Comments about TASCAM TM-ST2 Stereo Condenser Mic - Unbalanced:

This is my first stereo mic, so I wasn't sure what to expect. Because of back pain, I temporarily need to limit the amount of gear I carry. I have only used it set for wav format, 16 bit 44 mhz. The sound - intelligibility - is fairly good, not outstanding. Not a lot of sizzle on the high end, and just fair on the low end. So far I have used it to record H.S. Choir concerts for AM mono broadcasts, and it is more than good enough for that. The recorder is also new to me - a Tascam DR070MKII. Some of what I'm hearing might be affected by the recorder, which I have not yet used with any input other than this mic. The built-on mics have a bit better hi-freq response and separation than the TM-ST2, but suffer badly from handling noise. The separation of the TM-ST2 seems odd to me; up close, or at a distance, it's pretty easy to distinguish left and right, but at medium ranges, like 5 to 20 feet, it all sounds like a mono mic. The only controls on this mic are on/off and lo-cut. There's no way to adjust L/R angle, crossover, whatever. Seems sturdy enough - time will tell. I guess I can't recommend for or against it, because how much you'd like it depends on what you want it to do. For spoken word or casual recording, it's great. For high-quality, wide-frequency-range work, I'd say look at the higher-priced mics, or better yet, stay with 2 mics. Even on one stand, 2 mics would sound more open than this one.
