Just wanted to let you other drummers know. I have a Gretsch 12" Catalina Ash rack tom, and also Gretsch Catalina Maple Bass, Floor and 10" rack tom.By comparison, the ash drum has -- of course -- a slightly different timbre to it than the maple drums. To me, the ash drum sounds like it has a more resonant fundamental tone to it. With that it also seems more sensitive to fine tunings than the maple drums.Personally I like the ash "tone" a lot, although the maple drums sound great too. The maple, I found, works out better with the "fat" tunings (where the resonant head is tuned low). I get weird overtones out of the ash tom, at certain points in the tuning range, one of those being the "fat" zone, so I have it tuned up from there.Bottom line, if you want a nice, but cocky, open sound out of your toms, go with Gretsch Catalina Ash, but if you want more tuning range, Gretsch Catalina Maple might work out better. That's my experience with these. Either way, Gretsch RAWKS!
I got this kit for birthday last April and have loved it ever since. It's easy to tune, stays tuned, and can take a beating - and it does. I play this kit on a regular basis (3-5 times a week for 2+ hours at a time). Highly recommend it to all you drummers out there looking for the best kit in this price range.
I have played many drums. Pearl, Tama, Yamaha, and I started out on a CB set. After eight years, I was ready to upgrade. I LOVE This SET!! The shells are ash, so it's really warm sounding. I like a lot of toms, so, I love the full rack of toms instead of just two, you get THREE!! This is an awesome kit for the serious drummer!!
This set stood out to me with the free 8 inch tom...which with only four lugs sounds pretty amazing...the toms together blend perfectly with each other...and even the factory heads make this set sound studio quality right out of the box...if ur looking for a good set that won't dissapoint...THIS IS IT.....
This is probably the most affordable, high-quality drumset you can buy. I recently bought this drumset, and I could not be any happier with it. It didn't come with all the hardware that I would have liked, but I can't complain.
Great Set I Love It, Sounds Amazing, Exactly What I Wanted, Love The Free 8" Tom, I Use It As A 6 Piece The Only Thing I Didn't Like Was The Snare But I used My Pork Pie Little Squealer, And I Works Great With It, Highly Recommend This Shell Pack.
I play in a heavy metal band and this drumset has done everything i needed it to do. And when our band went and recorded in Nashville it sounded so heavy on the cd. The only thing is, is that next time i will go with maple cause there even heavier. But for a drumset made of ash it really pleased me.
I have played Pearls drums live and in the studio for 25 years. Last week I purchased the Gretsch Catalina Ash kit in Cobalt blue. I was very impressed with the quality and sound of this drumset. I used the kit last night for the first time live at a 1500 seater and these drums sounded amazing. Dont worry about this kit not having a 16" floor tom. You dont really need it.No matter what your age or experience level, this kit is a great purchase.
These drums kick rump! I was looking for a 6-piece and when i found this, I thought, "well, it's the cheapest good looking six piece out there." so i bought it. And let me tell you, this drumset rules. I'm never changing drums ever. BUY THIS DRUM SET OR GLOBAL WARMING WILL PREVAIL!!!
I've been playing drums for ten years starting when I was 5 years old which makes me 15. Suspension toms on this are really good. The finish is nice. The only problem is the snare drum. It's not bad quality just the sound. It's ok but like you can still fix it. The heads they come with are Evans which is just lovely. So pretty much if you dont want to spend $4,000 dollars on a really good drumset go for this one. It's really good. The bass drum sounds really good too.
This has been my touring kit for 2 years now, after years of touring with a four piece Rockstar, and I have to say this kit is worth the extra 5 minutes of set up time. I've put this thing through the ringer, and the shells still look great. Best bass drum tone you can get without dropping thousands on customized kits. Throw some thick coated heads on these toms, and you'll spend less time tuning and more time rocking out! Buy these now!!
I have been playing for 7 years now and I needed a new set I was looking at a dw and these and buying these was the best I ever did I play in a band and these work perfectly the toms are perfect. I suggest using evans genera g1 coated drum heads with these drums and the bass drum is awesome you can buy an evans e.m.a.d. bass drum head it has a foam ging on it so you dont have to deal with puting a pillow in the drum and killing the natural sound. I really suggest buying this kit you wont regret it!
Drummer of 12+ years, I have owned this kit for a couple of months, replaced all the stock heads immediately with Evan's EC2s and An Aquarian Superkick 1 on the bass with excellent results. I did not yet use the ash snare, I use a cheap steel 3''x14'' piccolo snare with an Evans power center reverse dot, which really cuts through any mix as well as blends nicely with the ash. The tones out of the kit as a whole are very clean with short decay out of the toms. I have had expirience with some of the older and vintage Gretsch sets and although I like the older kits more, this kit accents well with any style of music. I have not had any problems with the GTS tom mounts rattling like others have stated. And if you do have this problem there is an easy solution, go to any hardware store and buy a roll of thin weather stripping, that stuff will help tons with any kind of sound manipulation, whether with rattling or overtones on the toms plus its cheaper than any solution you'll find at any music store. I'm just not a big fan of the floor tom, I'de rather have them mounted than legged. This kit is a beauty in deep red, looks like cherry red in my opinion. GROOOOVE ON!
I got this in the deep red finish. First off, just the looks of these drums is amazing. The grain is really cool, kind of like oak. The toms are really loud, crisp, and sound deeper than they actually are. They also resonate nicely. The bass drum is also very loud and deep. I don't like the snare as much. It's really buzzy and I can't get it to sound tight, no matter how much I adjust the heads/snares. Speaking of heads, the stock heads are pretty bad. I suggest getting ones. It will make a world of difference. (I use Evans EC2 on toms/snare and EQ3 on bass.) because there are three mounted toms, there's a lot of set up options. For example, you can take the 12" tom and use it as a floor tom. all in all, this kit is a sweet deal and sounds great.
I've been playing drums for 26 years. I'm no superstar, but I do know a thing or two about drums and drumming. This is simply a great kit. I hated the stock heads and installed Evans EC2 and Resonants on the toms, EQ3 on the bass drum, and Genera Dry on the snare with perfect results. I'm still not loving the snare, but I doubt anything will ever surpass my old Dynasonic. Snare and bass drum only come with 8 lugs instead of 10, probably to save a little dough - drums tune up well regardless. Kaman Corp - PLEASE make 16" and 18" floor toms available for this series!! I'm begging you!!
This kit meets all my needs. I play a wide variety of music. As in, Pink Floyd one day, Slipknot the next. and this kit has never failed me. I love the warm sound of the toms. And for the price, who could go wrong? throw some Pearl eliminators on this and Booya, you'll be own in in no time.=]
This is a very solid set. Good mounts, nice stock heads, and BEAUTIFUL sounding drums. I have been using it for about a year with no major problems to speak of. The only problem i have is that the mount that comes with the extra tom doesn't work well with my cymbal stand, but it isn't that bad. The only major drawback about this set is that there are no add-ons available for it at this time.
these drums for this price is ridiculous.buy em. they sounds great...the stock heads wont last but the drums themselves are amazing. the bass drum is easily the best drum out of the pack but the fusion size drums have a great sound and can take a beating
man just got them set up and the sound is awesome. I've been playing for 20 years and these are as good or better than sets a lot higher in price .the only set back is the heads, but an easy fix will get them next week these should hold up till then.
I did tons or reseached and played on many sets... Gretsch maked a killer set when they made the birch fusion set. Love it!
