A USB port enables the Q8 to be used with most popular streaming and editing software packages such as iMovie, Final Cut Pro, and the included Zoom HandyShare software.

Video data created in the Q8 is stored as MOV files and can be stored in various HD formats or in standard definition when space or streaming bandwidth is at a premium. Up to four tracks of audio can be recorded simultaneously and either integrated into MOV files, in AAC, or time-stamped WAV format for easy synchronization in post-production. The supplied lithium-ion battery can be recharged with the use of an optional AC adapter or via USB.

The Q8 comes with it's own specially designed detachable X/Y microphone, yet it's compatible with many Zoom microphone capsules. If you already use an H5 or H6, you can swap their capsules with the Q8 too. *

* EXH-6 TRS/XLR Combo Capsule is not compatible with the Q8.

Easy to use and full-featured
The Q8 offers a large full-color LCD touchscreen for ease of use, along with a wealth of advanced features. Dual combo XLR/TRS inputs allow the connection of external micro-phones and line-level sources, and a built-in speaker and stereo Headphone/Line Out jack provide audio monitoring; there's even an HDMI output for video monitoring.

A low-cut filter and foam windscreen allow you to eliminate low-frequency noise and rumble, and there are three Auto Gain settings, as well as a built-in compressor and limiter. Audio can be recorded along with video or the Q8 can be used as a standalone stereo or four-channel audio-only recorder.

Video Features - Go beyond High Definition
The Q8 goes beyond standard HD, offering 3M HD (2304 x 1296 pixels @ 30 fps /24 Mbps) as well as two kinds of HD (24 Mbps and 16 Mbps for increased storage capability) at frame rates of up to 60 fps at 720p for capturing fast action video.

Take your Q8 onstage and mount it to your mic stand, amp, or your drum kit. Shoot video from front row center and use the supplied stereo X/Y microphone to capture the audience experience. Or use the Q8 at the mixing position and record the feed from the board, as well as the sound of the room. Use multiple Q8s for a dramatic mix of different angles-the full-color touchscreen LCD is fully rotatable so you can always view your image regardless of camera positioning.

USB, Battery life, and File Types - Connectivity, power to spare, and selectable file formats
A built-in USB port enables live streaming and allows the Q8 to be used as a webcam or USB microphone. It also allows connection with other equipment and computer software-even an iPad*-for post-production capability.

* Apple Camera Connection Kit required.

The supplied lithium-ion battery that powers the Q8 can be easily recharged in the studio or in the field, using either an optional AC adapter or via USB. Battery life is more than two hours when shooting at 720p/30fps. In audio recording-only mode, battery life is extended further still.

Completely unreliable. The problems started from the first day. Green light indication of full charged stopped functioning right from the first day and the battery sucked. Very often it used to stop recording for no obvious reason making me loose my unique performances. I had to buy a separately sold kit for running the camera from the plug. It became completely useless for me after a few months when the audio inputs stopped functioning as well. The sensor is too small, like the ones you can find on a much cheaper camera and the lens has no optical zoom. I paid 400 euros just for the XLR inputs, for recording my performances but even them lasted for only a few months... I wouldn't buy anything from Zoom again.

Comments about Zoom Q8 Handy Audio and Video Recorder:

This product does everything it states in the advertising except the zoom feature. It is advertised as 4.0, but is actually only 1.5. It will zoom out to .75, so it does have a 4,0 range, but that is very deceiving. I am returning the item because the zoom feature is a crucial feature for me, but if you don't care about the zoom, this does everything else as stated.

Comments about Zoom Q8 Handy Audio and Video Recorder:

