mic is not bad for the price. It's not as open as some other condensor mics due to a sharp roll-off above 10K. I would not use it on critical tracks due to the lack of high frequencies and detail. There are plenty of better mics you can get for tracking your main stuff that are still affordable. I plan to use it as an ambience mic but nothing beyond that.

Comments about CAD CM217 Condenser Mic - Buy Two and Save:

I found out about these from a musician friend who uses them in her mandolin-orchestra gigs. I would've never believed that a tiny, inexpensive mic like this could have any quality to it. But it does! I use it to amplify and record bowed instruments (fiddles, cellos, etc.), plucked-string instruments (guitar, mandolin, bouzouki, saz, etc.), and occasionally folk drums (dumbek, tapan, etc.). All sound great through these mics. And because they're small, I can mount them on a side-mount boom on a mic stand, so I get vocal and instrument mics on one stand without clutter or worrying about the stand tipping over.

I haven't used them too much yet, but they sounded great as dum overheads and as a stereo pair on acoustic guitar. I am a huge fan of less expensive mics, modern manufacturing methods afford us all better products at better prices....IF we do ourresaerch first (like reading reviews!!!lol). These are great little mics!

I use these low profile mics for overheads on drum sets. They don't have that bulky look hanging over your drummer. They sound great and worth the price.

Comments about CAD CM217 Condenser Mic - Buy Two and Save:

I bought these as a pair for two reasons. Price and need. It ended up need was not a good reason. I didn't read the paperwork closely and found that they need phantom power. My 6-mic mixer only has phantom on two inputs. Ended up I was using one with power and one without. Oh, well. I have spares now and can work up other uses for them.

These mics at buy one get one is a fantastic deal.
they are small but very good quality for miking the cymbols on my drums in the studio. I hang the mic from the ceiling and I do not need a stand. I position them for the best sound by location on the ceiling and how far I let them hang. I bought two sets of buy one get one and I could mic all (4) cymbols. I have not tried these on acoustic guitar yet but I think they will work good for that as well. I'm sure there are better mics out there but for this price and my budget they are the best buy for the money. The only reason I gave them a 4 intead of a 5 is becasue they are of home studio quality. However, I would think could even work in a pro studio in the correct application.

I purchased this bogo deal to add to my meager mic collection. When I ordered, the very nice representative informed me that there were no returns on this item unless defective. I assumed (I know) that this was due to the product being discontinued. Within a couple of weeks these mics were included in a drum mic kit SDOTD that constituted a MUCH better value. These mics are also available again in the bogo deal at a slightly higher price.
Again, the representative was very polite & helpful, & I was informed of the return policy regarding these items at the time of my order. Needless to say, I will do better research regarding product availability, price & return exclusions with future purchases.
The only feedback I have regarding the mics is that they pass signal. They were purchased for a return to college as a audio engineer & have only been powered up to ensure operation.

I bought for use on hi-hats. Excellent in this application. I have since used them on acoustic guitars. They are particulaly well suited to 3/4 or parlor size acoustics amd acoustic guitars that are stiffer or brighter as these mics tend to naturally trim that edgy high end which warms up the sound of these guitars making them sound larger and more full.

I have also used this mic on flute and violin. Again with excellent results.

You owe it to yourself to have these versatile mics in your audio arsenal. Well built, excellent performance, incredible value and your customers will like what they hear.
