I wrote a review not too long ago that these were OK but not great. Then I found myself buying a second set of these. The smaller toms are not as good as a USA Maple but for the price, this kit is great. The larger drums stand up to most anything. I think a 14" floor tom would have been better so plan on buying one if you decide to get this.

I would buy these again ia a minute!
I considered the Gretch Renown and the Catalina Maple kit for several weeks until I finally decided on the Renown 57. I have no regrets. The drums and hardware are beautiful! I got the red and white combo and couldn't be happier with my choice. They are truly unique and sound fantastic. The chrome hardware and drum finish are outstanding for the price. The toms sound just as I hoped they would right out of the box. The kick and Evans batter gives me that great Gretch sound I was hoping for. I almost purchased a set of Remo Weatherkings to switch out after reading another reviewer's comments but the Evans are well up to my standards. I play mostly rock and some jazz and alternative music. The drums play each type just fine. I also purchased a Gibralter 5600 series hardware kit and an A Custom Zildjian cymbal pack. The hardware is better than expected and the cymbals are worth every penny. I am very pleased. Thanks MF!

If you're looking for something that brings modern sound together with vintage looks, then this is he kit. For the price (inclusive of matching throne) it can't be beat.
I picked up this kit a couple of weeks ago after a year of eyeing it. The look is simply amazing and while one should never judge a book by it's cover, the Renown 57 exceeds expectation in every way.
So we've established that the look is totally unique. The hardware is equally solid and will support even the hardest playing. What you gain in strength, you also gain in weight; these drums are heavy! Way heavier than other maple kits. If you're moving i around a lot, you'll surely notice. On the otherhand, the exercise can only help improve our overall strength and endurance behind the kit.
The set comes with Evans G1s on the batter side of the toms and an EMAD on the kick. I personally prefer a 2 ply head on the floor and swapped it out immediately. The only resonant heads are really the onlybevident shortcut on the kit. They are very cheap and had an impact on the initial sound. I swapped all of the resonant tom heads with Remo clear Ambassadors which improved the sound instantly. I also swapped the resonant kick head with a Smooth White Ambassador and added a felt strip. Again, instant improvement. The extra $60 in heads was money well spent when it comes to giving this kit the extra pick me up to pull out that last bit of missing sound.
The snare is a stand out champ all by itself. Again, I changed the resonant head with a Remo Ambassador snare side just to be consistent with the rest of the kit. Same results, a great drum that compliments this or any other kit you might use it with.
