OVERVIEW

Analog drum and bass synth module.

The Rhythm Wolf is an authentic analog instrument that combines the coveted sounds of early electronic and hip-hop music with genuine Akai Professional workflow. Inspired by the classic analog beat machines and synthesizers of the past, Rhythm Wolf enables today's musicians to harness iconic analog sounds for music production and performance. The drum machine consists of five highly-tweakable drum sounds and includes a kick, snare, open & closed hi-hat, and metallic percussion. Onboard controls allow users to customize the tuning, amplitude
envelopes, and volume of each drum voice separately for precise real-time adjustment. The bass synthesizer features a selectable oscillator (sawtooth or square wave), classic filter design, a filter envelope with variable decay, and is capable of creating powerful bass sounds and squelchy leads.

Outfitted with six genuine MPC pads and a built-in 32-step sequencer, the Rhythm Wolf provides an ultra-responsive interface with a classic drum machine layout. Drum patterns can be fine-tuned using the Swing function, Pattern Select, and Tempo Control knob. A custom distortion signal path, activated by the "Howl" knob, adds grit and character for additional tone shaping. Rhythm Wolf features USB-MIDI, MIDI In/Out, a gate trigger, and integrates seamlessly with modern and vintage equipment. Two audio outputs enable producers and performers to mix percussion sounds and bass independently.

It is an amazing piece of professional analog gear! I would buy it again in a second. Perfect for your modular gear, hardware or studio setup. Software has it's place, but so does hardware!

Comments about Akai Professional RHYTHM WOLF Analog Drum and Bass Module:

Does the job well. Better than Volka beats because it has mixer type controls and the right size for live performances. Volka beats felt too much like a toy. Doesn't give you an enormous variety of sounds but the ones it has are really nice and customization. I like that I can make it sound natural versus the fake sound you get with volka beats. I learning how to integrate bass notes but I look at it as an added feature to discover. It was tricky at first to learn. But once I figured out the essentials of programming and saving them I was satisfied. I have saved a couple beats and will be using them for practicing and jamming. If this works out I'll consider the more expensive machines that start at five times the price. But for now this job does the job. I'm able to use the natural recording or programming mode and it's really cool. I like this unit but I do want to mention that I didn't really like the complimentary Timber synthesizer and contemplating whether to keep the microbrute or not. I had seen videos on those too that were great just that I wasn't able to reproduce the same quality. But that goes in another review that I'm going to post.

Comments about Akai Professional RHYTHM WOLF Analog Drum and Bass Module:

I've had mine for a week and I love it.

Before buying, you should definitely know what it is and what it isn't. It's not an 808, and it's not a 303. It doesn't have a clap sound (which is fine with me--I've always thought claps were cheesy) and it doesn't have a ride or crash cymbal, although the open hi-hat can get a fairly sustained sound. By adjusting the pitch and envelope on the drums and combining them, however, you can actually get a LOT of different sounds. Frankly, I think it sounds MUCH better than the Volca beats.

I think the bass synth is great. I read a lot of complaints that if you turn the resonance all the way up, the bass gets very quiet. True. So don't turn the resonance all the way up, and it sounds fine (or turn it way up for that "pew-pew" laser sound which can sound cool sometimes). What I love is that you can adjust the velocity of each note in the sequence, and you can also use the "tie" function for smoothly connect or slur different notes together. This way, you can get a LOT of articulation and textural variety.

The biggest (and in my opinion ONLY) flaw is that THE BASS DOES GO OUT OF TUNE. But you CAN download a tuning utility from Akai and it DOES work. But you'll have to re-tune it often. I think if Akai were to fix this in a "Rhythm Wolf 2" or something, you'd have a truly classic machine.

BUT...!! I don't think it's meant to be used as a stand-alone piece of gear. I have been using the MIDI-out to control an Electro-Harmonix 8-Step CV Sequencer and the gate output to control the arpeggiator on a Juno 60. With just these 3 pieces of gear, the Wolf, the 8-Step, and the Juno, I have stayed up late into the night making hundreds of amazing sounds and grooves. I haven't even tried running it through any pedals, which if you consider the fact that the bass and drums can each have a separate line out, you should realize the possibilities are endless.

Really, the people who hate on this machine simply have no imagination.

Comments about Akai Professional RHYTHM WOLF Analog Drum and Bass Module:

Decent sound. Good build quality, so can be banged around when you're gigging. Best if run through an effect pedal. I run mine through a Behringer Bass Synth, to thicken the bass, and add a bit to the drums.
