Comments about Gretsch Drums Energy 5-Piece Drum Set with Hardware and Sabian SBR Cymbals:
This drumset is great! the bass drum is just amazing, you need to complete take off the heads for the toms to tune them just right but they sound really good, wouldnt hurt to get some new heads though. the cymbals are okay..the damage real easy ive only played em for a total of about an hour and they already have a bunch of marks on them. but the ride sounds incredible for the price, the crash is okay and i just use the hihats on another stand off to the side for a higher "chick" sound when i need it, or for closed hihats using double bass. the hardware is AMAZING, its so solid and sturdy. Overall this is an amazing deal, just upgrade your batter heads and the cymbals when they ware down!
Comments about Gretsch Drums Energy 5-Piece Drum Set with Hardware and Sabian SBR Cymbals:
I've had these for about two months and they sound incredible. After putting EMADs on the kick drum, it has a serious punch. The snare has a solid sound with both loose and tight tunings, however the throwoff switch feels flimsy. I tend to keep the head tight and kill the ring with a Rem-O dampener. The toms all took quite a bit of tweaking to get them to sound how I wanted, but now that I've broken in the heads, they sound great. The floor tom has a nice low hit to it.
The hardware feels solid and if I didn't have anything better to use, the kick pedal isn't a terrible option. If you have the extra money, I would reccomend getting a Tama Speed Cobra, which is ridiculously cheap for its quality.
There is one HUGE problem that I have with the set though: the cymbals. These Sabian SBRs sound like utter garbage. They hit like cheap Meinls and they tone is atrocious. My son has a small First Act kit that I got him last Christmas and the crash on that has a better sound. Seriously, it doesn't matter what you get to replace them, just make sure you do. I went and took the cheap option and purchased the Wuhan Traditional Cymbal set and added their crash/ride, and their splash. Personally I think they sound wonderful with the drums.
Aside from the kick, which has an EMAD resonant head, I left all the other resonant heads stock. On the snare I put a coated Remo Emporer with the reverse dot, and the toms I put Aquarian Performance II Powerdots. I really love the Aquarians for my toms, but I will say that the powerdots take some time breaking in, and don't sound great out of the box. Once they're worn in though, they sound incredible.
Overall, I would say that this kit is a steal for its features, quality and price, just don't expect miracles from the cymbals.