This is a great camera with excellent sound but you need to understand its strengths and weaknesses before you can really start getting video that is truely useful. Because of the wide angle lens, you need to get up very close to get a high resolution picture that is not pixelated when you edit or crop later in software like Vegas pro. This sometimes puts the camera so close to the stage that you miss the PA sound that is either above or now behind the camera. This is where the external mic inputs come in handy so you can run 2 additional mics further back if you wish to get proper sound capture. The camera really needs good lighting to work the best. Even though there are numerous scene settings, they are really just digital compensators for the picture so its best to get good light and get the clearest picture the physical lens is able to accomplish on its own. The digital zoom as told above by numerous other reviewers is cr_p at best and in lower light, turns faces into faceless ghosts. Also, at close range, you do get a slight fisheye effect which isnt always desirable. I got this to replace my Zoom Q3 HD with the X/Y mic config and the sound on both is awesome. However, I'm not sure if the video is actually better on the Q8.. Lastly, they must have changed this in a firmware update because there is no longer a auto-level audio setting that is easy to understand and reliable. There are now 3 compressor settings that if used can present an inaccurate audio recording. The previous Q3 had an auto-level feature that worked fabulously that only bumped down the video (quickly and seemlessly) to an optimum recording level where there were no compression artifacts. Only way to do that on the Q8 is to manually set the level and that requires guess work initially assuming you're in the band that you're recording. Of course u can set the limiter as a stopgap measure but I really liked the Q3 auto-level functionality much better. Btm Line 4*s

Comments about Zoom Q8 Handy Audio and Video Recorder:

This camera is superb because it records 4 tracks of CD quality audio with HD video or separate. External effects pedals and rhythm plug right into camera for stereo sound plus the stereo microphones. For me this camera is a great composition tool because I can play what I feel and then go back and see the video in an editor at slow speed and notate what I did into Guitar Pro. For me there is no better way of music composition than using this video camera that features 4-tracks audio.

Comments about Zoom Q8 Handy Audio and Video Recorder:

I'd love to be more thorough but there is a character limit. Excellent audio and video quality, and is pretty easy to use. However, here are the negatives about it (in my opinion):

            1. Only records in .MOV format. Not great if you're a Windows user. I had to buy a video converter software to make it an .MP4 (files are way too large to use "free" ones online). Otherwise the audio wouldn't play correctly when using the highest audio resolution (CD Quality).

            2. Battery takes a very long time to charge. From dead or near dead to fully charged takes literally 4 to 4.5 hours in a standard wall outlet. No Joke! Also, you can't use the camera while it's connected to a power source unless you buy additional equipment. . You can only use it on battery power That's pretty lame!

            3. Wide angle "peephole" type lens is both good and bad. It's good because it can be very close to the action on stage and still get everything in the frame. It's bad because of the opposite of this: if you have to put it even the slightest distance from the stage, everything looks REALLY far away on playback.

            4. I've had some issues with mine where it randomly stops recording for no apparent reason (seems others have had this issue as well). I've noticed it happens more frequently when the viewfinder is closed (which conserves the battery). Strange.

            5. It's easy to accidentally turn off the onboard microphones because it's a one touch toggle on/off where the viewfinder is, which also where you are most likely to grab the camera and move it, thereby giving you no audio. Be careful!

            6. Only a "three stage" digital zoom. Virtually useless. All it does crop the image and make it more pixelated with each progressive step. It should have at least a 4X optical zoom at this price point. Disappointing.

Overall, I am satisfied with the purchase and the recording quality of the video and audio, but I wish it had some more features and not the random issues I have had.

Comments about Zoom Q8 Handy Audio and Video Recorder:

I purchased this because I was tired of having to rely on a web cam to record my music videos for YouTube. This has not disappointed me. in that respect. The ability to record hi-def video w/ CD-quality digital sound is a big plus. Of course, if one wants to extend the capacity to record onto the SD card, one can always select a lower resolution of video and .mp3 quality sound.
I also like the capability to swap different mic capsules. I swapped out the included XY capsule for the SSH-6 stereo shotgun mic and the difference is amazing.
The control menus are easy to navigate. I recorded my first videos the day after I got this.
It does have a few drawbacks--the capacity for zooming in and out is lacking. For this price, one should at least have the option for 4x zoom.
It would also be helpful if Zoom would make some form of remote control for this.
Finally, the recommended software for viewing videos is problematic. Zoom recommends users use Apple QuikTime for optimal viewing. Apple QuikTime has exploitable security flaws and is not recommended for people running Windows OS since Apple was informed of this over a year ago and has taken no measures to correct the problem.
This presents problems also when attempting to edit videos since not every type of video editing software will work with hi-def video.
While I recommend the camera. I just caution users to look for other media players and be careful in choosing video editing software.
